True, but down the stretch that certainly wasn't the case. Here's the last few games of the season (in reverse order):
Quote : | "ACC Tournament – Maryland Brandon Costner, 5 Ben McCauley, 14 Courtney Fells, 4 Total 69 Senior % = 33.3%
Miami Brandon Costner, 12 Ben McCauley, 6 Total - 64 Senior % = 28.1%
BC Courtney Fells, 11 Brandon Costner, 18 Ben McCauley, 20 Total 74 66.2%
Maryland Courtney Fells, 10 Brandon Costner, 16 Ben McCauley, 10 Totals 64 Senior % = 56.3%
WF Brandon Costner, 10 Ben McCauley, 12 Courtney Fells, 8 Total 78 Senior % = 38.5%
UVA Courtney Fells, 9 Brandon Costner, 0 Ben McCauley, 10 Total 72 Senior % = 26.4%
UNC Brandon Costner, 12 Ben McCauley, 9 Courtney Fells, 7 Total 80 Senior % = 35%" |
Over the last 7 games, the "Big 3" - averaged only 40% of the scoring, and only 36% if you throw out Senior Night - accounted for more than 38.5% of the scoring only twice, with one of those being on Senior night.
I think the numbers tell a very different story than the common talking point that "we're losing half our offense." If the last 7 games are any indication, then that's certainly not the case.3/31/2009 8:44:27 AM |

FWIW, the 2001-2002 team made it to the NCAA second round after losing 50% of its scoring and 70% of its rebounding from the 2000-2001 team that went 13-16. Losing Thornton, Inge, Kelley, and Wilkins ended up being a positive when replacing them with Hodge, Evtimov, and Powell and allowing PT for Marcus Melvin and Scooter Sherrill.
The other factor was that after that dismal 2000-2001 season Herb got off his ass, installed a new offense, and became a better coach. Hopefully Sid will work this offseason to do the same.
And before someone replies with "that recruiting class was much better!!!" - yes, Hodge was a top-10 player, but Brown was barely off the McD AA roster this year. Powell was a top-50 guy (same as Howell), and Evtiomov was pretty much off everyone's radar (similar to Wood)... 3/31/2009 9:37:15 AM |

Well, considering they averaged about 45% of the minutes a game (~30 mpg each=90mpg out of a possible 200 minutes), 40% from 3 starting seniors ain't that great. Hopefully we'll have a few new scorers step-up.

Levi Watkins was very highly rated in that class too.
RSCI (the only source I can find that goes back that far) had that class at:
Hodge: 7 Watkins: 60 Powell: 65 Collins: 112
This site is actually pretty awesome for recruiting trends: http://statsheet.com/mcb/teams/north-carolina-state/recruiting
Our 2004 and 2005 classes should have set us up for Top 3 in the ACC for years to come. Check this out:
2004 Simmons: 34 Brackman: 60 Grant: 78
2005: Costner: 19 Fells: 35 McCauley: ~100
We basically had an entire rotation full of sub-100 recruits with Cam still around. Only thing missing was a solid 1.

Simonn... You make a lot of good points and aren't nearly as bad as everyone makes you out to be. But if you want to be taken even somewhat seriously, don't say stupid shit like ^^^
The last thing we need is to turn yet another thread into a Sendek flame war...
And yes, 40% is a lot, but you can't point to a single guy in the Big 3 that, in the 2nd half of the season, was the go-to guy offensively. Tracy Smith took over the post and Javi handled the ball. When the offense was clicking, it ran through those two players almost exclusively. That says a lot about how dependent the team was on the Big 3.
We're going to miss those guys, but aside from the overall youth of the team, I don't see a reason to panic over where the offensive production is coming from. 3/31/2009 11:48:54 AM |

True, but i guess my point was 40% isn't a lot of scoring for the minutes they averaged. Those minutes are going to be distributed out to Tracy, C.J., Brown, etc. Hopefully they'll be a little more efficient, and we'll be alright.3/31/2009 11:57:17 AM |

I don't mind optimism in game threads or in prediction threads, etc, etc... but I can't stand when people claim to have "insider" sources and just blow smoke up everyone's ass. I don't know if it's a defensive mechanism trying to protect a coach that SOME people think is on the hot seat or what... but all it does is get people MORE pissed off when they players act like we don't even exist... 3/31/2009 1:43:28 PM |
