Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Idle Time!

What Is It?
Essentially Folding@Home uses your unused CPU cycles to model how proteins fold in the human body. The misfolding of proteins is often involved in well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Because this endeavor requires massive amounts of computing power, their project uses spare CPU time on computers that would otherwise sit idle in homes and businesses across the world. Here at North Carolina State University, we have formed this team in order to donate our spare CPU time to help this important endeavor.

The North Carolina State University Folding@Home Team (Team # 59) was one of the first teams to join the Folding@Home project, and was the very first University-based team to join. We are currently ranked in the Top 100 teams in the world and are ramping up production in an effort to make it into the Top 50. We are all dedicated to doing our part to help end some of these terrible diseases, and we would appreciate the support of anyone who would like to help.

All it takes is the installation of a small piece of software and your computer will start completing Work Units for the project and the team. The Folding@Home process runs at the lowest possible priority so you can run it 24X7 without slowing down your computer or interfering with your everyday computing tasks. If you have a Sony PS3 Game Console you can also run Folding@Home on it with great results.

How can I Help?
Download and install the software appropriate for your OS (Windows/Linux/Mac). For dual/quad core computers, be sure you install the SMP client. It will get you and the NCSU team far more points than the traditional client. Whichever client you choose, we recommend running the Folding@Home client as a service. The client will run in the background without notification, and will release CPU resources as needed since it runs at the lowest priority. The NCSU Team Number is 59.

Visit the team homepage for detailed installation instructions

Windows Computers
We recommend using the "text-only console” client for most windows computers. If you have a dual/quad core processor, be sure to install and run the SMP client to get you and the team far more points than the standard console client In general, its best to stay away from the graphical clients. If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. Feel free to post in this thread with any questions.

Mac and Linux Computers
There are both "text-only" consoles and SMP clients for Linux and Macintosh computers too! If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor be sure to run the SMP client as you'll get far more points than the text-only client. But the regular console clients also help out too if you only have single-core processors.

Playstation 3
PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network and are capable of producing many points for the team. If you have PS3 system version 1.6 or later, you will see a Folding@Home icon in the Network column of the XMB (PS3 Networking menu). Just click on the icon and that's it. If you don't have 1.6 or later, perform a system upgrade. Make sure to use Team #59!

The more computers and PS3s you run the clients on, the more points your username and the NCSU team earns! Install as many clients as you can and watch your username/team progress at the stats page

normally if you just let it go for a few hours it will pick one up. if you get a few servers that go down out there you will be unable to get new workunits (getting the exact same message you posted) and/or be unable to submit your results.

if you're not getting new workunits i could see prospero's solution working there since maybe they'll send you to another server to get the new wu

Yes, I was experiencing this shit last night at around midnight. But as the previous reply stated, after a while trying 0.0.0.0 it locked onto a 172.x.x.x address and picked up a unit.

we've got our 24hr average up to 67k...but we're still trending down in the conquest/overtake chart

i think we'll need to get up around 75k to turn this thing back around.

yes, my new q9450 being on a new system, I have had to take it down a few times to reboot.

also, does anyone know how to stop the work so that it can pick up where it left off on reboot? i have lost 3 LARGE projects already do to this issue.

well the trick is to not run the client manually

install the client as a service as detailed on the website: http://www.ncsufolding.com/?page_id=4

i run all my clients as services, and i restart the pcs all the time and haven't had any problems lately

if you want to run it as a service, and you want to be able to shut down the client/service on demand with little effort (aka without having to open services.msc), all you have to do it set up 2 .bat files on your desktop with net stop "service name, and net start "service name" Then simply use those to stop and restart the clients/service on demand...though i rarely if ever feel the need to shut them down

if you set your checkpoints to the minimum of 3-5 minutes, then it will keep closer tabs on your work, at 15 min. per checkpoint, you could be losing 10-14 minutes of work.

also Ctrl+C will close down the manual client and stop folding properly.

with a service, just go to your services and shutdown the service to stop it properly.... like synapse said, if it's set to Automatic, it should start up just fine.

