I have never seen that from any coach on any level (even though i'm not as familiar with soccer coach speak). I would have expected something like, "we will do our best and see what happens", "you never know" or, "if we play absolutely perfect, we could win, bu tthat is very unlikely"

As a coach, you enter with that attitude, you might as well not even show up.

imagine if that coach told his team they had no chance of winning. history would be completely different. Not only had the US not had a history of winning, the soviet union had won almost every competition including 10-3 over the US in exhibition.

Our current odds in FIFA are much greater than those.

We just came off a 12 or 13 game winning streak and we're already qualified for the WC which is another 9 months away. The team's confidence is already pretty high, it can afford to be knocked down a peg or two. Compare that to where we were in 2006 when we absolutely got our shit run out of Germany because we thought we were hot shit.

I don't have a problem with this. If we make it to the QF, that's when he can start throwing out the "maybe..." line. But until we at least see the groups and make a determination of our chances based on that then we need to keep the media and the hype to a minimum so the players can go in there as the underdogs. That's the only storyline that is going to offer us any chance at success and he's setting it up for that.

I feel like Dempsey is a completely different player since his move to MLS because he went so long without playing, got hurt, and has been out of form when he has played so the MLS version of Clint Dempsey is a fringe player, imo.

that was not even elating. im glad we won but that was just sad to make those people so happy then take it right away in 1 minute. imagine being a player and the feeling of breaking an entire nations heart right there just like that even though you had absolutely no incentive to. probably enjoyable but would have been cool if it was a bigger plus for us.
