GTFO with that shit. We're not battling them for recruits and historically our recruiting classes sit in the 30s-40s on average so we are at no worse of a start now than an average season. We're an average program with average results. If that bothers you then you're new to this deal. I've been watching this shit for decades now and it's always the same. 7/4/2016 12:48:06 AM |

Yeah, it's fucking pathetic. Average would be awesome, we've been worse than average for at least the last 5 years. We're the largest school in the state, we've got decent to above average facilities, fans that are dying for a reason to cheer, and enough relevant NFL players that we ought to be able to do better than 40-50th in recruiting classes and praying for .500 every year.
There's no reason we shouldn't be able to pull ourselves up to the level of a program like Iowa or Michigan State. In fact, Michigan State is a great analog for what we could be and have failed so miserably to become in both sports. Forget about Sparty and Iowa, what does Utah have that we don't? They've been as good or better than us in both major sports for the better part of a decade.
If you ranked us right now among the 128 FBS would we be in the top 50? Maybe, but probably not. CBS has us ranked 60th going into this year Athlon has us at 59.
It's a failure in leadership that starts with the AD and the head coach. I'm used to it, but it doesn't mean I have to accept it or like it. I don't expect my Alma Mater to turn itself into an amalgam of Kentucky basketball and Alabama football, but it would be nice if every couple of years there was a reason to watch outside of a morbid sense of duty.7/4/2016 1:35:50 AM |

So you don't think the current state of the program is a problem? You're just cool with being the 8th or 9th best team in the ACC on a regular basis?
The first step to addressing any problem is to be honest with what the current state of things is and then start looking for the root cause.
If you think that we're getting a good return on value for what we've put in as a fanbase, as donors, students, alumni, etc. then that's fine, but realize that you're in the minority.
I would be fucking thrilled if we went to a BCS bowl under Dave Doeren, but I don't think it's going to happen. 7/4/2016 5:28:12 AM |

We need to do better but the msu comparison is ridiculous. Have you seen their campus?
Our campus blows. Who in their right mind chooses Raleigh for college after visiting 3 other big time schools? Our only shot at being good is to have the stars align and get our diamind in the rough qb at the same time our d is cresting. We had bad luck with bad defensive downswings during rivers Wilson and glennon era.
Also almost any program would finish 3rd in our division each year. Even most top 25 programs. We are currently parked in 4th but id be happy if we got 3rd every year thats just being realistic 7/4/2016 6:11:26 AM |

Yeah, it's very pretty, but have you ever been to the state of Michigan? It's utter shit like 8 months out of the year.
Michigan State has some history, their football facilities are better than ours, but ultimately the coaching is what makes the difference. After 1970 it was a lot of .500 and below football up until Saban in the 90s, and then right back to that level until Dantonio now.
In college it all boils down to can you recruit and can you get the most out of those recruits. It's all that matters. Doeren hasn't shown that he can do either. If you can land a couple of solid classes and you either have a system or even better you can adapt to the talent you are able to land you can win a lot of football games. 7/4/2016 7:12:35 AM |

Seriously? They hit some bad stretches at times but their football tradition and overall athletic tradition destroys state. That is a terrible comparison and shows you don't know shit about football. 7/4/2016 8:12:45 AM |

Michigan State won a lot in the 1950s and the 1960s.....but their bowl record is 11-15. That resembles an elite program? Lowly NCSU is 15-13-1. MSU did not even win that much under Saban. 7/4/2016 9:27:53 AM |

Their sub .500 bowl record is a poor comparison. We've NEVER been in major bowl. Look at their bow lineup. I see maybe 5 or 6 wins for us, lol. BTW this is a really stupid portion of an overall stupid thread.

I consider ECU as much of a rival as UNC Charlotte or App State.
This "rivalry trophy" hasn't even been in existence that long, and I'm pretty sure ECU just made it up from out of nowhere. http://www.wralsportsfan.com/does-the-victory-barrel-have-to-really-exist-for-fans-to-want-it-/13144922/
We've only played each other 28 times. And once they tore down our goalposts when we were nice enough to let them use our stadium because of some little storm that made theirs unusable. Fuck those stupid assholes. Kurtis must be one of the ECU fans on this board.

ECU fan. Fuck no. It's a half assed school in a shit hole town.
I am, however, a realist about the current state of our football program. Basketball is a little better off and it only takes 1 or 2 players to make a difference. 7/4/2016 4:50:59 PM |

The end-around stopped working largely in part to not having Dayes on the field and Brissett not being the threat to run he was a year before.
For the defenses to not bite on the reverse, they had to have multiple things to worry about. Taking Dayes, and his explosiveness, out of the play really cut out the effectiveness. It's hard to run an option play and get the defense to bite/react too slowly without multiple options. Still think Brissett's regression in the running game hurt our offense this year, towards the end of the year teams stopped respecting it and realized taking Sanders out of the game basically stagnated the offense.
This year as long as we have average to above-average QB play, just having Dayes, Frasier, and Sanders should really help giving us multiple options on offense for the teams to respect.
Sanders did find more success when we were able to work Hines into the backfield, but hopefully we can keep him in the slot more. 7/19/2016 1:45:54 PM |

We have 3 dudes battling for the job, one transfer who knows the offense, one former 4* who has been groomed to take the reigns, and another 3* player who had some decent offers out of HS.
If one of those dudes can't be "average", then our program(and Doeren) is pretty screwed. 7/19/2016 8:51:28 PM |

Finley had 4 picks and 6 sacks in 70 attempts at BSU, and he's supposed to be the "ringer." Every single defense we play is going to put 8 people on the line and dare us to throw the ball and/or blitz the shit out of us. Add on top off that our "mess" of an Oline (Doeren's words) and it would be hard for anybody to produce an average year in those conditions.
I think all of our QBs are interesting recruits that have potential to be average or above average in the near future. I just think it's asking a hell of a lot from them in the next season.
Obviously I'll be pleasantly surprised if any of them is immediately capable of consistently making downfield passes to open up the rest of the offensive, I expect that will start happening toward the end of this season. 7/20/2016 8:31:36 AM |
LudaChris All American 7946 Posts user info edit post |
I really don't see the transfer competing for the starting spot, think it's going to be McClendon or Meyers. Really just depends on how much mobility we want/need from our QB depending on our OL. 7/20/2016 8:40:32 AM |
