Really? In a world where our government has to deal with threats of terrorism, natural disasters, drugs, shitty health care and education systems, not to mention we are currently in the middle of a war on foreign soil, you're ok with them spending god knows how much money and resources to help Microsoft and Nintendo execs pad their pockets? Look, I'm not advocating video game piracy, it is illegal and you have to accept the risks and possible consequences of your actions. However, it seems like an extremely trivial thing for the feds to be "cracking down on". 8/30/2007 11:06:33 AM |

Dude, its not like they're sitting at the border watching trucks of heroin and kiddie porn go by and then stopping the truck with mod chips. DEA is going to be mostly responsible for drugs. ICE is going to be mostly responsible for illegal shipments, which yes can include drugs, but typically is other stuff. If you can show me one iota of evidence that the resources spent on this raid prevented another raid on the kiddie porn market, I'll listen to you, until then...quit bitching.
Also I somehow doubt much money and investigative time went into this. Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo was prolly like "Here is the location of a mod factory and here in evidence"...ICE looked at it, agreed with it, and went in.

Even still, I feel anti-piracy should be the responsibility of the companies who make the damn things, and they shouldn't go crying to Uncle Sam because they put 0 effort into making their consoles hacker proof. MS and Sony use regular firmware updates to make it difficult for hackers to keep up, why doesn't Nintendo do the same? 8/30/2007 11:17:33 AM |

No system is hacker proof...what you just said is the equivalent of Banks not being able to bitch if someone hacks into their atms and steal money.
Nintendo and Microsoft put plenty of effort into making their systems hacker proof...do you really want them to put more into it? I mean look at issues you have when companies go overboard with copyright protection..take Bioshock (PC) for example...it basically installs spyware on your computer to make sure you're using a legitimate copy
^ They do.

Of course no system is hacker proof, but ffs, you have to at least try. I remember when I first ran pirated games on my Gamecube, there was no mod chip. I had to do some crazy shit where I ran a fake Phantasy Star Online server and stream ISO's over it through the Gamecube's broadband adapter. How many people do you think would go through that kind of trouble? For the Wii, they made the hardware so damn similar to the Gamecube, that hackers were able to modify the modchip they'd spent years figuring out for the Gamecube in no time to work for the Wii.
MS changes the firmware on their disc drives so that it's at least a moving target, and you also can't play on XBox Live at all with pirated games. The Wii hasn't done any of that. You could pirate Strikers Charged and play it online day one. Sony releases a firmware update every month that makes it damn near impossible for a successful mod chip/hack to ever work on the PS3. Sure, the Bioshock thing sucked but I personally had no problem with it and that rumor of spyware (it's called a rootkit), turned out not to be true.
The analogy of yours doesn't work, because Banks have some of the most secured systems in the world and are very rarely ever robbed, except at gun point. What I'm saying is equivalent to a bank leaving their vault unlocked and open and complaining when someone walks in and takes money out. 8/30/2007 11:32:17 AM |

if games came down to $30-$40, I don't think there would be nearly the market for mod chips
The fact that 1 game runs $60, yet if you try and sell it back because you don't want it anymore, you get $20 at the most
it's basically like textbooks. Keep coming out with new editions that you have to have, and once it's been used the price drops dramatically...until the store tries to resell it. 8/30/2007 11:34:16 AM |

bought tiger woods 08, and also put a $5 deposit for guitar hero 3..
if you want to put a deposit, i recomend going to best buy, because the promotion the have is a free guitar strap, ebgames/gamestop only give you a poster.
only downside is that its not a "guarantee", they get the certain amount of that game sent to customer service so you dont have to go wonder around for it on the sales grounds.
but i think ebgames/gamestop does guarantee a copy. and they said something about competing, so if you tell them best buy has the strap as a promotion, they might give you one also. 9/4/2007 10:40:53 AM |

holy crap... so i put in tiger woods 08 last night, and man talk about a difference...
07 was sooo easy, 08 is pretty tricky compared. they def. tweaked it up a bit. and it even goes into swing detail, you can set your player up with the swing stance that you want.
man, its goooood stuff, but real damn tricky. its nothing like 07. they did good

^^^ WTF? Have they not played mario kart DS, you can race multiples of the same character. How does 16 player mean 16 different characters? 9/6/2007 9:32:59 PM |
ussjbroli All American 4518 Posts user info edit post |
^ they're hoping that having 16 characters playable will mean that nintendo will make at least 16 different characters to choose from. they tend to make enough characters so that they don't need doubles. MK DS had 13 characters, so it wouldn't be hard to scrounge up 3 more
hell, the could just take the set list from double dash (20)... although what would really be cool would be to make every character that was ever playable from the other MK games and have them.
