Honestly Kiwi, you don't even get it. It isn't that your photos are ALWAYS terrible. It is very clear that you've made tons of progress since you started posting in this thread, and I won't even try to take that away from you. However, when you keep doing dumb shit that does nothing but detract from any merit you may have as a potential "real" photographer instead of an enthusiastic picture-taker, it gets frustrating. You're the one with the elitist attitude in a thread where you remain out of your league in terms of knowledge and experience. My posts aside, since I'm sure you and a few others whose feelings I've hurt disregard them, there is a lot of experience in this thread who have continually tried to help you and you continue to think you know better.

Do you have a frame and fabric reflector or a collapsible? Collapsible are the much cheaper and convenient option, but I think using them on a stand outdoors is a bit suspect.

I REALLY REALLY want to purchase a 42in 5in1 reflector though.

I have the 42" 5in1 reflector, the generic one from adorama. First thing I got before i got strobes. Does wonders. I mainly use that and foamcore to reflect light where I need to. I need to order some umbrella's. I had a pair of them last year but they "blew away" and broke. lol. Haven't replaced them yet.

One of my resolutions for the new year, which isn't exactly a resolution as much as it is excitement over having new toys to play with, is to take my camera with me almost everywhere (including work) and shoot as much as I can. I'm not going to do anything lame and join one of those "take a photo a day for a year" groups on Flickr or anything, but I'm trying to shoot as much as possible, even if it isn't of anything spectacular.

Let's make a new rule where every shot needs to also show the sspeed, aperture, focal length, and any other info on how it was shot like tripod or not, etc. I know most have embedded EXIF data, but ts a pain to save and view every picture. I'd be REAALLL interested in this, TWW, appease me.

Does Flickr remove EXIF data?

For some of these shots they are so chopped up or have used so many different techniques (HDR or whatever) that having the original info might not help that much. Personally I have a lot of respect for those who take amazing shots without photoshop.

You know what'd be sweet? Is there a way you can create like a histogram of focal lengths in Adobe LR, etc for your entire collection or per folder, etc. Then you if you can see where you like to shoot. Good info for buying a new prime thats in the range of yoru zoom or something.

I need a new wider/normal lense. a fast 50mm is tempting, but i'm almost thinking thats too tight. Maybe a 35mm?

50 on full frame is nice... but for a crop body, I'd say 35 too. I still don't use my 50 1.4 on my 1D much cause it just feels too tight for normal use. When I had the 5D, it was perfect.

^^one of our instructors at school yesterday showed us some photo illustrations of a master print artist/photographer who did some crazy masking jobs with film. The pics look fairly simple to do in photoshop, but this was in the 70's and it's really quite remarkable. I want to learn how shit like that got done before the age of computers and photoshop. It was hard for me to even realize this world before I got to school.

God damn, crazy shit. I'm gonna try to learn how to do split processing and masking in the dark room. Then we learn color processing in a few weeks. Those enlargers look scary hard.

Yeah, I don't use photoshop for much. When I worked at the paper I learned color correction and prep-for-print stuff, but I really don't know too much more than that. Some slight levels adjustments in curves and maybe a +5 on the contrast is usually the extent of it.

^Yes. If you don't know what you're doing and don't know how to use ALL of the manual functions on a camera, then absolutely yes. You'll waste a shitload of money developing poorly exposed images, as opposed to being able to look at it on your monitor and say "oh shit, I need to use a different shutter speed/aperture/film speed."

Also, old film cameras don't have on board light meters, and if they do they are pretty inaccurate.

I was going to add that the benefit of film is that it does make you more discriminating with your shot selection. But no amount of light meters or modern (entry-level kits lens lol) technology can help stupid. For someone inexperienced with proper exposure, a dslr would help because you'd be inclined to shoot more, you'd be able to make appropriate adjustments on the fly, etc.

Once you learn the basics and how to handle a camera, then film is a more logical choice.

and when i got my first one, it was just kinda natural...

Shit, open up your kit lens as much as possible (likely f/3.5), pop that on-board flash up, put it on aperture priority (since no self-respecting person would ever be caught using green square, even if they probably should be) and you're ready for a Pulitzer.

for those of you who want to peek at EXIF data and also use firefox:

the extension puts any EXIF data that is embedded in firefox's right click menu. that is, right click and hit properties, and you'll see it if it's there. on this page JBAZ has them but ronny does not.

I've been wondering that too. It seems to me that 90% of the flikr-posted photos on here don't have EXIF data in them, but there's always the rare exception. All my photos should have EXIF in them, if anybody's interested.

It appears that when flickr grabs the exif data for its own pages from your uploaded picture, it doesn't copy it over to the resized versions of the picture that it creates. so the exif data dead ends on the flickr page.

I suppose this is a way to "add value" to flickr rather than just use it for hosting.

edit: ^yeah, only on the original size picture, which is only for pro accounts that let you look at all sizes.

I'd go to Peace camera's and look at their stock of film camera's. I'm sure you can pick some up for uber cheap, like $20 for an old canon ae-1's. I have one, but never used it. I might when we start to pick up small format in the summer. That's after we play with the large format's. $100 for 50 shots b&w ISO 100...
