yeah, i know i've made this topic before but it's over 90 days old, fuckers.

anyway, i ended up going with 4.10s from Randys and plan on installing them sat. night. i was told to drive about 5-10 miles and check them and fluid change. then go easy for 500 miles and no towing. any other tips about gear installation that wasn't mentioned before?

gear break in is a myth. just a way for companys to cover their ass. just drive it, and change the fluid after a few hundred miles.

i tend to agree. i have had no problem anytime with gears gettin in it and driving it. but do change the fluid

yeah, set the shims and backlash correct the first time and you wont have to think about it again

i though the first heat cycles work harden the gears.

not breaking in gears you can strip the teeth right off if you get it.

yeah, the first heating of the gears does change them a bit, but 99% of the hardening is done in the manufacturing process. metalurgy has come far enough it's not really needed. if they're set up correctly, you should have no more chance of breaking teeth when they're brand new or when they've got a few thousand miles on them. there are still some people who swear by the break in process though, there's two sides to the argument.

well, thanks for the advice. i'm gonna kick some ass if i screw up these gears by towing my 3000 pound landscape trailer. i know that ain't much but i was told it was enough to ruin 'em. of course, when i asked how the gears can withstand pushing a 5000 pound truck around, how would an extra 3000 pounds hurt, they just shrugged.

^wow, i've never had a rear wheel bearing last long enough on one of those to tear up a gear. wtf were they tinking about when they decided to use the axle as the inner race?

true, it's cheap insurance just to do it. look around on pirate, there's a few good threads over there that go into detail about it.

well, i finally got the fuckers in. went from 3.42 to 4.10 and wow, what a difference. speedometer is now +15mph off and i'm turning 2,400 rpm at 70mph. that bitch takes the hell off though so it put a smile on my face.

2400 rpm at 70 isnt bad, my truck turns up 2200 at 70 and doesnt get horrible gas mileage, of course i'm running a 3.62 front and rear
