I'm interested in the Droid X but I'd much rather have a smartphone with a keyboard

wait does the Droid X have a slideout keyboard?

Droid pro is more blackberry-esque. Small touchscreen with a portrait keyboard (no slide). Droid 2 has slideout landscape keyboard.

sounds to me like i'd rather have the Global, based on the keyboard, when it seems the only real advantages the X has over the Global is a better camera and more default memory?

i definitely like the larger screen size of the Global/X but I'd much rather have a 'real' keyboard with the option to use the touchscreen instead of having to use the touchscreen

Quote :
"What’s It To You?
If Oracle were to win this suit at trial, almost every application for Android would become an infringing piece of software. This isn’t the sort of thing that makes developers or manufacturers feel secure about the Android platform. Google would likely be forced to pay a hefty sum for lost profits to Oracle, and handset manufacturers would probably start having to pay licensing fees (essentially, a royalty), whether to Google as an Android licensing fee or directly to Oracle, since that’s where it would end up anyways. Google would also become subject to using that software under Oracle’s licensing terms.
This means higher phone prices, and might scare manufacturers into spending more time with alternative mobile operating systems. Developers would probably also have to comply with an Oracle licensing agreement.
We’re still rooting for Google here, but this lawsuit could be very bad for Android."

"Copied code not in Android source after all
Posted on Friday, Jan 21, 2011 by Jerry Hildenbrand

You might have stumbled across a story or two on the web today about Florian Mueller from FOSSpatents finding 43 more files in the Android source that look to be copied from Sun. I know I did, and had a heart wrenching editorial all ready to go, all about Google's open source strategy in their fight against Oracle, how it might fail, and how I was going to shave my beard and cry.

Then I stumbled across Ed Burnette's story on ZDNet.

All the fuss, all the hysteria, and most importantly all the cries against Google proclaiming them as thieves aren't what they seem. There are two sets of files in question -- a series of seven (PolicyNodeImpl.java, AclEntryImpl.java, AclImpl.java, GroupImpl.java, OwnerImpl.java, PermissionImpl.java, and PrincipalImpl.java) that contain proprietary code from Sun, and do exist, but they are in the unit test area of the AOSP source tree. This means they are only used to test software after it's built, and before it's shipped. To be clear -- these files are not used to build Android, nor are the shipped with Android. To take things a step further, these files were published by Sun on their own website to assist developers to test and debug -- exactly what Google is using them for.

The other 37 files exist as well, but are inside a zip file in an area of the source tree used for one particular audio chipset. These files look like they were uploaded by mistake, and also aren't used to build Android or ship with any Android devices. These will probably just be deleted from the tree, as they don't do anything.

One more anti-Android story proven false and put out to pasture. Let's get ready for the next one, because everyone wants to see some of those beautiful, green Android dollars."

just an FYI:

RemoteDroid is pretty cool - turns your device into a PC remote.

requires server app on pc and app on device with wifi on

very functional and responsive, though sometimes hangs up.

isn't fully integrated with swype keyboard though (I read that the dev is working on it). but I mainly use it for controlling music and not typing, so no biggie to me.

Quote :
"Out of all the upcoming Android phones, I see the Motorola Atrix 4G as the most exciting device because of its innovative docks which allow it to transform into a desktop or laptop computer. No pricing details have been announced, but a Best Buy employee is reporting that an AT&T representative told him the laptop dock should retail for around $150.

Current entry-level netbooks with similar sized screens go for around $250 online, so the $150 price sounds believable. The Atrix 4G laptop dock comprises of only a battery, 11.6 inch display, speakers, and keyboard so that should help reduce its overall price.

If you were already planning on getting the Atrix 4G, what are the chances you spring for the laptop dock too? Do you think the rumored price of $150 is a fair value for a smartphone accessory that delivers a laptop-like experience?"

My Samsung Fascinate stopped emailing pictures on my phone to my email address. I hate texting it because it resizes it. WTF. I have an unlimited data plan, and even when I'm on a wifi network it I still never get said e-mail with the attachments I sent. My phone says message sent, but my inbox never receives.

I deleted my accounts and I can add a google account. However, my account will not sync... hmmm. One guy was able to get his working by mounting it via usb to a computer. This does not work for me...

meh. I decided to just start uploading my photos via Picasa and just save them when I get home.

But that still doesn't resolve the issue I can't check/send e-mail from my phone anymore.

So what are people's impressions of the HTC Thunderbolt? It is supposed to be available on Verizon the same week as I am eligible for an upgrade. Is it fate?

Or is there something better I should wait for? I dont know if I can wait to see if apple announces a 4g Iphone; I am currently using an old BB 8830.

Verizon had to divest a number of alltel markets to other companies (so as not to create a monopoly) there are places that still sell alltel hardware just not many.

hickory is one of those places. piddlebug has a plan from there and can't do anything verizon because of it. It sucks! But her contract is up in march, and we will be changing things up then, either getting her over to sprint with me, or over to verizon (which ever has the better phones and better deals at the time)

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2011/01/25/verizon-iphone-30-unlimited-data/

Quote :
"Verizon iPhone: $30 Unlimited Data (for Now)
By Roger Cheng

It’s official: Verizon is going to offer iPhone buyers a $30 unlimited data plan. The carrier’s heir apparent and chief operating officer, Lowell McAdam, told us the news ahead of the company’s meeting with investors.

Associated Press
“I’m not going to shoot myself in the foot,” he said. Not offering an unlimited plan would put up a barrier for customers who might otherwise switch from AT&T, he said. The country’s No. 2 carrier still has millions of subscribers grandfathered into unlimited plans they signed up for before AT&T switched to tiered pricing last summer.

Mr. McAdam certainly doesn’t want to miss out on any sales now. Anticipation Verizon would soon offer the iPhone held back sales over the fourth quarter, he said. Analysts seemed happy with the subscriber growth, but McAdam wasn’t. “It wasn’t what I hoped it would be,” he said.

Update: But you’d better act fast. Speaking later Tuesday morning, Mr. McAdam said the iPhone unlimited plan will be a temporary offer and that the carrier will follow AT&T’s move to tiered pricing in the not too distant future."

Keep in mind it has the 45nm processor compared to the 65nm processor in the EVO, so it should be faster and more battery efficient

I'm looking to buy a new microsd card. prefer it to be at least class 4 and at least 16 GB.

Found this: http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-microSDHC-Class-Memory-TS16GUSDHC6E/dp/B0026L7DGA/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1295977397&sr=8-11

class 6 card 16 GB, 58 bucks. Transcend a decent brand? good price?

iPhone 4 pre-orders start Feb 3 and will be released on Feb 10. If you're talking about the iPhone 4G/5/whatever the fuck it'll be called, there's nothing set in stone that Verizon will be releasing a new one this summer. And I'd guess they're planning on moving to tiered data relatively soon for all phones.

don't know for sure, but they've grandfathered in just about everything before this, so i can't imagine they would screw over existing subscribers like that (especially in light of the abolishment of early annual upgrades). also, i mentioned to the verizon rep (corporate store, not those stupid retailers) that i wanted to go ahead and get in on the unlimited plan before they did away with it, and she agreed that it was probably the best idea and that i could get grandfathered in once they made the switch

however, i don't know if that will apply to LTE data plans or not. i would guess not, but i'm hoping it will
