I'm happy with our ranking, it's pretty much where I thought it would be. I think we have the potential to move up a few more this week. I just hope we don't choke at college park but if an awful FSU can beat them, maybe they were over-hyped.

Vandy seems like a good guy but he was never going to play at all in the ACC. I'm sure he's enjoying being a bball player at a big time school but he should have played in a conference like the WCC. Could have joined the Aussie Train at St Mary's.

I feel like if he had four years of actual good coaching from a collegiate coach who knew how to get some effort out of him he would be serviceable.

I love Vandy, he's done a good job playing interior D for us some. His mere presence causes people to change the way they shoot on the inside. If only he was better at getting the rebounds after...

i don't understand why you keep defending face, after you just proclaimed him to be a troll a few days ago.

i'm not defending face right now, i'm defending numbers.

face rolls in w/ kenpom in his back pocket and posts (true) information in a way that gets people stirred up. most of what he says is a truth extrapolated out into the future. if you're able to ignore his trolling just a little bit, most of his posts are useful just b/c they have information that's normally behind a paywall. you don't have to agree w/ his (kenpom's) prediction if you don't think that we've performed to our full potential yet, but that doesn't make the projection any less valid, it just makes it fully quantitative. okay so that's how face operates, just so everyone knows.

the reason for making that comment just now is b/c tt10, regardless of what sport we're talking about, consistently just dismisses any numbers if they don't agree w/ his observations from watching one team play. it's pretty obvious that kenpom is useful, especially if you don't watch every single game in college basketball. it's the equivalent of getting excited when the weather report is wrong. no one is rooting for rain, they're just using computers to do the best job they can. it's the same here, ken pomeroy isn't an anti-state person that's keeping us down for no reason, this is the best system that he's come up with (and as far as i know the best public system anywhere) and he posts the results. you can't take them personally, and you can't take them as fact. you can dismiss them completely if you like, but that's the definition of ignorance.

Here's the thing though, teams change over the course of the season.

Just using our club as an example, there's absolutely no way that there are 29 teams better than the Wolfpack TODAY. This team is playing much better than November. Lorenzo is playing at a much higher level, we're rebounding better, and playing much better defense overall.

Kenpom is still holding that first ~3-4 weeks of the season against us because we didn't come out like gangbusters on one end of the floor. It can't account for a maturation of a team over the course of the season.

That's my big problem with kenpom. Just my opinion though.

why yes, I am going to quote myself from another thread since this is a better thread for it:

Quote :
"not hard to understand that as the season goes on, more data is available to use as a forecast

it's the Nate Silver model. of course it's not the end all be all, but just a prediction based on available data"

and it's not hard to see that face uses this forecast as fact (that's where the trolling comes in) and TT10 chooses the complete opposite side to try and make his point (that's where his trolling comes in)

both are equally as bad and gets nobody anywhere

the answer is somewhere in the middle and on neither side of the extreme

I just want to comment that the Nate Silver model is actually much better than Kenpom due to how to it phases out polling data over time and values recent events more heavily than past ones.

I wasn't implying that it's the exact same model

just that it's in the same line of thinking as fivethirtyeight in the sense that it's fluid and changes as more and more data becomes available

and simonn, just because i actually use the eye test to factor into my sports opinions, i put lots of value into stats, so i dont see where this myth that i dismiss any stats comes from

but when we win our 7th game in a row and face says things like "The season is really unravelling quickly" how can anyone with a brain take that statement seriously?

you're going to need to find more than one stat for one team that you think is wrong.

although if i'm being honest i have no idea how kenpom performs historically. i'd be interested to know.

the stats are valuable independent of the projections, though.

^ uhm... no one w/ a brain does take that statement seriously. you see what i mean?

or stating that "we're officially a bubble team" after we win our 8th game in a row and have a top 15 rpi as well as a 2-2 record against top 50 rpi teams

The funny thing is that no matter how this season ends for us, the stats guys will claim preeminence. If we lose in the round of 32 to some mid major that hits 20 3s, they'll be like "See! We told you NC State's defense was shit". Or we could make a final four run while averaging 90 points a game and they'll say "See! We told you NC State had a championship caliber offense!".

UConn 2011 is really the only outlier in the last 6-7 years. most championship teams were in his top 10 most of the year, and the majority of them were top 10 in both offensive and defensive efficiency ratings.

his model has been pretty damn good

UConn was 10 in his final run in 2011 so not even a huge outlier.

frankly, I'm surprised that we have a college basketball season to discuss at all....but the inevitable world financial collapse was delayed just long enough for us to enjoy this wolfpack run and give us a bit more oh so precious time to hoard more gold.

ESPN Bracketology is refreshed. We are still a 4 seed. Duke is no longer expected to win the ACC... Miami is...

Where do you see him picking Miami to win the ACC? If Miami wins the ACC they arent getting a 6 seed while we get a 4 and Duke gets a 1.

Here's the main point that I feel that all of you posting about this rating and that ranking are missing.

How previous games have gone in no way determines how we're going to play the next one.

A coin comes up heads 10 times in a row, there is still only a 50% chance you can get heads again.

Clearly our chances of winning most games should be better than 50/50 since we have a good team, but you folks have full out arguments just because some person who has 0 effect on the outcome of the game says we are better or worse than others.

Who cares? Just watch the games and be excited for the W.
