I'm gonna be trying this.

I'm tired of doing nothing but raiding in WoW. Seeing a 75 dps fucking sword drop is just destroying my will to play.

lol yeah I'm on mannoroth

I'll never see the sword anyways because I left my raid guild.

suffice to say mannoroth is one of the most competitive PvP servers out there too, I just don't have the time to keep up

i got interested when my wow-life was fading, but the game doesnt sound all that good to me. it wont have the lasting power since it sounds like shadowbane (which i wasnt overly fond of).

anything is better than wow. after a while at 60 the game just turns into a shallow l33t fest, where you wait forever for shit that doesnt help enhance the game anyway -- just makes you look more l33ter

I heard a whisper that guildwars is very shallow, and the way it pays for itself is through expansion packs ever 3 months or so.

to me it seems itll just be a: max out ur char in 20 hours and then just pvp over and over again ranodmly. seems no better than a CS or quake in that manner. thats fine, but ill just do FPS if i want that.

mmos are so addicting because the sheer amount of time u gotta dump into it. WOW was quick and it still took 200+ hours to lvl to 60.

AND ALL MMO'S ARE ABOUT STANDING AROUND AND LOOKING LEET. WHAT DID PPL DO IN EQ?? BEAT AND FARM NEW BOSSES TO LOOK BADASS AND SO U COULD GO BEAT MORE BOSSES. they were forced to try and rape the unrapable cuz they had nothing better to do.

since WoW seems to be the common comparison...

WoW = conventional MMORPG with an EQish end-game for PvE (exluding battlegrounds here) where you spend hours and hours with large groups of people doing dungeon raids, etc...I don't have to go much into detail of gameplay because I'm sure anyone with invested interest reading this knows what goes on in the game.

Guild Wars = Mix of gamestyles MMORPG... the game plays/feels more like a Diablo/NWN style than a conventional MMORPG. Although it isn't as much click click click as it is strategy for skill selection in the longer run of things. It isn't the general behind the back or first person view gameplay. You can get up and quit on a whim and not really risk losing a lot of time or invested gameplay. Game content is updated on the fly while you play. There is no monthly fee.

Guild Wars is far from a WoW clone which I have heard a lot of people say now. I played WoW.. and I liked it.. but the end-game time commitment just isn't for me. Guild Wars allows a lot of PvE and PvP with an easy to play but complex skill system with a lot of combinations for primary/secondary classes in the long run to handle strategy playstyle moreso than paying off the people who can invest 5+hrs of sitting time per session. With school and work.. it just fits for me.. and no more damn monthly payment plans.. I can just buy the expansions if I want to.

For people who like WoW - thats great.. I wouldn't deter anyone from playing it.. but for those who are on a schedule like mine and just want to play something for fun and strategy with a few friends - Guild Wars hits the spot.

there really isn't as much need to grind at all... there are other aspects to get into (and it takes more than 20 hours lol) and if you just want to go right to the end and PvP they have a PvP creation system where you can make a level 20 character and play on the PvP only servers without any of the storyline or gameplay from the main game

i think my point was, it isnt an mmo really. it is just a pvp game that appears to have rpg qualities by puting in magical classes that you select skills from. it seems to be marketed as a MMO, which really isnt true to me. technically it is, but it lacks the standard MMO qualities.

to me MMO means commitment, but with tangible rewards for time put into the game in forms of ranks, gear, etc. the whole reason they are so immersive is the sheer amount of time you have to allocate to it and the fact that you cant just drop everything at once, because there are other people, creatures, etc in the world you have to worry about. guild wars, from what i've read is essentially just a diablo-esque leveling style + end game guild pvp. might as well just have clan matches in a diff game.

quit marketing it one way and just fess up to what it is. that said, my friend is getting it, and if it seems not to suck i may try it simply cuz wow's endgame is really lacking.

[Edited on April 28, 2005 at 1:47 PM. Reason : ^ the whole point of MMO's is that there are other ppl around...why not just play a single player ga]

well they did say from the begining that it wasnt exactly a mmorpg seeing that its all instances.

I loved the alpha and was very dissapointed when i played the second world preview. I dont know if it was the fact that everyone was stuck at 15 in the alpha and that you started as a level one in the second one but i lost something for me, and i was pushing the hell out of this game. Oh well, guess ill have to wait for dark and light before i quit WoW.... ( http://www.darkandlight.net/ )

I must say the 4 on 4 battles and all the pvp mini games were badass though

aye i think even wow suffers from the instancing issue. while it solves camping problems and allows for easier questing, it kinda takes away the feel of having so many people in one world.

while camping was annoying to deal with in eq, it was kinda interesting having queues and whatnot and fighting your way to monsters and whatnot, but also meeting other hunting parties along the way. having other ppl around to help and hurt your progress is the nature of the world and it was reflected in that game. in wow you really cant get away too easily nor can you get any help, kinda meh, but nice to be able to get some items easier (though it sucks if you only want the item at the end of a 3 hour instance, in which case id much prefer camping).

instancing just takes a massively multiplayer game and makes it a tiny game. in the same way only having bop items for a good majority of upper lvl loot makes the economy more boring. you can't have an mmo and still get that feel of playing with a small group of friends. they seem to directlly contridict each others philosophies.

