I was not. But basically refurbished from InFocus, plain and simple, nothing like "my grandmom has a friend, that has an uncle that works in Infocus, and get employee discount ...." - website, look for store, refurbished equipment. $799 + tax + shipping

Just testing if anybody has it here, and maybe has tried one of the DIY screens ....

I had a DIY screen and it worked well for what it cost. (around $20-30 bucks).

However, when I could afford it, I invested in one of those glass beaded screens for around ~$150. I think it's definitely worth the money. But if you're tight on cash, DIY will definitely get you by. Find a JoAnns Fabric or some place like that and get some blackout cloth and some felt cloth.... Lowes for some of the right size wood and a staple gun.... and carefully follow one of the many guides on the internet.

If you can afford it tho, I recommend a glass beaded screen from DaLite.

OK. Tested ... impressive! in particular when really dark ..(shame since my house, is really lighted-up!

Found a board in Loews that could work 12$ ... great as screen, need to mount it ...

and finally got the PSP ...nice little toy, but too many toys in very few days!!!! :-O

glass beads are retroreflective, it will be perfect if you mount the projector in a table etc.. (near your viewing level). with a ceiling mount (esp. with a short throw) its a waste of money unless you stand under your projector to watch movies. you would be better off saving your money and just getting a high contrast white screen and give up on attempts to defeat the physics of projector black levels.


ps : do you live in a greenhouse? you should have no issues with brightness using a dlp. maybe you should look into a gray screen to improve your blacks with moderate light. ive never actually used or been in a room with a gray screen so i cant comment on if it would work decently from first hand experience.

but if like me you had a ceiling mount with a long as fuck throw, Glass beaded DaLite high gain is the fucking hotness.

Dont waste your money building a screen.

Go to bhphoto.com and get a dalite high gain glass beaded pulldown with CSR. the 84" square screen should run about 200 bucks.

Your projector is still getting the best view, so unless your head is on the ceiling you arnt getting your moneys worth.

Any update on the name of the blackout cloth from joann? I just got a panasonic PT-AE700U (really nice btw) and it dose native 16:9, and is bout 96" diag on my wall right now (so smaller square screens wont work). It looks really nice on my offwhite wall right now, but would like to try the cheap cloth trick to see if i can make it look even better. thx in advance.

I hung it from the wall, and beamed an image on it. In my setup it isnt any better then a white cloth when seated. standing up YES but i dont stand up to watch movies. this is a common and well documented complaint with retroreflective screens, it isnt so much a compaint (its inevitable) as it is a tradeoff. for a table mount projector it would work great. i dont see how it would work very good for ceiling mount unless you had a really low hanging projector, a long throw, and high seating. maybe the advantages you were seeing was simply the fact that it helps reflect ambiant light back to its source not to your eyes (the nature of a retroreflective surface).

To answer the other question im borrowing the screen from a friend (who bought it from noen), and is not mine to sell. I do however have a 12 foot moterized da lite i would sell , my room isnt fuckin big enough .

I have a basement that gets pitch black with a 10' ceiling. The ultimate goal is to finish it and mount a projector on the ceiling.

I'm just low on funds right now. I did see a projector at BJ's for around $750-$800 but I'm sure it probably has low brightness - then again there is no exterior light coming into the basement...

in an optimal room you dont need 2000 lumens, those are for powerpoint in lecture halls. 500-1000 lumens is enough and fairly common. look at the sanyo z2/z3

The 4805 is a 16:9 projector while the pb6100 is not. The res is higher but you will get the light bands above and below the picture if in 16:9 mode, while the 4805 will not because of its true 16:9 aspect ratio. I've read quit a few reviews where people say in a dark room the 4805 outperforms most pj's in its price range. However in ambient light it's not as good as a high lumen pj such as the pb6100 or 6200.

4805 --- is crap in a well lit room....basically cause its only 750 lumens...so by day in my house is not really great......

PB6100, we have it in my department....CRAP for looking at movies....really bright, but ..... 4:3 native, so on movies your're fucked....and does not give as much details as the 4805...

4805 is within the first 3 positions on that budget, with the Optoma and the panasonic....

benq ---- good only for powerpoint presentations on a conference room ....

the pb6100 is a higher res(not everything is 16x9 try 99 percent of tv), its the same price, and brighter

Once again Quinn ... i stick to 16x9 .... i hate 4:3 for everything .... i hate 4:3 monitors, projectors, and TVs ....I have the 6100 in my workplace and have taken it home various times....and sincerely ........ i prefer the 4805 .... (othewise, and of course, i would have bought the 6100)....

How absolutely nothing is 16x9.

Except HDTV, not that 480p is all that grand wall size anyway though.

Quinn, unfortunately many movies are not 16x9, they're usually slightly more (20X9?) ...so you get some black bands....but definitely 4:3 ....no way ....i HATE 4:3 ......sorry, but i stick to the infocus instead for that reason....
