Hey! I am trying to figure out a history class to take from the group 1 classes for my CHASS requirement. Options are: HI207, HI208, HI209, HI215, HI216, HI263, HI264, HI270, HI275, or HI276. For those of you who have taken these what were your experiences? History is my least favorite subject so I need something that will hold my attention (some at least). 8/9/2004 9:38:50 PM |

I took HI276 this summer. Dr. Kalinga is a great teacher, but expect to read a lot and earn all of your points. You learn a lot about West Africa, and you'll be glad that you took him. Only take him if you're willing to put effort, if not, don't take him. 8/9/2004 9:46:08 PM |

can you only take 200 level classes? 200 level history classes are the devil. I'm a history major and I hate 200 level history classes. the 300 and 400 level are far more interesting and actually easier a lot of the time. HI216 was extremely boring. Unless you have an extremely high interest in latin america I wouldn't take it. 8/10/2004 1:27:43 AM |

The Grp. 1 History requirement for CHASS majors is the most poorly designed requirement ever. Every selection sucks ass...
I was horribly miserable in my Col. Latin America class...stay away...or at least bring a crossword. 8/10/2004 2:21:12 AM |

Find an area which interests you ... probably be your best bet.
I'm in 207 right now, and the class covers Egypt, Mesopatamia, Greece and Rome. I'm finding it fairly interesting, as it covers it more in detail than my HS course. A LOT of information though, so exams take a bit to study for (not too awful bad, I think 20-25 pages of notes per exam).

HI276 was great - Kalinga is a funny guy, and his stories about being in Africa help a surprising amount in understanding the culture. 8/10/2004 8:52:03 AM |

That depends on what type of history you're into. I'm more into military history so Dr. Caddell is the man and his classes are easy. What are you transferring from? I started out in Engineering but decided to major in something I'm interested in. But I'm getting a BS in History so I don't have to take so many english/lit classes.8/10/2004 1:11:40 PM |

I just got done with Pumphrey for HI 208. Very very easy class. You have to write 2 papers and the exams are essay but even if you suck at that she gives out Bs and As. Her grade distribution is great from past semesters. The class is even fairly interesting (knights, rome empire, the Church) and she does have some wit about her. 8/11/2004 12:33:51 PM |
