I mean, yay, but this ain't some sort of life changing win for me. I just don't have a great deal of nationalism i guess.

i'll take your word for it, as i didn't watch, and i'm assuming you did. but i still like germany. england's inability to score seems like cause for concern. i also think germany played today in 3rd gear for most of the game and was missing their best scorer. that being said, should we beat ghana (which we shouldn't overlook, i think they're dangerous and match up well against us) i'd rather see england again this tournament. V i know, unlikely, but i'd like the best scenario possible.

They haven't faced a team yet with that amount of talent.

I guess I'm just like "meh"

I'm not a huge soccer fan, but I don't know how anyone can shit on what we saw today. The US game was entertaining as hell ... gut-wrenching at times.

If nothing else, it's giving casual fans a nice bridge to football season.

I'll say this, I saw twice as many people in the sports bar today than I saw for the Super Bowl. And I heard it was like that all over town.

For a 9:30am game.

In all fairness, the Super Bowl is pretty much a stay at home game for almost everyone. But I was at a bar this morning and it was awesome.

And I'm calling it right now, Chile eliminates Spain on Saturday.

Not that any path through the World Cup is easy, but the US's bracket looks somewhat favorable:

USA/Ghana --- Uruguay/South Korea

on the other side there's: Germany/England --- Argentina/Mexico

yea, the place I went this morning had a ton more energy than when I went to the same bar for the NBA game 7 last week. Was so much fun. The place erupted when we scored that goal; you would have thought we had 200 people there instead of 50 with how loud it was.

"Make no mistake, June 23, 2010, will go down as one of the defining dates in American soccer. People in the rest of the world can deride the standard of the U.S. game all they want, but now they do so at their own peril. More importantly, the 1-0 victory over Algeria plants the sport's flag even deeper in the consciousness of U.S. fans (as opposed to soccer fans) who were ready to go back to work had the Americans lost and not advanced.

I mean, consider that the 2006 tournament cost the United States $1.2 billion in lost labor because of the number of people who skipped out of work to catch the World Cup telecasts. And that team went three-and-out in that tournament. In 2010, the U.S. didn't lose a single match in the group stage and is now through to the round of 16 -- so brace yourself for a total collapse of the American economy. (Oh wait…)"

By calling me a gd moron, you're saying Chile has absolutely no chance to beat Spain? Because if they do and the Swiss tie/beat Honduras, that is exactly what will happen.

Actually Chile just has to draw for Spain to likely be fucked. But, yeah I'm a goddamn moron.

Probably more of an indicator of the economy and how many people in the country don't have jobs anymore so they are able to be in a bar at 10AM on a Wednesday.

I'm def. not a soccer fan at all, in fact I'm generally anti soccer for the most part. But I love the World Cup, it is a totally different beast and few things are as exciting than a goal in the World Cup. I know without a doubt if I could do anything in any sport professional or collegiate it would be to score a goal in a World Cup match(preferably a meaningful one).

Could very well happen. But to think Spain will waltz over a very good Chile team (better than Swiss, imo) is a bit naive.

So Tuesday at 6:30, mexico was playing and every bar in san diego was packed with loud fans. Today at 6:30, usa was playing, and it was a typical wednesday morning. No bar in sight was open.

It couldn't have been THAT exciting considering nobody even scored in regulation. So you watched guys run back and forth for 91 minutes before one scored? exciting.

It did look really cool the way they showed highlights mixed in with england highlights with the time on the screen at the end of sportscenter. Apparently, england thought they had advanced at one point and then us scored at the end to out-advance them? Does anyone have a video like this or can explain how it all went down?

My nerves are shot after watching Germany. I hope its more relaxed against the Poms. 2-0 up after 25 minutes would do just fine.

Both teams combined for 41 shots and 14 shots on goal! Just because they didn't put a number on a sheet of paper didn't make it any less exciting.

And the fact that we didn't score until 90' made that score that much more exciting and dramatic.
We went from refs waiving away winning goals in the previous match, and then waiving away a potential winner in this match, getting bloodied, knocked down, trampled on, to getting the best group finish our team has seen in 80 years.

If you don't find that exciting, either you didn't actually watch any World Cup and you're a god-damned troll, or you're a communist robot.

unbelievable couple of days of soccer,
this has gone from one of the worst world cups ever to a potentially very good cup

every great world cup has at least one memorable game and USA's game just might be that one for this cup

Are you seriously using San Diego as a measure of the public? San Diego is one of the worst sports towns on the planet. Try making your rounds on any college football Saturday and it will be the same.

I'm not a big soccer fan. But damn it's been nice to have something to fill one of the dead months between Hockey and Football.

I wonder if this'll help the MLS get a few more fans. Probably not, but anything's possible.

There is a HUGE difference between the MLS and International play. For instance, International play is fun to watch while MLS play is sloppy and rather disheartening

i dont know if you've watched an MLS game in the last 5 years but its virtually indistinguishable from certain European leagues, in my opinion it is a world class league
and i predict that european players will start to take it seriously and consider moving here and once 1 or 2 major stars do so there will be an avalanche of transfers and the world of soccer will be changed overnight

^^^regardless of any discussion of the quality of play in the MLS vs. european leagues the MLS simply does not have the money to suppot any kind of mass exodus of european players into the MLS. its just not there. the money in the MLS isn't even close to even smaller european clubs and leagues. you might peel off a couple players here and there, but what you are predicting simply can't happen.
