page 95!

I'm now at 140! my original goal was 145. I started at around 160.

I've only been doing cardio for the past couple of months, running and watching my calories and eating healthy.

I think it's time I add in strength training and working with weights.

also, how the hell are you guys keeping under 100g carbs/day?

I eat a lot of grapefruit and bananas and cover 100g on fruit alone.

What's your bench now?

I am curious to see how it progresses with all this work aerobic/cardio-ish work you are doing.

i know you're probably talking more to the boys about this but i stopped logging calories, carbs, protein, etc. i know it's different for everyone and if you have a specific goal in mind (to be a hot ripped piece of ass so you can ask out your crush) then i can see how staying within a specific carb range would be important.

i found it's easier if i just focus on eating the right kind of foods and trusting that everything will balance out on its own.

grapefruit does not burn fat. That's just an old myth. It's definitely healthy, but it is not an "excellent fat burner"

Why are you trying to get super cut to impress a girl at Christmas? Are you just going to find excuses to take your shirt off? Trying to lose significant weight during football season is a fool's errand. Just be happy to maintain while most people are packing on the pounds for the Holidays.

I'll bet you 5 laftabucks you probably read somewhere on the internet that grapefruit is an excellent fat burner...

.. but if it says the opposite then it must be false!

that said, my grandma and her twin brother each ate a grapefruit every morning for most of their adult lives and they lived to be 95 (they both smoked like chimneys and drank like sailors)

I'd imagine that most people in this thread would agree that it's time for a 2012 thread. 2011's fitness season is over people. SF seems to get it

Yeah, being cut in winter doesn't make sense. Might as get big gains during Fall/Winter, then cut when Spring rolls around and look that much better.

Oh wow! This will be a busy holiday season for ya. The holidays are always so hectic ... then throw wedding parties into the mix. Whew!

But def good motivation to stay fit. You'll need high energy levels!

Dharney - You are not in a calorie deficit if you are gaining weight. Unless you are just retaining water like a mofo... If that's the cause look to reduce sodium and/or stress. Stress increases cortisol which causes water retention. Look to improve sleep and reduce training volume.

Jbrick - Depends on your definition of being in shape. Mass gains allow me to push heavier weights. Then I work to maintain the strength when I cut. Resulting in new strength levels at lower body weights. Seems to work for me, but I am sure there's a few successful ways to go about it.

My goals aren't being bigger and/or stronger. I want to stay lean, be in good cardio shape, and still look good...even in the middle of the holidays

Therefore, I have no reason for "gains" in the winter.

unrelated, but watching people use wrist straps to do non weighted pull ups is fucking lol

this seems to be a trend at my gym

i dont care how jacked you are, but if you're having to strap up to do your first set of 5 non-weighted pull ups, you're doing something wrong

also, a local lingerie shop had set up a stand in the lobby yesterday. that was weird.

That's a good point, but the state with the most "fit" population is Colorado. A state that most people would consider cold weather. I don't know where Florida ranks, but I bet it's all the retirees screwing up the statistics

"calorie deficit"

You know, CI=CO is bad enough, but I realize now that the term "calorie deficit" and saying you are in a calorie deficit is ridiculous. Are you living in a metabolic lab? Did you sit your metabolism down and give it a stern talking to? Seriously, what the hell does that mean?

^^ I never claimed that Florida is the most fit. We have a lot of overweight folks. But there are a lot of bodybuilding and fitness professionals here.

We have tons of statistics on obesity from state to state ... and fitness by state is based on a complicated matrix involving gyms, trails, parks, smoking, cancer, etc.

However, most people I know lose weight when they move here from other states. It's just so warm most of the time that the heat can be a bit of an appetite suppressant.

I'm kinda nervous to test for my yellow belt.. We have to test in front of everyone, and I think there will be a bunch of kids there. Those little a-holes aren't very friendly. -.-

When he says mass gain, I think he means muscle. Obviously, you're going to get a little fat in there too, but the idea is to be strength training and getting big gains that way.

Now, if your idea of mass gaining is sitting on the couch and eating 4,000 calories a day, yeah, you'll gain a lot. Somehow, though, I don't think it's going to be the kind of mass you want, and when it comes time to cut, you're going to be fighting an uphill battle.

it means he's using his BMR to judge appropriate calorie intake. Via the Harris-Benedict equation, or something like the MedGem metabolism testing. Don't be obtuse.

I got MedGem for free from work as part of BC/BS wellness plan... wee!

and yah trying to stay true to my deficit and not seeing weightloss gains consistantly is frustrating :x

granted I've almost lost 50 lbs I keep plateau-ing for a week or two at a time. I started seriously weightlifting again for the first time in almost 8 years and have seen a sizeable increase in my total wieghts of the last few months, so I'm content to believe the delay in "weight loss" is due to lean muscle mass gains counterbalancing fat loss

serious cutting for me starts next week.

Can you have agave nectar? I keep the light amber one in the house and now use it instead of honey or syrup. It's really good.

Nope :/

No honey, agave nectar, anything ending in -ol, brown sugar, molasses, coconut milk (I think), and a bunch of the synthetic sweeteners. Cane sugar is ok though

No truvia either?

Truvia isn't exactly an artificial sweetener but it's also natural because it comes from a plant.

Have you tried googling alternatives?

Oh, truvia and stevia are fine. It's not really about alternatives as much as its looking at the fructose to glucose ratio

Table sugar has like a 1:1 ratio, a bunch of the other ones don't though
