1) Tomas Haake of Meshuggah
This man is fucking inhuman. How he can drum in three (yes, three, I am sure) different time signatures at the SAME TIME is beyond genius; how you can just jam like he does, playing different times at the same time while the music itself changes time every measure... his mind works in a way that I cannot comprehend, and he (and Meshuggah as a whole) plays a completely different style of music. when you combine math and acid, you get this...no question my favorite drummer.
2) Danny Carey of Tool
I don't need to explain this one, I'm sure noone out there will disagree
2) Martin Lopez of Opeth
Tied here with Danny Carey--I never can decide whos style I like better, so I wont. Martin has the uncanny ability to put the perfect beat to EVERY part of a song...in addition to being very skilled, what I'm more impressed with is what he chooses to play and when he plays it, not necessarily how hard it is. Again I doubt any of you will argue with this one
4) Brann Dailor of Mastodon
Along the lines of Tomas Haake, we have the math metal drummers...Brann is a crazy fucker, I don't know how else to describe him. He never comes down to settle on a base beat pattern, he is always moving and changing and is fucking relentless...besides being an incredible drummer, this guy has the stamina of a cross-breed between a camel and Ron Jeremy.
5) Dave Lombardo of Slayer
The man is a fucking badass. Enough said.
I started to put some honorable mentions here, but I immediately thought of about 20 more drummers I wanted to put down...so fuck it, it's really only about the top 5 anyway

it'd also be interesting to note who of those that reply is a drummer. i'm a drummer, and i think that any musician looks for different things in his instrument(s) than most do...probably why tomas haake is my favorite, most people wouldnt appreciate or care about what he does behind a set

I don't think these are the best by any means (well Cobham is one of the best of all time), but they are my favorite in terms of how much they've influenced me.
Danny Carey (Tool) Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins) Josh Freese (APC) Billy Cobham (Mahavishnu Orchestra, blows all the other people in this thread clear out of the water except for Chambers) Stewart Copeland (Police, not the best, but i just love his sound)
Horatio Hernandez, Dennis Chambers, Tony Williams, Buddy Rich, Neal Peart, Bonham are all kings of their trade as well and easily worth mentioning. There are plenty more I'm not doing justice. 7/8/2005 3:39:32 PM |

One day, a tuba player wanted to torture the drummer behind him, so he hid one of the drummer's sticks.
After looking around for a few minutes, with a frantic, wide-eyed expression, the drummer fell to his knees, flung his arms wide, and screamed to heaven:
"Finally! The miracle, after all these years! I'm a Conductor!"
