it's not that they're long, it's that it's the same post every time and it could be said in so fewer words.

^^ I HAVE said so in fewer words. Yet the same shit keeps getting recycled every few pages. I've gotten better about just ignoring it, but this weekend I finally had enough and exploded with back to back rants. And yes they were both "adderall-induced."

Fine. The evening class I teach at my church was canceled, so here's the cliff notes version:

The "State has talent, we should be winning more, Lowe's coaching is to blame" argument is crap. State's got a subpar backcourt (Gonzalez, Degand, and Mays at PG, plus Ferguson and Fells at SG) from both a talent/experience perspective. State's been solid in the post, but lacks a big man to consistently draw the defenses. They're also lacking a true dead-eye 3-pt shooter. Yes State has talent, but that doesn't mean State has the right pieces to ensure success.

Sidney Lowe's "struggle to develop talent" has been at least part myth. The reality is that Lowe hasn't brought in any talented PG/SG recruits. Key injuries to Atsur and Degand have made life difficult for Lowe in the 1st two years. However, I've expected more progression in Fells and Costner. Time will tell whether Lowe or the individual players deserve the blame for this.

Lowe learned a painful lesson last year when he brought in JJ Hickson. The team clearly disintegrated down the stretch b/c Lowe failed to "manage egos." I expected that problem to be corrected this year, and it appears it has. Possibly in part to Lowe seeking advice during the offseason, which is encouraging to hear: http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/fowler-lowe-sought-offseason-advice

I'm optimistic primarily b/c of the upgrade in recruitment. Lowe's bringing in a quality cast this year, and already has a 5-star commitment next year. If we're going to compete with Duke and UNC, we need to be able to land quality recruits, and Sidney is doing just that.

I've also never bought into the "bad coaching" argument either. Lowe's bringing in PGS that will eventually run the offense on the floor, instead of taking directions from the bench. He's also shown a knack for using a wide variety of defenses to shutdown down specific opponents. If he truly can't coach, then State will struggle in the next two years despite the influx of superior talent. But that means waiting to pass judgment.

State was predicted to finish in the bottom 1/3. I figured that, if they could get to 7 wins and avoid early knockouts in the ACC tourney and NIT, that'd be a pretty good showing. Hell, it's really the same way I look at State football this past year. A lot of you took shots at TOB during the 1st half of the season. Others (including me) told you to wait and see. Now the team is poised to take a big leap this year. I'm not saying the same will happen in bball, but positive signs are there.

There, that's as short as I could get it.

One thing that I can't understand is how many damn turnovers we commit. You would think that an ex point guard would have a team that wouldn't give the ball away 20 times a game. At times it's hard to watch. Also, I don't want to hear the thing that it is because of the incosistency in who starts at pg. Javi has played with these guys for two years now. Stop turning the damn ball over.

I think the bigs had the majority of the TOs

10 of the 16 were from the costner, fells and horner

I'm not blaming it on only the pgs. The entire team turns the ball over too much. If Sidney can figure out a way for us to stop turning the ball over so much, we could be a good team. I guess we will find out next year when we are mostly playing with his recruits. For now he is still credible.

I think it has more to do with some of our players are inherently careless with the ball (i.e. butterfingers)

Smith had waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more touches than any of our other players sans pg and he didnt turn it over once. Plus he is constantly surrounded by people

Costner is lazy = TOs
Fells has a low bball IQ = TOs

Team came out unprepared and lazy. Lowe failed miserably as a coach tonight.

Maryland has only 1 player. But they played hard and hustled. That's why they won.

Still not credible.

Is it consider inappropriate to kick a player off for sucking? Like, if a coach does that, are they admitting that they are a bad coach? Have they broken the sacred coach-player trust?

Cause there's one player that needs to sit, but if he didn't get minutes, he'd probably act like a bitch and bring the team down...so...does he just get to fuck up for four years while we have to watch? Or can somebody cut his ass? Like put him on an academic scholarship or something?

Lowe in the postgame talks about how a lot of the strategy was to punch it inside and kick it out, a lot of it had to do with key players with lackadasical passes, AWFUL unforced turnovers, and not even attempting to get the ball inside

Costner's grandfather's funeral was yesterday, that probably contributes to his absent performance

the question of Mays is still out there though on Sid

Benching Costner was a disgrace. Costner made you Sidney, you did not make him.

I've got nothing for last night. State looked out of sync and downright lazy. I thought the team was getting past these stupid TO's, especially after only having 8 at wF, but holy cow. It looked like a flashback to earlier in the season.

I'll give Lowe some leeway in a lot of areas, but effort is not one of them. Maryland wanted this one more, and we helped with too many boneheaded decisions. If Lowe expects to stick around then this shit needs to stop.

Next two games just became "make or break" games. Lose one of the next two, and Lowe's going to take some serious fire in the offseason (baring a good run in the ACC tourney).

if we win 1 of our next 3 games are we a lock for the NIT? (16-14)

I guess it could depend on who we draw in the 1st round of the ACCT.

^In the grand scheme of things, it's just a game

But yeah, the season has been frustrating. But did anybody realistically expect us to make the tournament this year? Especially after last season, and how this season started off?

I disagree. Maybe on message boards, but he isn't in any danger. No one had any real expectations this year and no one will next year unless we land Wall and Cousins. That said, 2 years from now will be Lowe's make or break year. If we don't make the tournament it will be hard to find a soul who will back him...

I've mostly defended Sid this season, but it really shouldn't take a coach 5 season to get a program that wasn't completely in the shitter to get back to the tourney...look at what Darrin Horn did at South Carolina in his first year (after two straight losing seasons under Odom) or numerous other examples.

After last year?? No.

But two years ago after we had that strong 2nd half of the season, I thought that two years from that point with McCauley, Fells, Costner, and the others players that I thought Sidney could develop/recruit/coach...I definitely thought we should be in the tournament.

Last year definitely tempered my expectations about this year. I have no idea what to expect next year. I don't foresee us making the tournament unless one or two of our recruits completely surprises us. And the year after is another question mark...definitely depends on whether or not we can land one of the big names we have on our list.

That is part of the problem. We are a program that should be expecting to compete and make the NCAAs. We have improved some this year but Sid still has a long way to go. If next year we don't show much improvement, I think he has to take some heat.

We probably would have the lost the game anyway, but I was really disappointed with Lowe's management of the last minute and a half or so of the MD game. You could definitely tell who better coach was in that situation. Maryland got open shots on all their possessions down the stretch while we were basically hoisting up prayers. On defense, I don't think he made the right decision as far as fouling. I think you always want to extend the game as much as possible in that situation. In any case, MD is tough to beat when Vasquez plays well, but I wish we would have shown up with a better effort for such a big game. Very disappointing. I hope we can still end the season on a high note.

free post. TO 100!!

actually, i'll add a little. i wasn't too impressed with clock management and our offense down the stretch of the maryland game. we didn't have much chance to score because we were passing around the perimeter too much. i'm pretty sure most of that was due to tough defense, though. i didn't really see ben/tracy getting open.
