In 10 years photography will no longer be a revered profession. Amateurs with cheap cameras will take photos better than any in this thread, and the job of photographer will be relegated to high-schoolers or the otherwise unemployable. In other words, taking photos will be a menial job no one really wants.

You can already see it, as pros turn to gimmicks like HDR and this thing:

in a failing attempt to distance themselves from the masses. Videographers might hold out a little longer.

i think it is awesome that amateurs with "cheap" cameras will be able to take great shots. makes it more fun for people and will save money in the long run for those that don't have to hire professional photographers...

i think the profs will still have a steady business, though.

I played around with a D40x for the first time today (first D/SLR ever, really). I really like the way that some of the shots turned out. This one is my favorite:



I honestly have no idea if this shot is good though. Feel free to tear it apart and/or offer suggestions. It hasn't been retouched or anything. I'd have no idea how to do that.

In that price range I'd probably spend a few extra dollars and get the similar kit that replaces that 75-300 with the 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS. I saw that kit on B&H for just under $800 recently.

Hey everybody. I just started reading this thread in the past few days and have gotten about halfway through. This is hands down the best thread on TWW. My wife just bought a Canon Xsi to expand her work portfolio (she's a wedding/event planner) and these are my first attempts at photography as a potential hobby. All are taken with the kit lens or the 55-250mm f/4-5.6 that came as a part of the package deal. Please let me know what you think. Any constructive criticism would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I bought a big stash of film at Southeastern Camera in Cary before they closed that shop. I think they still have a location in N. Raleigh somewhere though. You can order the film online as well. Any 120 format film works in the Holga.

The b&w is Ilford Delta 400
The color is Fuji NPC 160

Some were developed by Southeastern, some by mail at a camera shop in Kansas that was much cheaper. It's still not cheap, it ends up costing anywhere between $.50-$1 per print for processing and the film is about $4 / roll.

Nah son, cop that Blackbird Fly. It is cooler looking, cheaper, uses 35mm film (read:cheaper), and you won't be a poseur. While Holgas and Lomos are cool and all, I think they are more often than not used as a crutch for people who would otherwise be taking completely uninteresting photos.

I apologize if this opinion makes me an asshole, I just don't understand the huge appeal.

There are 2600+ photos there from over 5 years of photography with 5 different digital cameras (plus the Holga of course). I'm not claiming to be a great photographer but I don't think all of mine are uninteresting.

I like shooting with for the obvious reasons but also because it really forces me to stop and think before I shoot since I know I only have 12 exposures per roll and they are expensive to develop. Plus it's fun...

Honestly shooting with it is a pain in the ass: you have to hole up in a dark room to change out the film, roll it by hand, and hope that you don't drop the flimsy thing when you are shooting and have the back pop off, exposing half of your roll (this happened to me). Then you have to ship the film off or wait a week to have it developed locally and pay an arm and a leg per print.

Plus there aren't that many more, I've only scanned 26 of the prints I've taken and posted 5 of the better ones above.

Senez, those pics of the christmas stuff looks like it has a little bit of a warm overcast on it, it just looks a bit dull in color. The Bokeh is really nice on some of those, but watch out, they can prove to be very distracting if your Bokeh turns out to be a lot of highlights; specially when your focal point isn't entirely well lit.

Use a small desk lamp next to the subject but don't directly light it. Instead use a white poster board or foamcore to bounce the light at a 45 degree angle to add some fill light. Re-shoot and see what happens.

Ha, my wife was looking at me funny as it was, moving her centerpiece around and taking some ornaments off the tree. If I break out the poster board for lighting purposes, she's going to think I've gone nuts. Part of the issue in there, too, is that 3 of the 5 lights were burned out.

I really want a 50mm lens but the 1.4 is obviously more expensive than the 1.8. Is there that much of a difference in the pictures between the two? Should I hold out for the 1.4?
