There is a free app but it requires root access. 1/14/2011 12:57:12 PM |

there's also a patch that piggybacks on the existing verizon app to give you a free hotspot (also requires root). supposed to be comparable speed to the official one, but i haven't tried it

what's the deal with root access? good idea? bad idea? do you have to know what you are doing? does it void warranties and cause shit to break or what? 1/14/2011 1:39:52 PM |
BigEgo Not suspended 24374 Posts user info edit post |
Technically it voids your warranty, and if you do anything with it you have to not be stupid (don't delete unless you know you don't need it etc.), but of course 99% of the time you can just flash back stock and no one will ever know the difference. 1/14/2011 1:56:28 PM |

I have horrible horrible horrible battery life on my droid x. I've made sure that sync is not frequent, wifi/gps are off, etc but I can't last more than 5 hours.
Oh, this phone is just over 2 weeks old so I've been through many full cycles of run down to nothing -> full charge. Ideas? I'm thinking of complaining to verizon (not like itll help) 1/14/2011 2:37:24 PM |

Is your signal crap? That's about the only other thing it could be other than a bad battery. Go into About Phone-Battery Use-Cell Standby and look at how long it says without signal. If you you have access to wifi, USE IT. Battery life is considerably better over wifi, just be sure to turn it off when you're going away so it isn't constantly scanning for hot spots when there isn't any around. 1/14/2011 2:40:09 PM |

rooting is really one of the easiest things you can do, and you can also unroot with the click of a button. i would definitely read up on bootstrap, as that allows you to make a copy of your stock setup (and any other custom setup), in the event that something goes terribly wrong. android is open source, so rooting just lets you take advantage of it's capabilities.1/15/2011 1:46:39 PM |

i've had my evo for less than 30 days and I am thinking about returning it and getting the new evo shift. the price is exactly the same and the return policy says you have 30 days to return with no penalty. anyone have experience returning phones like this? is there a catch or something i should know about? 1/16/2011 7:33:36 PM |

I got sick of Android on my HD2 and installed Windows Phone 7. I really can't believe how much faster and more intuitive WP7 is. I can always partition my SD card and reinstall Android to dual-boot, but at this point I'm quite content to stick with WP7 only.
If anyone else is rocking Android on the HD2, I would highly recommend giving WP7 a try. I had major connectivity, battery life, contact import and freezing issues with various different versions (2.1, 2.2, 2.3) of Android installed on my SD card and NAND. Now with just the first WP7 port released only a few days ago, the build is incredibly stable, everything works flawlessly and the battery life is much better than I got on any version of Android.

i never thought i'd be able to get by without a physical keyboard, but the virtual keyboard on the x is quickly growing on me. i can actually type faster (without swype) just because you don't have the lag time from pressing/depressing a physical key. 1/17/2011 1:54:43 PM |

In droids? Well only the droid 2 global has a sim card. Androids in general? Just requires, like any other phone, that your phone be unlocked, GSM, and capable of operating on the bands of the carrier whose sim you're going to use.1/19/2011 3:24:26 PM |

I guess specifically, if I got a Droid with Verizon and I wanted to be able to go out of the country and swap in a SIM card from that country, the only Droid that would do that would be the Droid 2 Global? 1/19/2011 3:39:06 PM |

The Droid 2 Global will allow you to use SIM cards overseas. You need to make sure and get it unlocked locally first however. To do it legally, you can just call Verizon, and if your account is in good standing for six months, they'll give you an unlock code. 1/19/2011 4:58:25 PM |

http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-vibrant-start-getting-froyo-jan-21-tomorrow
Quote : | "Yeah, you read that right. The Samsung Vibrant is finally getting Froyo. Just like Samsung promised, lo those many months ago. T-Mobile CMO Cole Broadman confirmed to PCMag that the Android 2.2 update will start pushing out on Jan. 21. And as usually is the case, not everybody's going to get the update at the onset, but it'll keep pushing for a few weeks.
Broadman told PCMag that the wait for Froyo was a technical issue -- and not any of the rumored reasons, such as not wanting to canibalize from another phone, or because of supposed payments.
So hang tight, folks. It's coming. It's really coming." |
