My development workstation here at work is a Dual Xeon 3.2GHz processor SuperMicro server. I currently have 1GB of memory, but I need more. I scavenged an additional 1.5GB of memory out of one of our external storage controllers the other day, but the memory isnt the same type.

The memory in the machine I'm using now has four 256MB DDR2 PC3200 ECC ram sticks in it.

What I have scavenged is two 512MB DDR333 ECC sticks, and two 256MB DDR333 ECC sticks.

My question is can I use the other memory, and will I have to underclock the rest of the computer to do it? I doubt the DDR333 will overclock up to the DDR400 memory that I'm using in the machine now. But being able to have 2.5GB of memory available would be invaluable to me at work.

The processors in the machine are dual Xeon 3.2GHz, with a 200MHz FSB, 16x multiplier, and a bus speed of 800MHz. I basically need to know if I can underclock the machine to match the memory. The processor speed lost by underclocking to match the memory will be more than made up for by the addition of the 1.5GB of ram.

PS. I dont know jack about overclocking/underclocking.

if you put in the lower speed ram the system should automagically underclock the pc3200 to pc2700

yeah, thats what I was afraid of, I still havent tried it yet. I may put the memory into another if I have the time and patience

Its a shame to let 1.5GB of memory go to waste

DON'T TRY IT. DDR2 should not mix with DDR. But I don't even know if they could fit into each others' slots anyways.

DDR1 is 184pin, DDR2 is 240pin. no go. even if it ws physically compatable it wouldnt work anyway. DDR2 has a lot of bells and whistles DDR1 doesnt so when the controller tried to use them itd shit.

found this: http://www.kingston.com/literature/MKF_684_DDR2_FAQ.pdf

It doesn't fit...you can't try it........then again I've talked to people who've said they've shoved a AGP Card into a PCI Slot.....
