Probably MidwayUSA. The Meprolight's are reasonably priced, and mine have held up very well over the last couple years, though they have the Trijicon and other slightly more expensive brands. 9/29/2010 2:27:58 PM |

Was reading a few pages back (40 or so) on the 12 gauge for home defense discussion. Looking to get one, and had looked at the Maverick 88 as a means to save some cash against the Mossberg 500 or Remington 870.
After reading through it, I'm leaning towards one of the latter two, used. Anyone looking to get rid of one, or a recommendation to the contrary?
I'm not concerned with something that's spotless, I'm looking for reliability for the dollar. 10/5/2010 8:04:34 PM |

Go with the Maverick. I bought a 500 a few years ago when I had not heard of the 88. Save yourself $100 if buying new, or you could get a 500 used for about the same price.
You can't go wrong with any of them. Handle one of these two and the 870, and just go with whatever feels best. 10/6/2010 3:40:24 AM |

If you have any questions about the conversion, let me know. I did a full conversion on my 7.62, and replaced the furniture on my S12, so I may be able to help if anything isn't clearly documented elsewhere.10/18/2010 1:38:51 PM |

I found a gunsmith who does lots of these who'll move the trigger for $100...I figure that's worth it to save the effort and make sure I don't screw up something in terms of trigger setup.
What furniture did you go with? I assume that's a 5-minute affair to swap all of that out? 10/18/2010 1:48:13 PM |

I know this has been asked many times, but the standard length of a rifle barrel - 16" in nc?
Does that mean I am SOL for a shorter barrel other than establishing a trust, filling out the paperwork and paying the extra fee? 10/18/2010 5:09:53 PM |
zep All American 4169 Posts user info edit post |
^^^^^ woops, yeah meant to say top of page 63 in the used gun thread.
^, yeah, the NFA(?) establishes that a rifle must be a minimum length from bolt face to muzzle of 16" or greater to avoid being a SBR and having to do the trust and paperwork. Although you can permantly attach a muzzle device as long as the overall length is 16" or greater. That's what all the business with the permanentaly attached flash hiders on 14.5" ARs is these days.

picking up a Kel-Tec P3AT and a Saiga 12 this week.
planning on mounting an ArmaLaser to the P3AT, and doing a pistol grip/wood furniture conversion to the Saiga, along with mounting a red-dot plate sight on top. Undecided on whether I want to put a folding stock on it. 10/19/2010 5:26:48 PM |

If you have a dremel, a riveter, and are even remotely mechanically inclined, you can easily save $100. I did mine in a single evening, and it was actually a lot of fun. There's very little actual 'smithing involved - basically, just cutting/moving/riveting the triggerguard, and grinding the hammer if you want to retain a BHO.
That said, if someone will do it for a $100 and your time isn't worth it, then by all means have them do it. That's very, very cheap. Most folks charge a couple hundred bucks or more to do it correctly.
As for furniture, I have a Tapco kit on the 12, and a combo of K-var/Tapco stuff on the 7.62. Both are good quality, so get whatever works for you. 10/20/2010 8:32:35 AM |

It's about 5 miles from campus, then the shooting portion is at the Wake County Shooting Range in Holly Springs. It will run from 10am to around 7-7:30. $60 for anyone off of tww. Next ones will be 11/14, 11/20, and 12/4.

I have seen/used them... pretty good for quick target aquisition, but not worth the price in my mind (but this is for guns that there are other laser options that are cheaper and just as effective... for such a small gun, I think the options are pretty limited) 10/30/2010 6:22:51 PM |

Is it actually helpful to have a laser on your handgun for personal protection? I've always heard they were overrated? 10/31/2010 8:37:41 PM |

I don't have any experience why one but I've heard they're incredibly helpful...just make sure you have the basics down first.
The built-in sights on the LCP are pretty tiny, and the addition of the Crimson Trace laser is supposed to make it somewhat of a tack-driver.
That's what I've read, anyway... 10/31/2010 8:45:53 PM |

Of the people I've spoken to (who train reguarly with a CT laser or some variation) recommend them for low visibility (dark) target acquisition.
Useless in daylight. Not really interested in using it as a deterrent.10/31/2010 10:54:49 PM |

I don't mind using them for some dry-fire training. I'll load my gun with some snap caps and have a laser on the wall and watch it as I pull the trigger to make sure I'm not jerking the trigger or anticipating the boom by pushing the gun down. But I don't like them for actually shooting. For me it takes me a couple of extra beats to get my laser on target vs using the sights. YMMV10/31/2010 11:04:59 PM |
