That reminds me...that goddamn FA Cup Final was the worst display of finishing I have ever seen from a side with so much talent. I had my head in my hands at least ten times in that match.

P.S. gg Roy Carroll

With Van der Saar coming in, Timmy Howard may be a permanent backup if he doesn't pull some form out of his ass. We need him to be ready for the WC in case Keller finally cracks somewhere along the way.

USA won last night 3-0. Am I correct in saying that with one more US win, we are pretty much gauranteed a spot? here are the standings in our zone:

G W D L GF GA Pts
Mexico 5 4 1 0 9 3 13
USA 5 4 0 1 11 3 12
Costa Rica 5 2 1 2 6 8 7
Guatemala 5 1 1 3 7 8 4
Trinidad and Tobago 5 1 1 3 4 9 4
Panama 5 0 2 3 2 8 2

^^ Five games left, same five opponents with opposite venues of the first half.

Top three in the hex go automatically, fourth in the hex plays fifth from Asia for the last spot in the WC.

Any team that loses in the first round of CONCACAF qualifiers is out, period, but most of them are tiny island nations like St. Kitts that never had a chance in the first place.

Donovan just flubbed a sure-fire short ground cross to Onyewu. I know it's nitpicky to bitch about stuff this early, but we've had problems finishing all year and it's even worse when you don't finish gifts.

Goalkeeper gave the ball to Donovan at 18 yards and he flubbed the finish AGAIN.

Convey gets a yellow for a stupid tackle and will be suspended for the Mexico game.

GODDAMMIT.

That's two wide open chances each flubbed by Convey and Donovan.

Bench 'em.

Perhaps that's a bit harsh, since one of Convey's chances came off a beautiful ball from Donovan, but Bruce constantly talks about finishing yet continuously plays the guys who don't finish.

I'm guessing it must've been Twellman.

I saw a commentary before this game analyzing our performance in the Gold Cup. I think it says a lot about our deficiencies in regards to the attack, especially considering Beasley didn't play tonight (this is an American that covers all CONCACAF on his free time):

USA

Rarely has a tournament winner looked so uninspired. The USA likes to talk about their depth, but it was shallow paddling all the way at the Gold Cup. The attack was Beasley and Donovan, or perhaps Donovan and Beasley, and if they were absent or off their game, there was nothing doing. At the moment the team has no third striker. The back line looks very slow, and the highly touted Oguchi Onyewu is still way too raw for prime time. Two pieces of good news: midfielder John O'Brien is back (at least until he gets injured again) and Kasey Keller is still alive (and if you missed the post-Final interview on Univision, speaks a pretty decent brand of Spanish, too!). The USA is sitting pretty in the Hexagonal, but goes into the second half with lots of injuries--Steve Cherundolo, Eddie Johnson, Pablo Mastroeni, Eddie Pope, Steve Ralston. Four years ago, under similar circumstances, they collapsed. That's unlikely to happen again, but the road home might be a stagger rather than a breeze.

Wow.

Shit up front. Total shit. It's like there's no use in even talking about the finishing, because trying to focus on it doesn't seem to help. On the upside, save for that late one-on-one chance, the defense looked very solid.

That Mexican referee wouldn't give us a goddamn thing late.

^ c'mon man, cheer up, you could be France

Mexico 2:0 Costa Rica off Jared Borgetti and Ramon Morales goals
Guatemala 2:1 Panama (Carlos Ruiz and Jorge Dely Valdes respectively, and then Gonzalo Romero wins the game in injury time)

Mexico 5-0-1 16pts
United States 5-1-0 15pts
Costa Rica 2-3-1 7pts
------------
Guatemala 2-3-1 7pts
------------
Trinidad & Tobago 1-4-1 4pts
Panama 0-4-2 2pts

Costa Rica looks like they'll take 3rd. With their late win, the 4th spot looks like it'll come to Guatemala. Trinidad play them at home Labor Day weekend and need a win. 4th will get to play either Bahrain or Uzbekistan. That looks like that'll be a good series (sarcasm). This extra half-qualifying spot will be gone come the 2010 cycle for us unless some major politicking goes on.

Asia will pick up Australia plus the FIFA bigshots really want China in the finals so they'll keep theirs probably.

I found these pics and thought they were kinda cool. For those of you who don't know, Drew Carey is a HUGE soccer fan and goes to every single USA game, including those in tiny Caribbean nations, Mexico, the Netherlands, etc. He also always gets a press pass from the USSF so he can stand on the field. In these pics, he's handing over $200 to the Sam's Army section at the last game againt T&T to buy beer for the front row.

Photos are from Fred Kfoury at America's greatest soccer pics site, http://www.ibiblio.org/footy.

^ He'd be a great mouthpiece for U.S. soccer, too bad some people can't see that. I think he goes to most L.A. Galaxy games as well.

Could you see him starting a Cleveland franchise in the MLS or USL?

...which is precisely why he'd be such a good spokesperson for US Soccer. Drew Carey is the closest thing you'll find to an Everyman in a celebrity. He's fat, he's nerdy, he loves beer and baseball...AND HE ALSO LOVES SOCCER. The working man angle that he could give to soccer promotion in the US is just what it needs, and like Ryan said, I'm amazed that the USSF hasn't done anything about it yet, especially considering they make all sorts of arrangements for him already.

i totally agree. ive been busy with TONS of crap so far and havent been able to actually watch most of our qualifying games except for a little here and there.

how has reyna been doing?

hes never lived up to the full potential he had, or at least the US coaches have always thought he had IMO. hes always been a decent player but just seems to be lacking yet the coaches seem to act like hes a huge star
