no doubt the conversion would be an expensive one, but BMW (as well as others) already have safe hydrogen powered engines and filling stations local to a small portion of the UK and Germany.

i'm starting to feel like a grampa with this fossil fuel shit.

Cane-based ethanol is selling for cheaper than gasoline in Brazil, and it burns much cleaner.

However, it would actually be a huge step for us to make. For one thing, we do not have the environment to produce those kinds of amounts of sugar cane. Farmers in the US are using corn to make ethanol, but not in the kind of capacity required for a market-driven shift in infrastructure. As it is, the house and senate have both submitted energy bills that require increases in ethanol in our fuel supply, but it will never reach the levels seen in Brazil, where you can buy 100% ethanol at almost any pump. Brazil's conversion to an ethanol system was some 30 years in the making, and required extensive government intervention of the type that can only occur in a socialism.

unless you changed cars this is not possible - possibly closer to $25 for the latter or $15 for the former

what are you talking about?
my camry regularly takes $30 to fill up
and if i had had it when gas was sub-$0.80, it would have taken ~$10

i remember buying PREMIUM gas for less than a dollar...

you quite possibly remember sub $0.80/gallon gas - but you don't remember that large of a change within a 4-6yr period

Compared with Gasoline
Think a gallon of gas is expensive?
This makes one think, and also puts things in perspective

Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29 . . . .$10.32 per gallon

Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19 ...........$9.52 per gallon

Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 ..... $10.17 per gallon

Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 . $10.00 per gallon

Brake Fluid ; 12 oz $3.15 . . . $33.60 per gallon

Vick's Nyquil 6 oz $8.35 . . . $178.13 per gallon

Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85. . . $123.20 per gallon

Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 . . $25.42 per gallon

Scope 1.5 oz $0.99 . . . $84.48 per gallon

And this is the REAL KICKER...

Evian water 9 oz $1.49..........$21.19 per gallon?!

($21.19 for WATER - and the buyers don't even know the source.
Evian spelled backwards is Naive.)

So, the next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on
water, Scope, Whiteout, Pepto Bismal or Nyquil!

And by the way, where the fuck does a 9 oz bottle of Evian cost $1.49?

There was a car change in between, but I was making a point.

And btw, I noticed something fundamentally stupid about the list above. I noticed it when I asked myself how often I buy gallons of Scope.

By the way, I obviously don't actually want gas to hit four or five dollars per gallon in the US. However, if it somehow gets to those prices without the demand in the market not adjusting for it, there is something seriously wrong with America.

and why is 100 buck by winter such a big deal? in europe they pay more $4+ for a gallon for number of years. instead of eating out 2x a month, you will put money in gas.

John Snow pointed out that we probably don't have to worry about much higher oil prices because the rest of the world's industrial base is acting like a safety valve. When prices go up, worldwide industrial production falls, reducing demand. If you look at the numbers, Worldwide industrial production has fallen substantially over the past year or so in direct response to higher energy prices. The exceptions, of course, are America where industrial production has grown slowely and China where they are simply paying the higher prices.

What many people seem to be ignoring is the ability of the market to automatically allocate resources most efficiently. In other words, only rich people can afford the new higher prices.

As a matter of comparison, third world countries spend a larger percentage of their GDPs purchasing energy, which might seem strange seeing as they largely do not own cars or have electricity. But while they may consume, let us imagine, 1/10th the oil of industrialized citizens, they have 1/20th the income of industrialized citizens.

We Americans can afford the higher prices, Africans cannot. So Africans cease consuming and the level of inequality grows even wider

So give up thinking high oil prices are a good thing because it might make Americans start riding bikes and riding the train. Realize that all it is going to do is bankrupt the poor and further increase the hardship associated with poverty.

Alcohol is also less efficient than gas. Most Brazilians will fill up with gasoline because in the end it costs pretty much the same.

They've been using this system for over 30 years now, and we are finally trying to do the same with soy beans. So we are trying to move forward.

the problem with america is easy to get credit with high interest rates and people not watching their finances. gas is $5/gallon? oh, i'll just put it on my credit card.

if the use continues despite higher prices, i bet a lot of people will go into large debt real fast. their lives will suck when they go bankrupt, or their kid's lives will suck when they inherit their parent's debt on top of the debt they have created because of what they learned from their parents.

Let me get this straight, are you telling me Americans are not smart enough to cover an extra $100 a month of expenses?

Just ask WalMart if they think Americans are that stupid.
Quote :
"While Wal-Mart Stores blamed higher gas prices for cutting into its sales in the second quarter, CEO Lee Scott said Tuesday he's concerned that the worst may be yet to come."

http://money.cnn.com/2005/08/16/news/fortune500/walmart/index.htm

As such, the higher the price of gas, the less we seem to spend at Wal-Mart. Therefore, your statement is disproved, we are not being blindsided by anything. Human beings get a sense for how much money they have available to spend and act accordingly.

Then, because the republicans will next pass a bill that outlaws bankruptcy filings, you'll be put into prison for being broke and have to work off your debt.

I think its too premature to make that call, based on this quarter's earnings.

Remember, there was not a DECREASE in sales, just a DECREASE in growth. The quarter still yielded record sales, just less than what was projected.

Not even wal-mart can maintain a high rate of increase in sales growth forever. Couple that with Target's continuous gains in market share, consumers' negative perception of Wal-mart as a company, AND rising gas prices, and you have a bigger picture of how growth is decelerating due to multiple factors. Of course, correlating it solely with fuel costs makes for a hotter news topic.

Rising fuel costs will have a bigger impact on the back end than the front end.

If you knew the way some people used bankruptcy and passed the debt along to the rest of society then you might see things differently. Its far too easy an escape. People need to be more personally responsible for how they handle their lives.

That's why we should have spent billions to find alternative energy after 9-11. $300 billion and 4 years of research might have yielded better results than invading Iraq.
