Who lives in the midwest?
I've been living in Kansas City for 7 months now. 8/5/2005 11:57:23 AM |

Just moved to Denver, CO. Very homesick for the south.
actually, on second thought, I'm not really in the midwest ... but I'm still too far from NC, does that count?

KC leaves a bit to be desired to tell you the truth. It's very spread out (440 is like 20 miles in circumference, 435 is 80 miles). Downtown has it's nice bars, but there's a lot of crime which is why I live up north. All in all, I suppose it's not bad. The traffic is pretty bearable, not too many problems. 8/5/2005 10:56:42 PM |

^Most of the bars are in midtown. Downtown is pretty dead after 5. Lawrence (Univ. of Kansas) has a pretty sweet stretch of bars, etc. on Mass St., but that is 30-45 mi. east. The biggest problem is there really isn't much to do other than drink. 8/6/2005 8:39:40 AM |

The plaza isn't so bad and they're putting more and more stuff up in the northland (which is where I live). I'm mostly at Tanner's downtown. There's always a motley-crew out there. EIther that or Johnny O'Quigleys up north or Tomfooleries.
Yep, drinking is all we have. 8/6/2005 3:20:01 PM |

Yes, there is more starting to pop up in the Northlands, and some decent stuff in the Plaza, but still not a ton. They may put in a few bars near the 25 arenas they are building for minor league hockey teams. 8/7/2005 7:30:09 PM |

^^^^^^ Have you been to Zona Rosa? It's like Plaza North. It's got a few bars, some nice stores, etc. It lacks the "bum factor" that's on the plaza which is a plus and it's only 7 miles from my house instead of 40. 8/8/2005 9:48:51 AM |

I went to Zona Rosa, after completion of "Phase One". Tomfooleries was the only bar there then, and it seemed OK. I thought the general idea was pretty good, but the development seemed a big "fake" and poorly constructed to me (i.e. box shopping center building with a facade pasted on the front). It is way up there if you don't live in the Northlands.
Haven't been there in a good 6 months or so, and I'm sure it is changing as they build more of it. 8/8/2005 1:46:22 PM |

Yeah, they're putting in an O'Dowds and a few other bars. It's actually nice. It's not the plaza, but I don't know what we can expect. The plot of land Zona's on is rather small, kinda bunched up there on I-29 and and Barry. 8/8/2005 1:48:48 PM |

I am moving to St. Louis on Friday of this week, only spent about 5 total days in the Midwest my whole life so I am a bit apprehensive..... (2 in chicago, 3 in st louis)
any advice/recomendations/tips would be welcome 8/9/2005 8:35:03 PM |

St. Louis is more like an "east coast" city... dc, baltimore, ny... not really a midwest city. it's gonna be a lot quicker than you would think the midwest would be. If you go further west, kansas city, for example, it's a bit slower, people tend to be a little nicer (not southern nice, but not ny asshole).
Get used to not having sweet tea... I'm still not used to it...

You'll hear plenty of Big 12 bullshit out here... Mizzou is in Columbia... KU is 45 minutes from the Missouri border, then you got iowa and iowa state... k state is at the other end of kansas... you'll get tired of it. People don't realize that the ACC is the best conference ever. 8/9/2005 9:16:50 PM |

^i agree
is big 12 shit/big 10 shit worse out there, just had big 10 on the brain and had not even considered that i would be in the thick of big 12 country as well
you been to any college football games out there? can you find ACC televised anywhere other than a sports bar with ful satelite coverage? 8/9/2005 9:22:49 PM |
abonorio All American 9344 Posts user info edit post |
Not too much Big 10 here... there might be more of that in St. Louis... But big 12 is every-fucking-where.
I haven't been to any football games (only been out here since late January). I was gonna try to hit a few mizzou or KU basketball games but never got around to it.
I had a hard time trying to watch NC State play basketball in the tourney... with all the local coverage, they would play teams around here before they would play NCSU. I did see the Connecticut game (I don't think that one had any local teams battling it for the CBS spot)... and I got to see our loss to the Badgers... Besides that, I'm subscribing to ESPN game plan and XM satellite radio to make sure I get the NC State football games. 8/9/2005 9:32:52 PM |

I definitely missed the bojangles, but I went to KU games, kept my own stockpile of sweet tea at my apartment, and subscribed to ESPN Gameplan (I think I only missed 1 or 2 games...it shows everything on JP, ABC Regional, any ESPN). And it was definitely 100% Big 12.
