so then apple puts enough developers on openoffice that they can't help but ship a MacOS version of openoffice...and hell, if Apple does for openoffice what they did for an interface on top of freebsd, i don't think we'd be seeing microsoft office around too much longer anyway (yeah, somewhat far-fetched...but at least OO would be taking a much larger market share than it is now)

on a side note, OO 2.0 is due out this month....we'll see what actually happens, but from using the latest builds, it's an absurd amount better than the 1.x versions

"Ratcheting up its support of XML, Microsoft announced on Thursday that it will release a new Extensible Markup Language (XML) technology that replaces existing Office file formats for Word, Excel and PowerPoint with fully-documented, royalty free formats.

The formats, called Microsoft Office Open XML, will debut in the second half of 2006 with Office 12 and constitute a dramatic upgrade to Office and a broad extension of Microsoft's XML strategy - without the direction of standards bodies. "

Whether or not apple has office won't matter after the format opens up a little bit.

HER DIARY:

Saturday, May 21st 2005

Saw him in the evening and he was acting really strangely. I went shopping in the afternoon with the girls and I did turn up a bit late so thought it might be that. The bar was really crowded and loud so I suggested we go somewhere quieter to talk. He was still very subdued and distracted so I suggested we go somewhere nice to eat. All through dinner he just didn’t seem himself; he hardly laughed and didn’t seem to be paying any attention to me or to what I was saying. I just knew that something was wrong. He dropped me back home and I wondered if he was going to come in; he hesitated but followed. I asked him again if there was something the matter but he just half shook his head and turned the television on. After about 10 minutes of Silence, I said I was going upstairs to bed. I put my arms around him and told him that I loved him deeply. He just gave a sigh and a sad sort of smile. He didn’t follow me up but later he did, and I was surprised when we made love. He still seemed distant and a bit cold, and I started to think that he was going to leave me and that he had found someone else. I cried myself to sleep.

MAN’S DIARY:

Saturday, May 21st 2005

Apple switched to Intel.

Absolutely gutted.

Got a shag though. "

the comparison on anandtech was interesting... more so that it focuses on software differences at the end bit, also I didn't see windows doing anything in that comparison at all.... just Unix....

that said, some of the tests show even-ness and others show gross in-equalities (namely the MySQL) testing apparently tanked the Mac system for what they think were OS reasons...)

overall they seem roughly equal in many respects.... i would have been interesting to have run a version of windows on there as well with many more background processes and more overall bulk than Unix has...

Quote :
"Adobe's PC programs are MASSIVELY faster than their OSX counterparts."
haven't tested this myself in the last year or so but i doubt massively faster is somthing that would be used...

Quote :
"All this anti-trust is a bunch of complete fucking bullshit."

check out gas prices.... and diamond prices.....

i dont get why so many windows users apparently feel threatened by the 'insignificant' mac users.... hell i use both and am happy with both...

I couldnt give 2 shits in a cess pool really

No windows user feels threatened by OSX.

Rather, OSX users feel the need to flaunt the superiority of their OS to which the best reply is:

"Hey lets go to the software aisle."

Yea that is funny until you realize that the "spyware removal ap isle" as so you call it is bigger then the mac isle at an Apple store.

Oh and they happen to sell other software for windows too.

" Dell CEO Would Be "Happy" to Sell Apple's OS X on His PCs E-mail
Contributed by Devin
Thursday, 16 June 2005
David Kirkpatrick of Fortune reported an interesting e-mail from Michael Dell, chairman and CEO of Dell Computers, that said he would be open to selling PCs with Apple's OS X operating system.

AppleDell wrote in the e-mail, "If Apple decides to open the Mac OS to others, we would be happy to offer it to our customers."

This is the first major player in the PC manufacturing business that has openly admitted to the desire to run Apple's popular operating system on their PCs. While Apple hasn't officially stated any plans to open up OS X to any other platform, this is a major endorsement from the PC industry.

Since Apple's announcement last week that they would be transitioning over to the x86 platform using Intel CPUs, speculation has run wild in the industry. This isn't the first time that running OS X on a PC has come up, but many industry analysts think it could be a risk to Apple.

One of Apple's key advantages in the operating system business is that the computer company tightly controls the hardware that their OS is run on. Windows, on the other hand, faces the challenge of working on multiple configurations from different manufacturers to home-built boxes. If Apple were to license OS X to run on other Intel-based PCs, the operating system that is known for its ease-of-use might not "just work" anymore.

Another alternative for Apple is to only license their operating system to PC manufacturers that agree to a rigid set of hardware requirements.

The latest stance from Apple on the issue was presented right after Steve Jobs' Intel announcement. Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller remarked about the idea of running OS X on PCs, "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac." "

From page 1:

Quote :
"If apple announces on Monday that it, "plans to move... to Intel chips in... higher-end models such as the Power Mac in mid-2007" then I hereby pledge to retire this name that same day."

It would also seem to fly in the face of Apple’s gushing June announcement that X86 microprocessors would “permeate the entire Macintosh product line by the end of 2007”.

anyway, this argument is as good as over. apple broke their word; they're not going to switch all their shit over by 2007 - and now i'm back.

Broke their word? Apple NEVER said they would switch ALL of ANYTHING by ANY date. They SAID they would have x86 based desktops and laptops on the market by 2007. How YOU rationalize it is your business, but you STILL are wrong and going back on your "word".

Also you dipshit, they ALREADY have WORKING x86 units in the wild (developer kit) and a fully functional OS to go with it. So I hardly see how it's a lie or fake or anything else you propose.

In addition, they are going to keep around PPC's on servers for a while because they ARE much more powerful for certain clustered computing. Especially in the scientific supercomputer realm, the PPC architecture is hardly dead or surpassed by x86 yet.

In other words, the deal could just be a contingency plan in case of a delay, or it could simply allow Apple to buy chips to repair or replace those used in older models.

But the deal could indicate that Apple is worried that a delay is possible or even probable."

You can infer what you want from this move, but Apple has not reneged on their statement.

Only if it changes to usbc and even then no cause those are even cheaper than usb c to lightning. Most people prob have a box of cables in their closet anyways, or went from iphone to iphone so over time got a ton of cables stockpiled. And cables are so cheap anyways. Just got a 2 pack of usbc to lightning cables for like 8 off slickdeals
