I wouldn't want to follow my brother's footsteps either. Feeling like the fans would expect you to be Philip every game.

Name me 10 programs that have been better than LSU in the past decade or so? UF, USC, Texas, Ohio State, maybe Alabama or Oklahoma. They are a top-10 program until they consistently are mediocre for a few consecutive years like Notre Dame or FSU.
They may not be top-10 in 2010-2011, but they'll be back up in the rankings probably by 2011-2012.

Doesn't matter what happens down the road, but currently it is still a top 10 program in the country. Look at recruiting classes, record over the past 5 years, 10 years, bowl wins, 2 NC? whatever else.
Top 5? No, but name 10 that are more prestigious at the moment. 8/7/2010 9:36:44 AM |

quarterback Vad Lee from Durham Hillside had originally planned on a verbal Saturday at Hillside’s scrimmage.
Instead he visited Wake Forest Saturday us today. Word is he tried to commit to GT but Paul said no unless he canceled his other visits.
Durham sources say the kid will not go that far from home and sign with State but GT sources are supremely confident on a GT commitment. He should be decided in the next couple of weeks.

That's a whole different argument. Of course I'm not gonna argue that they're one of the top-10 teams in the past decade. I was referring to the past few years.
Quote : | "They are a top-10 program until they consistently are mediocre for a few consecutive years like Notre Dame or FSU." | .
Records: 2008: 8-5 2009: 9-4
Each of the previous three seasons before the 2008 season, they finished with double-digit wins (11, 11, and 12). So to say that they have dropped off somewhat since then would be accurate.
The past two seasons they have stayed in the top-10 for the first half of the season, mostly due to pre-season polls and winning their cupcake games and a few conference games, such as:
App. St North Texas Miss. St. Vanderbilt mediocre-Auburn teams Louisiana-Lafayette
Then they have gotten to the 2nd half of the season and lost some conference games and fell out of the top-10. Actually, in 2008, they dropped out of the top-25 completely and didn't finish the season ranked with a 7-5 regular season record.
So my point is that sure they were good in '07 when they won the NC. But since then they have lost their top-10 edge that they used to have.8/9/2010 10:58:35 AM |

^^ You are using a 2 year window to back up your argument.. during that time they had some off field issues at QB which obviously affected their team and recruiting, if Ryan Perrilloux doesn't get kicked off the team who knows what happens. They've had top 10 recruiting classes during that time so it isn't like the recruiting matched a drop on the field, they are still putting together recruiting classes that only top 10 programs can put together. Not to mention if they beat Penn St. last year in their bowl game which they really should have they would have finished last year in the top 10. I'd agree with you if their recruiting classes started to look like ours, but that simply isn't the case.
You sound like a 4th grader that has no concept of time. "The top 10 edge they USE to have..." it was just 3 seasons ago they won a national championship. Acting like they are Notre Dame and nobody they are recruiting was alive to see their NC.
I guess a few though to you is 2?
Once again, name 10 programs you'd put ahead of them. 8/9/2010 11:25:53 AM |
MORR1799 All American 3051 Posts user info edit post |
In no particular order:
Florida Texas Ohio St. USC Oklahoma Alabama Virginia Tech Penn State Iowa Boise State
Right now, these programs are who I'd rank ahead of LSU, based on the last two seasons and heading into the upcoming season. They have had and still have a top-10 "edge" to them which, to me, means any one of them either have contended and/or could contend for the title.
Yeah, recruiting is important. But UCLA has had monster recruiting classes recently too. Would you consider them a top-10 program? You think Boise State gives a shit about recruiting rankings?
How about Florida winning the basketball championship in '06 and '07? Are they still a top 10 b-ball program or have they fallen off since then?
Quote : | "I guess a few though to you is 2? " |
I'm sorry, how many is a few to you? Because I understand it to mean a small value, like less than 5. I could use the word "couple" if it makes you feel better.
Don't get me wrong - I still think highly of LSU. Their program prestige is elite level and they are using it for top-level recruits. But based on what I've seen on the field recently, I'd rank them in the 11-15 range, not top-10.8/9/2010 1:00:35 PM |

I think you're having trouble discerning between the terms "top 10 team" and "top 10 program" 8/9/2010 1:28:41 PM |
titans78 All American 4038 Posts user info edit post |
^^ Done with it, I could write an essay and back it up with why LSU is a top 10 program(the ONLY thing your backing your claim up with is basically 1 down season, and once again last year there were a fringe top 10 team and would have been if they beat Penn St). And once again if they prize QB doesn't flake out who knows what happens. Obviously recruiting classes isn't the only thing, but if you are talking top 10 program you have to look at everything, recruiting, record, bowls, conference, etc.
So let me get this straight, LSU wins a national championship and then goes 8-5 and 9-4 and they AREN'T a top 10 program, yet Iowa goes 7-5, 6-7, 6-6, 9-4, 11-2 over the past 5 seasons and they are? I didn't know finishing tied for 4th in the Big 10 and getting an Outback bowl win was what top 10 programs are made of.8/9/2010 2:30:28 PM |

Pound for pound, Maurice Morgan from North Lenoir High in La Grange, N.C., is one of the best athletes in the 2011 recruiting class. At a Shrine Bowl combine in May, Morgan checked in at 6-foot-2, 212 pounds and blistered a 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds.