I still won't say it is a MMORPG as much as it is a NWN/Diablo mix - I can't explain this game.. its just random easy to play kinda fun where I can get up and leave at will - thats the only reason why I like it

aye, since i might actually start doing things instead of dicking around cuz other ppl have classes i may just go back to console games or try this.

true... it won't fill any huge MMO fixation - but I think I'm pretty burned out of that altogether right now thank god

so long as I can play some football online now and then and mess around with GW on the PC - I've got enough video gaming to fill my schedule I think

so i played it. lvling up seems kinda like a dumbed down diablo a bit, but there are lots of little things that are nice. traveling takes 0 time once you get the way points, the quests always have arrows pointing which way to go. one prob is that you get like 80 quests and dont really keep track of um all and for single player only having a few spells is kinda lame. we'll see how it works.

Working on getting a guild house now. Then the instant lvl 20 chars will have a place to meet and do GvG stuff instead of 4 man pickups!

they have changed the game quite a lot... before in the older betas you could start grouping at level 1

technically you still can... but the skill gaining system with the early quests are best done solo... once you get what ya want... around level 7+ you may as well work with friends or grab henchmen to do quests and go from there - join guilds, etc, etc...

they also have some problems I think with the item system - that or they changed it dramatically since I played last... I'm REALLY hoping that is why the game servers are down right now to fix it

quite honestly it is a whole new game from what i remember - good for me since I didn't play the last 2 betas and didn't want to be bored with the start of it all - I just hope they fix the items

thats just it - the item system used to have a lot more usable rare items beyond the basic shitty stuff... I have yet to see anything really worth a damn drop at all - and the crafting system hasn't even really come into play either... totally unlike what I'm used to.. I just hope all these freaking items I'm salvaging and breaking down is going to be worthwhile in the end.

Find the collecting people.. in town or all over the land. Get what they want and you can pickup some of the lower level upgrades. For example.. as an elementalist my leggings are now 24 armor vs. 5 (i think thats what they started as). Some of the quests may be useful for items.. but the main thing to do is gather items and turn them in for stuff - or break down the junk you have to craft later on (best solution).

Some of the towns later will let you buy stuff as well. I'm still a bit confused with a lot of if myself since it is all relatively new.. but I'm stockpiling tons of resources to trade, use, etc, etc.. later on.

oh yeah.. one of the towns has a guy that sells bags - and there is a belt pouch thing you can do early on with turning in items somewhere... don't honestly remember locations though sorry

I was thinking Necro/War for a fighting class, or a Ele/Mez for a casting class, I cant decide what to be.

And what is the point of having ranger as your primary?

I'm Ele/Mes... I've done War/Necro before and it wasn't bad.... Monk/Mesmer or Mesmer/Monk is one of my favorites. Honestly depends on how you want to play and more importantly.. who you want to play with. My Ele/Mes is made to be self-sustaining and do most of the dmg output for a group of 3 of us who play together. Can heal by stealing mana (converting) or just steal mana to replenish your own.. and massive dmg output AoE style.

My alt will be a Ranger... very unsure on alt now.. I was going to do Ranger/Mesmer but might not want two chars with a mes secondary.

By the way.. if you are finding the first few levels of the game boring.. I agree. They kind of made it... well I don't know.. different. There is a lot of stuff going on and you really should read the story to lose some of the confusion. Once you reach 7+ start grouping with people and doing the missions (starting at the north wall area). It gets tougher that way and forces you to either learn how to work well with people.. or get some henchmen and outlevel and plow through it

yeah when i was like 3-5 and got that quest i was like HOW THE FUCK DO YOU GET THROUGH THE DOOR. then i kinda figured it out. just hit like 7.5 and gotta do it.

war/ele seems weird, but it allows you to do some pretty beast dmg by using the aoe fire spell point blank and then bleeding each enemy. they go down pretty quick. i mainly wanted to have a warrior with slowing/bolts but mezmer seemed to obvious so i wanted to take a more interesting approach. when i saw war/ice was a prebuilt one i was kinda like....oh unlike the template though im gonna continue my sword route or go axe for ae madness.

working on a necro/mez as an alt too, doesnt last quite like the war in the first one

yeah - I honestly think the reason why I will enjoy this game in the long run is that I won't mind playing through it with some other weird class combinations... almost anything can be viable given the right situation and playstyle

right now I'm at Yak's Bend trying to get to Borlis Pass and I just can't do it solo with the henchmen... I get close but when you got a -40% penalty - shit gets difficult to kill!

oh yeah - great thing about this game is that it isn't split up by servers... yell if ya see me - name is Cipher Dexx - lvl 12 right now

so what is the prediction for long term playability for this game? I've been tempted to pick it up since it has no monthly cost, but I just can't justify the money for a new game right now.

id equate it to any other enjoyable team game. a good comparison in my eyes is CS. though they arent similar in play style, the concept rings true... small group vs group combat with strategy. lil diff cuz of the debuffs and whatnot of fantasy games, but same basic idea. it has relatively never ending replayability if you enjoy it and have a good group of friends that play a bit.

it doesnt have a monthly cost so at worst if you lvl up 1 char or play some multiplayer it'll be equiv to buying a console game.
