new Boris...sounds like a mix between shoegaze and J-pop to me.

Debating even snatching the new Boris until I hear more tracks. And I've tried really hard to get into the new Explosions in the Sky, but am disappointed for the most part after 3 listens. I guess I should just accept that they'll never make another Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place, and that their sound has just been re-done entirely too much since that got released. I suppose Post Rock can only go so far anyways...eh.

So as not to be a complete downer...my top 5 for the year almost 25% of the way through:

Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring For My Halo
Destroyer - Kaputt
Lykke Li - Wounded Rhymes
Tim Hecker - Ravedeath 1972
Smith Westerns - Dye It Blonde

And I'll retract my statement on the last page regarding Rural Alberta Advantage. After a few more listens, their new one is definitely better, and Tornado '87 is on par with In the Summertime in terms of standout songs...

^ yeh, if forced to choose, I'd say the new RAA is better than the first one. However, it's hard for me to separate them-- they feel like such a cohesive, complimentary work. 'Tornado '87' is definitely a good one, but I've gotta go with 'Goodnight' as the standout track. The chorus guts me:

"rushing to the woods where we first felt God
locked into our veins from the moment when we touched
and someday if you get back together in your heart
maybe we might get back together"

Maybe three songs I really like. Couple more may be growers. One in particular ("Two Kinds of Happiness") sounds just like a bad Tom Petty deep cut.

*sigh*

^second track and last track (both of which were played on SNL if i remember correctly) are easily my favorites

the rest of it is passable enough to keep me interested until those tracks

overall, it's better than first impressions but still not up to par with their first two...once you accept the fact that they won't make another Is This It and move on, though, it's not a bad record.

for anybody interested, schoolkids is having a midnight sale next monday night/tuesday morning for the new radiohead album on CD and LP.

if you show up on midnight, any cd or lp comes with a free stanley donwood-designed lithograph that looks really cool.

Really diggin' the studio version of Cults' "You Know What I Mean." That band is definitely headed for big things.

What's the pop song that Machu Picchu clearly rips off?

the riff after the chorus

it's really bothering me

I can hear the song pretty clearly in my head but not the lyrics

I could be wrong but that riff is like exactly the same as the chorus from this song, i think. i feel like it's michael jackson but it's probably not.

maybe i'm on crack

so the jessica lea mayfield record has grown on me, probably because as it warms up i'm more in tune with mood reverb

but i've realized what i really don't like above the production

a good chunk of the lead vocals are over-doubletracked, to try to smooth out the imperfections in her voice

but it's her drawl and the bend on her notes that makes her vocals interesting; smooth that out and she just sounds bored

The Strokes "Angles" is just $3.99 today on Amazon (basically paying for just those 2-3 good songs mentioned above)

Still haven't gotten around to the new Strokes...not too excited to hear it after reading the last couple of pages.

Today I'm really digging Crack My Bones by The Shoes. Refreshing to hear something good that makes me want to dance, since the new Cut Copy was godawful...

Lord I Just Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes by Colin Stetson *probably* just became my favorite song of the year so far.

Jazz record with Efrim Menuck getting production credits...pretty much what you'd expect...

I liked Julian Casablancas solo album a lot more than Angles. I think I liked Albert Hammond Jr's debut more, too.

"Taken For A Fool" is kick ass, though.

^^ the mountain goats are one of my favorite bands, but this album doesn't do it for me. too many different styles, too little cohesion, some songs that are terrible. I like a few of the tracks a lot, but this is probably my least favorite of the 'modern era' (i.e., from Tallahassee on) mountain goats records

here's a not great quality Fleet Foxes rip
http://www.mediafire.com/?1i8v625cd4ujmjm

maybe it's just because I overplayed the first album when it came out, but Pecknold's voice is just grating to me now. oh well.

They're that band with that one song from NBA 2K11, but I checked out a lot of their stuff, and it's pretty good electro-house imo

Going to have to look at Nine Types Of Light objectively and remind myself that it's pretty much impossible for TVOTR to make another Dear Science...

In the meantime...didn't think I'd like this, but I was wrong:

Digging Nine Types Of Light for the most part, but it's inconsistent and uneven.

Pleasantly surprised by Weeknd...REALLY digging Wicked Games...one of my favorite tracks of the year immediately. Hooray for drugs and sex as an escape for depression!

Jury's still out on Nine Types Of Light. Was really disappointed that Will Do was by far my favorite track...also digging New Cannonball Run and No Future Shock. But for the most part...yeah, really inconsistent. Hoping it'll grow on me once I accept that there will never be another Dear Science.

New Fleet Foxes came up today in 320 finally...

Favorites of the year are still Tim Hecker and Destroyer. Nothing else even comes close, really...
