I'm honestly not sure what the deal entails, but New Belgium and NC State have signed a 5-year deal to produce Old Tuffy. Makes me wonder if there isn't some limitation on what other schools they can work with, particularly in-state schools.

I agree, but I think choosing a brewery that has a rather large, almost native, presence in the state is a pretty good option. New Belgium has come pretty hard to our state and is a regular attraction for tourist and locals alike in Asheville.

Yeah they toed the line of local by going with New Belgium (and I am interested to check out their Asheville spot sometime soon), but still there's plenty of established NC born (not even to mention Raleigh born) breweries.

I'm not sure how the licensing split is done with "Ol' Tuffy" but it would be cool if they could do a yearly release of it if State owns the licensing. That way we could see a different brewery, or at least collab, from various NC Breweries as time marches on.

I talked about this idea over a decade ago with various friends. Have any local brewery come out with a sub 5.0% ABV beer, throw it in a red can, and vaguely refer to it as "Wolf Beer" or something similar, and print money come tailgating season. Having the reach of New Belgium and official licensing just turns it into an even bigger money-printing factory. It doesn't even matter if it's an average beer, people will buy it as seen thus far.

Breweries in Greenville, Chapel Hill, etc. should be taking notes and getting their purple and baby blue cans ready.

i think you guys have it backwards. New Belgium reached out to State for this opportunity after the huge success of the Old Aggie collaboration in Colorado. I think we should feel fortunate that they chose us and didn't go to the other brewery school in Boone with the opportunity.

Picked up some Tuffy yesterday. It is exactly what it should be.

Tastes like a Bud but with more flavor. Easy drinking lager.

It's a great beer for what it was made to be.

And keep in mind opinions are like assholes.

Agree that ECU would love to have this type of deal going, but what brewery is really chomping at the bit to partner with them?

UNC has no interest in this. They know their fans and branding, and it doesn't seem like something UNC would really license to do.

Problem with this is that you need a brewery big enough to partner with(make enough product) but that is also interested in working with you. New Belgium has definitely made waves with their 2 college beers, but I doubt they want to compete against themselves with a 2nd beer in NC. I could definitely see them creating more college beers but bet they'll target other states first(SC and TN make sense).

I could see someone in NC trying to partner with Sierra Nevada or Wicked Weed(both big enough to support this), but I can't imagine WW being remotely interested in this type of project but Sierra Nevada would actually make a lot of sense.

App is like half the size of State, right? i know they've got a good beer scene there and great tailgating and stuff. but the alumni and fan base for NC State is way larger than App State in terms of appealing to a large consumer base.

Had a bunch of Old Tuffys today. Good damn beer. Way better than the average lite whateverthefuck. Sure it's not a complex IPA, but I figure most of the haters ITT are reacting to the hype that the beer has bc of the badass label/association

i saw the complaints and so actually had low expectations, but i liked it. it's a good basic beer, and if it's true that they will only serve OT, coors light and corona at football games it's the easy choice.

They haven't said what beers yet but OT is confirmed and "one hard seltzer".

Also, as expected, no draft and only in cans and "plastic" bottles, assuming they meant aluminum here.

I'd be fine with 3-4 beers and a hard seltzer choice, seems fair for the first season.

Though the "1 beer per person" is a little annoying for people with spouses, but hey, better than nothing.

i only occasionally run into the 1 drink per person rule when at a bar...they'll ask for the ID of the other person i'm buying for. but it definitely seems like a thing that gets enforced in <10% of places.

Regardless if you've been able to get it at other venues, NC State has made it pretty clear in their rules they've published that it's going to be 1 beer per customer.

I understand why they do it, but I do wish they'd let me bring 2 IDs and get 2 beers, just because I'd truly be getting a beer for someone else that is of legal drinking age and I know she just isn't going to want to walk to get it so I'll end up having to share mine, haha.

Honestly I'll probably just leave my seat and hit 2 spots and then return with 2 beers instead.
