Enough "Favorite Punk and Pop and other Shite Bands"...here's a top 10 with some balls, in no particular order:

Tool
Opeth
Lamb of God
Meshuggah
Bloodbath
Dimmu Borgir
Arch Enemy
Children of Bodom
Kalmah
Slayer

Okay, so Tool isn't really metal...but they can't not make my list. Feel free to flame and make your own list, but I wanna hear REAL flames here...not any of this "DIMU BURGER SUX CUZ THEY SOLD OUT ADN PLAYD IN OZZFETS KTHX LOOSER" bullshit. I know most of those are well known metal bands, so I also don't wanna hear anyone tell me I don't know anything about metal...this isn't a "let's see who can name the most bands nobody's heard of" thread. Alright, have at it.

Looks good to me, though I think most metal sucks now, so I'll keep it to 5

Lamb of God (Really the only good metal release of the year)
Cradle of Filth
3 Inches of Blood
Avenged Sevenfold
And Tool, for good measure

It Dies Today
Bury Your Dead
Deadwater Drowning

^fuck man, none of that is actually "straight up" metal...I'll give you deadwater drowning though, because they kicked ass

I am assuming this means "of all time", so...

Iron Maiden
Slayer
Megadeth
Opeth
Dragonforce
Rhapsody
Napalm Death
Morbid Angel
Darkmoon
Meshuggah

I dunno, that was off the top

^niiiiice \m/

^^also good list...yeah you're welcome to put favorite metal of all time; I was initially thinking newer bands, not necessarily the godfathers [metallica (yes, metallica), megadeth, maiden, sabbath, pantera (R.I.P. Dimebag ), but then again I listed Slayer...so whatever]

So if all you listen to is the godfather metal, that's fine go ahead and list them...just know they're pretty much a given and if you have more recent bands that you listen to that would be great. Please, no hair or 80's metal. If I see any Poison or Motley Crue on here, I'll die.

Thats either Arch Enemy or Otep.

I'm assuming the band you are referring to is Arch Enemy.

Cadaveria and Opera IX are also female vocals of similar style, among others, but Arch Enemy is a lot more well known, I suppose.

i'll think up my top 10 tomorrow, but it's almost 5am here and i can't narrow things down.

Thank you. Tool used to be my favorite band...until I listened to Opeth...within the same week as hearing my first Opeth song, I owned all 7 of their CD's and not long after the DVD. Yeah, they're fucking amazing. No other word for it; if you have not heard them, check out the album Blackwater Park...not necessarily my favorite album, but it's probably the best as far as an "intro" to the band. All seven of their albums are true masterpieces.

And yes, Arch Enemy and Otep both have female singers. The difference: Angela Gossow (of Arch Enemy) could kick your ass and give you a boner doing it. Otep is shit. NEVER confuse them with Opeth.

Sonofa: I agree, Opeth are the kings of music...Never will you hear a more dynamic, emotional, fucking-hardcore-and-yet-artistic metal band. Mikael Akerfeltd is a god. Tool, now there's a cerebral trip, that is music for the mind. Pure genius. I laugh at these kids that go around sporting Tool shirts because they heard Schism on the radio and thought it was cool to like them...you know who I'm talking about, tools. Cradle: I seem to be the only person not absolutely thrilled with Nymphetamine...whatever, to each his own. Arcturus: got me into alternate kinds of metal, eventually to black metal and beyond...great band, interesting stuff. Mastodon: though the singer sounds like he's trying to take a shit the size of the space needle, the band (and drummer!) are insane. In Flames: great melodic death metal, though they just aren't what they used to be...all downhill after the Jester Race. And Mudvayne, I don't care what anyone says, L.D. 50 was a genius piece of work, right on.

Metal, in this thread, can mean a lot of things. Nu-Metal is not metal. Godsmack is not metal. Metal is not radio. Other than that, anything is fair game as long as it balls-to-the-wall kicks ass.

that is EXACTLY the kind of attitude this kids need to take when they come in here and say bands suck because THEY have never heard of them.(not saying you are like that obviously since you started this thread but just saying this for others). instead of saying they suck without listening to them. look them up or ask more about them

^Amen. I just read another thread where some fuck actually said "well i've never heard of them so they must not be very good." I don't have to explain that one to you, if you're like me you'll agree that people like that should have rail spikes driven into their ear drums.

You know what would be the greatest show to ever grace this planet? Just think:

Tool and Opeth.

Yeah, now I gotta go put on some new underwear. Can you just fucking imagine what that would be like? That show would change your life. Okay now imagine a combination of them playing one blowout masterpiece of a musical creation: Maynard and Mikael singing, Mikael on acoustic, Peter Lindgren and Adam Jones on guitar, Justin Chancellor on bass (gotta say he might be a little more interesting than Martin Mendez), and (tough call here) Danny Carey on drums...Martin Lopez could be doing some crazy cultural percussion instead of his set...now just fucking imagine that show. I would never be the same.

holy fuck. someone else who has heard of kalmah...they are an incredible band that for some reason has not hit it big...if you like Children of Bodom, you MUST check out Kalmah. Imagine the same dual guitar skill and crushing speed riffage but withough the hoky keyboard "hits." Dont get me wrong, I like CoB's keyboards, but we all know it can get cheesy at times. thank you. I like your list; I think metallica just got a bad rap for their later albums. The only reason I didnt list them in my top ten is because I consider them godfathers of modern metal. Their first four albums were pure, raw thrash and were excellent. The only group I dont like on your list is Motley Crue...I just got Nightwish's 'Once' and I'll have to say, I like it more than I was expecting I would. I still get hung up on her vibrato (NOT a fan of power metal vocals) but there are enough other elements to their music to keep it interesting and worthwhile.

kalmah is just one of those bands that can cram 8 different riffs into one song and make it work. they really kick the level of playing up a notch. my only gripe about kalmah is the vocals are a little on the weak side.

I had almost given up on metallica until i saw them play in Prague. 3 hours straight with no openers and they came back with an encore of seek and destroy and whiplash.

^ahh...were they still able to keep up with seek and destroy and whiplash in their older and sober days?

yeah kalmah's vox are a little weak, but then again Alexi's aren't anything to write home about...Kalmah not only have insane solos, riffs, and breakdowns, they just tend to have an epic construction to the songs, never boring...always leave you satisfied. they're melodic too, and dont overuse false harmonics (fast becoming a metal cliche i'm afraid)

alright, i'll throw my hat in the ring here:

Cradle of Filth
Opeth
Anathema
Nightwish
Type O Negative (if all the screamo junk some ppl list counts, gothic metal counts)
Metallica (St. Anger excluded; that album is dead to me)
Bal-Sagoth
Emperor
In Flames (pre-Reroute to Remain)
Sonata Arctica

Quote :
"Cradle: I seem to be the only person not absolutely thrilled with Nymphetamine...whatever, to each his own."

I agree... Nymphetamine is a bit of a different direction for Cradle, and I don't care for it as much... there are a number of riffs in it that seem fairly un-CoF to me, and the whole album doesn't have the same overall atmosphere to it as their previous albums. On the whole though, they're still one of my all-time favorites.

Everything about Opeth has already been said.

Mastodon's latest album is crazy good--hella awesome drumming. They might make it to my list someday, but with only having 3 albums so far and starting in 2001, I can't call it yet.

If hetfield's voice is still intact, then how the hell did St. Anger happen? For the most over-produced album ever, Bob Rock couldn't do a damn thing to help the horrid vocals on it.
