i don't understand the gregg marshall hate. sure his ncaa record blows but it was at winthrop, a school that had never been to the ncaa tournament before he got there. 7 of winthrop's 9 ncaa appearances were under marshall and he's responsible for the schools only ncaa win.

it seems like he walked into a hard situation at wichita state. "But within a month of each other, WSU recruit Guy Alang-Ntang collapsed and died during a pickup game -- right in front of Marshall's eyes -- and DeAndre Adams, one of his key role players at Winthrop, died as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident." he finished 9th in the conference that year

http://www.midmajority.com/p/638

the following year 5th, 2nd after that, and 2nd this year. his team just beat alabama by 9 to win the NIT. in the NIT, his team beat nebraska by 27, virginia tech by 3, college of charleston by 7, and washington state by 31.

wichita state is currently ranked 28 in the pomeroy (highest rated team not in the NCAAs)

his worst loss this year was to san diego state by 14, uconn by 4, and vcu by 1.

his team was 80 in ppg, 52nd in rebounding, 42nd in assists, and 43rd in field goal percentage.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/team/_/id/2724/wichita-state-shockers

he's not my number 1, but the man can coach.

^yea, i don't think a lot of people understand that Winthrop is a low major, not a mid major. Their conference champ this year (Asheville) was in the play in game. Low major's are usually ranked 14-16 and rarely ever win.

Not wanting marshall doesnt have a thing to do with donovan or any other pipe dream that has been mentioned in this thread.

Marshall is near last on my list and hopefully he is last on Yow's list too, unless her aspiration is for us to win the NIT.

It takes a good coach to win games with less talent. Compared to our unknown last hire, any coach with a record of winning on the collegiate level is fine with me.

or a message board post or anything? it seems like everyone assumes he is an asshole/has personality issues/has baggage just because he hasn't gotten a high major job. it seems like it might be one of those things that has been repeated so much it's now considered fact.

At the risk of repeating myself, Marshall is not good because he can't win big and he can't recruit big. Has nothing to do with his personality, ridiculous Donovan rumors, or 2 Gs in his name.

He just has a long record of not doing anything big. Who gives a fucking shit if some people think he is doing well in a bad situation? That's a low standard. He should have moved on by now. Other people in bad situations do greater things on the recruiting trail and NCAA tournaments. If Marshall has ever "overachieved," it has been on a small scale.

Marshall is a good manager of a single McDonald's restaurant. You don't hire him to run the whole corporation.

And in any case, we are a lock for Smart if we want him.

I'd take Dick Vitale if it weren't for the fact he'd just stand on the side line and drool at coach K every time we played Duke.

What makes you say that? Why would he be so ready to move into a position where people turn on him if he doesn't produce? I mean, I'm sure he has heard about how our fans have treated Herb.

i don't understand what kind of results one is supposed to get coming out of a conference consisting of these schools.

Big South
Charleston Southern
Coastal Carolina
Gardner-Webb
High Point
Liberty
North Carolina-Asheville
Presbyterian
Radford
Virginia Military
Winthrop

it seems like he has witchita state on an upward trajectory and he beat some solid teams en route to an NIT championship. his team was solid statistically, didn't have any bad losses, and was the highest rated team according to the pomeroy not in the tournament (28)

i don't understand why people think wichita state was such a shithole before he got there. turgeon got them some pretty good national press, so while there may have been some depth issues that first year, recruiting shouldn't have been too hard.

if we hire marshall, we will be having another one of these threads in 4-5 years when we still haven't done jack shit and can't beat UNC or Duke. we should just hire Purnell and win the NCAA tournament.

the year turgeon left the team went 17–14, 8–10, and finished 6th in the conference. add the death of two players and you're fighting an uphill battle.

9th place year 1 no post season
5th place year 2 cbi 2nd round
2nd year 3 NIT 1st round
2nd this year NIT champs

Marshall may be a good in-game coach, but he has no experience to indicate that he can run a high-major program (and recruit the caliber of players that you need at that level).

I mean, with a guy a like Shaka Smart, you can at least point to his experience at Clemson and Florida and say that he's been around that kind of stuff, seen how guys like Billy Donovan run a program, and participated in recruiting at that level.

doesn't explain why he can't recruit worth a shit.

WSU was one of the most recognizable mid-majors when he got the job, probably 2nd to gonzaga. he should have been able to recruit pretty easily, but that did not happen.

dude needs to learn how to recruit from billy donovan or something.

A 13-year track record is better experience than 2 years as a head and 1 year as an assistant at UF and 2 at Clemson. He was a major assistant for all of 3 years.

[Edited on March 31, 2011 at 10:17 PM. Reason : lol at Justin. Wichita was so awesome Turgeon made the NCAAs once in seven years!]

Yeah, I'd say making it to the ACC Championship game is at least equivalent to winning the NIT and even Sid was able to do that.

Dude it's Wichita State and they had a S16. Doesn't mean a flood of 4 and 5 stars were gonna be lining up to go to school there. Marshall recruited well enough to improve year after year and all those "nobodies" on the team would've beaten the ever-loving shit out of our team this year. Honestly, he would be a solid hire and would get some serious effort out of our players. I'm hoping we get him...

Even the guy who's status is fuck Shaka hates Marshall.

I would love to hear how winning 29 games at a mid-major is mediocre.

You guys need to see it because there's a good chance he's going to be our coach.

Plus the man supposedly wants the job. That tells me he will do all he can to succeed.

Winning the NIT is way more impressive than anything we've done in like... 20 years. And to do it with lesser talent, beating teams that would have (and in the case of VT, did) whooped our ass this year...

Marshall can't help his team had nearly an identical resume from an arguably better conference and couldn't get in the NCAA tournament. VCU was literally one of the four teams to get in because of the new format. If Shaka won the NIT, wouldn't you acknowledge that was an accomplishment for a mid-major?
