How can I tell what my print will look like as an 8x10?

I need help! I need to know how to print something that isn't the right ratio for an 8x10 but get it into that size without losing resolution...ie no pixelation.

Bleh. Of all the people who take dslr's to Yosemite I must have the lowest ratio of good/bad photos.

^1st pic under exposed and the pic needs to be reframed a bit, but It's very cool that the snow was "misting". Def like your stance, lol. You should have framed the 2nd picture as a landscape instead of a portrait ratio.

Ya, exposure is always the trouble in Yosemite Valley since a good part of the Valley can be shaded while the sun is lighting the walls up like a mirror. Dusk & Dawn is the easy time for photographers...I also need to start more post-processing my pics.

There should be contrast settings in your camera somewhere in the menu. You can lower the contrast in some scenes to even out the tones such as having a bright sky, partly lite/partly shadow landscape, then go back in post to give some contrast in certain area's.

A scene that has a lot of white in it, such as snow, will trick the camera's metering, even worse, snow does reflect quite a bit of light back so it tricks it even more. It's like shooting on white concrete, up the exposure by 1/2 - 1 stop. Plus having some sky in the frame will also trick the camera if you have your metering setup for the full scene.

i'm not really sure what you're asking here

in photoshop/gimp when you open the selection tool you can set it to pick a specific aspect ratio, so you can either crop it to an acceptable 8x10 selection area

or expand the canvas size and make an 8x10 box behind your photo and have a thin (or thick, whatever) border around your print

but i have no clue if thats what you're asking

I'm not sure what you're asking either. In addition to what he said ^^, if you're talking about making a quality 8x10 print from a web-quality jpeg file that's about 500 pixels wide without "losing resolution...ie no pixelation", it aint gonna happen.

Anyone have recommendations on rechargeable AA batteries? A few other photog's I've talked to say they swear by the La Crosse charger and Sanyo eneloop batteries.

I'm getting one of those chargers soon (it's cheaper at amazon, with free shipping - $40 regularly, and apparently it was $25 last friday sale).

Sanyo makes good cells. I bought a lot of batteries for RC and sanyo was always the premium brand. However, I would buy whatever is the best value, without buying no-name cells. They don't give you enough information to actually differentiate different cells, it's all marketing.

^^^My buddy has one (the sigma 30 1.4) for his D200 and it is his favorite lens. He's got a lot more epensive glass, but he said that lens stays on his camera most of the time. I'd certainly recommend it, I plan on trying to pick one up soon.

i'm approaching my 200-picture limit on flickr...for $25/year, is the flickr pro a good deal? any other free services that are as good as flickr? i like that i can upload full quality pictures and arrange them in sets...and i like how flickr's set up

^^i'm in the same boat, but i'm gonna go pro once snake-hunting season starts back up (probably march). I've got both flickr and photobucket accounts, and i like flickr a hell of a lot more. fortunately, from my friends i've talked to, theres more that comes with a pro account than just extra storage. so i'm just gonna upload whatever i need to to my photobucket account for the meanwhile, and when i've got a lil extra green, i'll drop the $25 dollar bucks on a flickr pro account. but im really trying to save up for a flash (probably the 430 ex) first.

anyway, ill share a decent pic of my dog i got recently while playing with my macro.

Got my new Canon XSi today, my first dSLR. Haven't had much time to shoot but hopefully I can get out tomorrow. Already saving for a macro lens and a telephoto, I can see myself spending way too much money on this hobby.

Got to test out the new tripod today. Afterwards I realized I had overexposed most of my shots and used D2X mode 1 instead of vivid. I guess I need to start shooting RAW.

^1 sec @ f22 on both. The top one was shot with 18-200 at 20mm.... bottom 50mm 1.8. I got the Manfrotto 055XPROB and a Markins ballhead. Being able to turn the shaft on the tripod horizontally came in handy on these shots. It makes it possible to get the camera almost on the ground. Yea I am still continplating on the rock in the foreground.
