Renaissance or Alembic?

D'Angelico, D'Aquisto? Rickenbacker? Gretsch?

What kind of sound are you looking for? Gretsches and Rickenbackers are pretty one-dimensional IMO, but they're awesome dimensions.

There's a HUGE Rickenbacker dealer in Knightdale, but you have to set up an appointment to try 'em out if I remember correctly because he's technically mail order only due to some sales territory stuff.

I've always liked the 335, but I always feel like with Gibson you're paying a lot for the name.

Epiphone actually makes a pretty good version of the ES 335 called the "Dot". I researched it a while back and they are identical except for the pickups and the Epi comes w/ a plastic nut. I bought one, threw some 57 Classic pickups in and got a bone nut. The thing plays great...and I put less than $600 in it total.

The nicest ES 335 clone ive ever played was an Ibanez. As nice, if not nicer than the gibson
