Ok, so I don't know much apparently, but why is Steve Fisher such a laughable option? The scandal?

I would have thought by page 10 people would have realized that posting pictures of random people or saying random people were gonna be the next coach was no longer funny. I suppose my standards for TWW are much higher than they should be.. much higher.

im not so sure turning down $2.5MM to stay and grab $ 1.7MM in CUSA is embarrassing to NCSU as much as it is to Josh Pastner, if true

no deathbed coaches. We don't need a Prosser-situation on our hands.

^^^So?

Coach K is 64 years old. Roy Williams is 60. Jim Calhoun is 68.

I'm sure none of those programs care that they have an old coach.

We'd get 4-5 years out of him before he retires hopefully?

I'm just saying, he's old, but he's a pretty proven winner.

Besides, don't just go by his picture, which does look bad. Watch him....he's still got some life in those old bones.

All that's missing is a walker and a colostomy bag.

And the problem with your^ statement above is "hopefully."

Hopefully don't cut it no more.

"Hopefully, Sid will inspire the guys enough to win some games."

Holy shit that picture is from 3 years ago.

In my opinion, I think the guy is best suited for where he is now. Good position to basically rule the Mountain West (as long as recruiting remains up to par), and you can't get any better than San Diego weather.

^^^

Sarcasm.

And you need to make hires that you think will be your last hire for another 15-20 years. You don't make hires to fill in gaps. You grab a Barnes if he says he'll be here for at least 10 years...but you don't take a chance on an old Fisher with his history who hasn't been around a major conference program for a long time.

Well, he could answer the hopefully part.

I don't know what his future plans are, but he would. If he's planning to coach 5 more years, then why not get him?

He's taken San Diego State to the postseason 5 years in a row, and has 3 NCAA tourney appearances and 3 conference titles in 6 years, at SDSU of all places.

I don't love the guy, but are you so certain he'd be worse than Gregg Marshal or Mike Lonergan?

I don't like either one of those guys.

I like Grant and Smart (besides the obvious home run hires that we won't get).

Wolfpack Club donations/memberships would decrease 50% immediately if he was hired

Why? Why is that so outrageous to get a coach for 5 years before he retires?

He's not with those guys in terms of success, but they are approximately the same age, which was my point. And he is a proven program builder.

I'd rather have Smart, Miller, Stevens, and any number of coaches. But if the A-List is actually passed us by (have no clue if it has), then why not get a guy like this.

And hey, at least I'm attempting to discuss the coaching search, rather than the thousand same old jokes or pictures...

Holy fuck, we're arguing about Steve Fisher's age? How about the fact that Michigan had to vacate something like 5 seasons worth of wins under him? We should really start banning people for stupidity.

Fisher wouldn't be high on my list, but we could do a lot worse. Sure he's old, but if you watched the Fab Five documentary that JUST came out, the guy looked with it, animated etc. He had a tough time to end his stay at Michigan, but ultimately was fired for problems beyond his control (didn't know his players were accepting money). He probably learned some valuable compliance lessons that can help us avoid pulling a UNC-Cheat.

ok ok, back to the jokes now.

The money funneling into UM back then was from a single booster whose ties to the program predated steve fisher.

he's been clean as a whistle at SD St. for more than 10 years, I don't think that should be a concern.

The age probably is though.

I dunno, if he wanted to come here, I wouldn't say no if other candidates weren't going to work out.

If we are going after a coach with questionable NCAA history, then the obvious choice is Pearl NOT Fisher.

^ disagree, Pearl knowingly LIED to the NCAA. And he'd come with rules/instructions from the NCAA if I'm not mistaken.

From ESPN Insider Rumors:

Quote :
"If not Smart at NC State, then who?
8:52
AM ETNorth Carolina State Wolfpack TopEmailComments9UPDATE: Most talk these days in regards to the NC State coaching search tends to center around VCU's Shaka Smart, but what if Smart turns the Wolfpack down? Where will they turn next?

Seth Davis of CBSSports.com could have answered that question yesterday when he tweeted: "Why hasn't NC State named a coach yet? Could it be because top candidates (Shaka Smart, Gregg Marshall, Anthony Grant) are still coaching?"

Wichita State's Marshall and Alabama's Grant both have ties to the southeast, which only improves their candidacy for the job. But there's also another name that has surfaced over the past week or so, and that's Cincinnati's Mick Cronin. Some reports indicate that NC State has already contacted Cronin, and that the Bearcats' coach would be willing to listen to an attractive offer. Cronin has steadily improved Cincinnati's record in each of his five seasons at the school, and could emerge as one of the leading candidates for the job in Raleigh.

---

According to David Glenn of the ACC Sports Journal, VCU's Shaka Smart is NC State's main target for its next men's basketball coach.

No big surprise or anything, but there have been plenty of other names out there in recent weeks. Some as far-fetched as Florida's Billy Donovan.

As for Smart, there's no question that VCU will do what it can to keep him around. His record (55-20) in two years at the university speaks for itself. Whether VCU can afford him and compete with bigger programs with deeper pockets, is truly the question.

"We certainly are aware that Shaka is a hot commodity, and a fantastic basketball coach, and we're working hard right now to improve and upgrade the nature of his relationship with VCU, financially and otherwise," VCU athletic director Norwood Teague told the ACC Sports Journal on Tuesday. "We also understand that someone out there could offer him $4 million a year, and that's something we can't do."

Would NC State go that high to get Smart? Or perhaps spend less than half that to settle on someone like Wichita State's Gregg Marshall? We'll have to wait and see.

"

One thing I am still unclear on that Gold in Ovies in particular keep making a big deal of: I get the semantic difference between a coach turning down an official offer versus saying they're not interested when the search firm puts out feelers, but I don't see how the latter is better than the former. In either case, they ain't coming to State. Am I missing something?

Not really that difficult to imagine seeing that it's been that way for the better part of the last 20 years. We've been better than Wake about once every 5 or 6 years since I've been alive.

@pants AG and JO are trying to call out DY to have her make a statement RE: you said if someone said they got an offer and it wasn't true you would come out and say it"
So state fans are saying Debbie doesn't have to say JACK b/c no "Offer" was made
To which they respond to a college coach feelers = offer...

Obviously the end result is the same, but if I'm an AD, I am putting out feelers to damn near every successful coach. You don't know what kind of priorities coaches have so it doesn't hurt to ask. That doesn't mean an offer is made, just that if they were interested, I'd be happy to interview them.

Then, when 99% of them say they are fine where they are at, it's not really a public rejection ala Calipari, Barnes and Beilein like last time around. We never offered, and they didn't ever say they were interested. Less messy.

aside from the jokes, one other thing i want to bring up is that all these guys that we contact, may not necessarily be candidates themselves.

our former head of Corp Dev was a lineman at Carolina, then played for the Pats when they lost to the Bears in the SB. i happened to be in a conversation with him and one of NC State's all time receiving leaders one random afternoon. according to them when we were looking for an FB coach we talked to Cowher not as a potential candidate, but for advice. he said Cowher stays connected to this area out of general interest & his out of the blue (no pun intended) hires of guys like Jeff Reed, Willie Parker, and even Dantonio Burnette for a short stint, pointed to those connections. Apparently Cowher was pointing us towards some candidates at the time. Along the same lines, Spurrier was spotted on Duke's campus the last time they were looking for a coach - he wasn't a candidate, but they consulted him for his opinion on other candidates.

we very well may have been in touch with Donovan, but probably because we were doing our diligence on Smart, as Smart worked a year for him.
