I used to live a lot closer to Western but have lived on Hunters Club since the beginning of March 2009. Bojangles has competition from several fast food places, two casual dining restaurants, and a grocery store. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of each:
Fast Food advantages: Non-chicken items on the menus, double drive-thru lanes, free refills on soda for dine-in customers, possibly more consistent brand identity, have access to a wider variety of movie licensing tie-ins and promotions.
Fast food disadvantages: Typically have 1-3 good menu items that carry the crappy ones, limiting the number of menu choices you can realistically make, lack decent customer service for drive-thru and call-in orders, are sometimes not trustworthy on take-out orders because they know you'll probably leave without even checking the bag e.g. they'll leave out a side item, won't include condiments which leads to you or someone in your party going hungry, having too many licensing deals ultimately limits their promotional flexibility.
Casual dining advantages: Sometimes have access to beers and wines, which go hand in hand with menu items poor example: Amedeo's sells Bud Light as well as French fries, get more parking spots, many cooks ease the ticket time burden for tables with multiple guests, many waiters that are able to answer a broader range of questions about the menu, access to multiple vendors to keep menu prices in check, buffet options that a fast food place can't offer and grocery stores can't match in price or value, and experts of many, many entrées as opposed to one or a few.
Casual dining disadvantages: newer restaurants creating price wars think renovated That's Amore vs. Sylvia's, limited access to all of the vendors you won't find McDonald's name brands at the Gourmet Factory and vice versa, can't truly set fish prices because it's based on the market, and tough growth prospects in slower economies this is true for fast food as well, really.
Grocery store advantages: Typically a good ol' boy setting where the store and the customer know each other for years this does happen at all levels, but mostly at the grocery level, local folks are right down the street and can be used in emergencies e.g. no reservation needed, if the grocery shopper buys at double coupons then there are discounts.
Grocery store disadvantages: have to prepare own food, array of commodities, array of promotions, lack of trained staff, etc. etc. etc.
This is what I have noticed in my year and nine months, I am sure there are plenty more that need mentioning. The way I am setting myself apart as a Bojangles customer is this: I go after the chicken filet biscuit combo on Sunday morning before the college kids wake up. The hot biscuits, if I land them, will take care of me while I am hungry but not ready for lunch. The appetite sated off of those allows me to focus free time on smaller chores that get me higher productivity. I season up hot fries, I would like to have 5-10 of these, then get 20-30 to have later. If I lose 1 or 2 fries friend tax, the 20-30 for later keep me afloat until lunch. I don't really waste time on other sides simply because they basically don't go with breakfast or something really small.
I will say this, if you can't get a combo in the first 3-4 hours assuming you are up that early, you could be in a world of trouble. If you can get one, it will really make going back for another later a lot more enjoyable and less stressful. It's simply just very exhausting wasting any time waiting in line for anything other than a Tailgate Special in the early morning. You work just as hard on the two-piece snack and see 1/3 to 1/36 of the caloric intake in my situation.