Yes, I understand and am running as a service.

I will have to check into the checkpoint times...

oh, it sounded like you were running it manually because of this

Quote :

when running as a service, you shouldn't take anything down. just reboot the machine, the service will stop and start on its own.

if you want to reconfig your client create a shortcut to fah.exe and add -configonly to the target.

another trick for running as a service, edit your registry to ensure the best performance for your client

start-run-regedit-hkey local machine-system-currentcontrolset-services-"FAH Service Name"
double click on imagepath and add -forceasm to the end. -svcstart should already be there if you configured it to run as a service

i'm testing running two smp clients on a quad-core E5320. Getting two of the 1760 point workunits (the best) i'm getting ~3300PPD...the same as I get with those workunits on a Q6600. Does that make sense? I assumed the Xeon would be better than a Q6600

Is there a cap on the points per WU ? it seems as if I am always getting 1760 per WU submitted.

If so the only thing you can do it try to get them completed faster.

there are a number of different work units for all different clients, and each different type of WU has a set point amount. for the smp client the 1760 point workunit is the best one, in terms of number or points per day.

and if you're using 100% cpu with the smp client you probably won't be able to get them done any faster than you are currently (assuming you're using that forceasm flag i mention above).

all you can do now is install more computer and PS3 clients to get more points (and try to move farther up in the Top 20 producers list)

I have had my PS3 on FAH for the last three days and it doesnt show any points for it online. And yes I have all the donor info correct on the FAH program.

Is there a way to see what each computer uploaded to the results server?

thats strange about the PS3...from what i can tell with mine it either gets 125pt workunits which get done about every 3 hours, and 1250 point WUs which take about a day. Unfortunately I don't know of a way to monitor point production on those...I'll keep looking into it and let you know. I see some hit my results every now and then.

i don't know of a way to see a raw representation of what WUs were submitted when. Maybe prospero or someone else knows of a way...

yeah i was looking at that...you should be showing some sort of activity over the last few days besides the smp workunits...

in fact i'm not seeing much activity from my ps3 today...besides a 125pt wu that just submitted. the one good thing i can say is that if you have the PS3 set up correctly (with your user name and team:59) and you're submitting work units, they will award the points eventually. sometimes a server goes down and you have to wait on the points. hopefully thats whats going on right now

you can do some reading on the ps3 client here if ya want:

"Intel to Cut Prices on Existing CPUs and Introduce New Parts in Q3

Intel puts more pressure on AMD with price cuts and new parts

Two things that drive the CPU world are price and performance. Depending on the needs of the consumer one or the other of these two factors is the main driver behind what processor is purchased. For many AMD CPUs the only place they compete currently in on price and Intel is starting to whittle away at the price difference.

Recent roadmaps reveal the company has another cut coming in Q3 2008. Simultaneously, Intel will release new quad-core and dual-core processors. This includes the 3.0 GHz Core 2 Quad Q9650 with a price of $530 in 1000 unit trays. The current Core 2 Quad Q9550 will get a significant price cut from its current $530 to $316.

A few of the older Intel CPUs will be phased out including the Core 2 Quad 9450. The 9450 will be replaced with the Core 2 Quad running at 2.66GHz at $266. Other quad-core processors being phased out include the Q9300 and Q6700 leaving the Q6600 as the only 65nm Intel CPU on the market selling for $203.

Intel will also make some changes in its dual-core lineup. The company will announce its Core 2 Duo E8600 3.33 GHz processor for $266, and discontinue the Core 2 Duo E8300. The E8500 and E8400 dual-core parts will drop to $183 and $163 respectively. A new entry-level Core 2 Duo part will debut called the E7300 running 2.66GHz for $133. The existing E7200 will get a price reduction to $113.

I've had my last 5 WU's end up with a "Hung" status in FAHMon. I'm guessing part of the problem is forceasm flag I have set on. I took that off, and pulled up two new WU's so I hope that fixes it. I've got the OC stable in Prime95 for 4 hours, so I don't think that's the issue.\

Any other ideas if changing the flag doesn't help?????
