the fan(s) in my laptop are not working. how much will it cost to get something like this fixed? i have to take it to compusa or somewhere like that, and the only reason i'm gonna do that instead of having a friend of my brother's do it is b/c i need it soon. and no, i don't have any insurance, etc on it.

Who made the laptop? Which model is it?

Really, it all depends on why your fans aren't working. The fix could range from cleaning the fans, to replacing the fans, to replacing the motherboard,

bttt.

my brother knows a little bit about computers, and he said he could tell the fans weren't clogged/needed to be cleaned. But otherwise, idk if it's the motherboard or the fans.

ARRRRRRRRRRR!
emily just got her laptop back (from compusa) today. unfortunately, i don't have all the really helpful info that might help, but...
- her keyboard doesn't work. period.
- she's got an external mouse plugged in, thank god, but her computer doesn't see her built-in touchpad, with or without the external mouse plugged in.

as best i can tell, she started having problems on it over the summer, her brother tried to do a restore, but the computer kept saying the disc image was corrupted. compusa told him they would do a complete restore while they had it, and as far as i can tell, they didn't do a damn thing but get her fan working.
the fan - the intake is on the bottom of the laptop

i've called synaptics (manufacturer of her touchpad), but it's outside of business hours. i'm not sure where to go from here - do i look for drivers for the touchpad, do i go through and clear her system of any spyware and viruses she might have (her brother said when she first gave it to him, it was loaded with spyware), or what? at this point, i can back up the files emily needs, and restore her computer, and it really sounds like it might be the best idea, b/c cleaning the system might not take care of all the problems, and at this point, there's virtually nothing to lose by doing it.

anybody have any other suggestions? i'm gonna go ask her if she has her system restore CDs, and if not, i'll get hold of some.

that is standard. it's the reason you aren't supposed to opperate a laptop on soft/squishy materials like bed covers etc. you are only supposed to lay them on hard surfaces so that air can still get to the intake on the bottom.

sounds to me like backing up what you can and doing a full format/restore would be best if you don't really know what is wrong.

that or take it back to compusa and make them do it since they said they would and it doesn't work when you got it back.

her mom wanted to do that, and emily, her brother, and i are all saying "NO!"
my fan's intake is on the rear. i kinda figured that was standard.

why are you saying no if you can backup the important files?

you'll spend half the time backing up and restoring than trying to fix it. possibly less depending on what is wrong.

NO b/c the compusa folks have fucked up enough times as is

i've got her system restored, and now i'm running adaware, spybot, hijack this, and symantec >.<
there's still something in her computer that's giving very convincing "OMG REGISTRY ERRORS go to [some site] to fix!!"
since i'm keeping her off the network until i get this fixed, i'm ignoring all that...so far, all of the stuff i'm running hasn't found whatever is causing that.
small problem though - maybe you can help, if you were in the training session tuesday
brantley? was up there, showing where in the registry you can go to see what's in the startup folder that might not show up from the start menu folder. i've deselected the "hide system folders" option, but i still can't get to the hkey_local_machine
this is so damn frustrating, but i want her machine clean. and then i'm gonna do my best to emily-proof it

okay, good to know you're giving up on it, christine.

the guy that worked on my computer at compusa is a friend of my brother's, who just happened to be assigned the computer. i talked to him today, and he said the reason the keyboard could not be working is b/c something may be loose, in the computer (possibly from the fan replacement).

he also said that compusa has a 30 day labor warranty, so i'm HOPING that i can take it to the compusa in Raleigh to fix it. it was worked on in Greensboro, but i'm not planning on going home anytime soon, and i don't wanna have to deal with getting it there and getting it back.

it's teh sux0r.

So I took it to CompUSA yesterday, and I'm happier with the Raleigh one than the Greensboro one. My parents handled it in Greensboro, but basically, the guy there seemed like a dip. (My mom's wording.) But the guy in the CompUSA in Raleigh seemed to be a bit more helpful. Anyway, he said, after looking at what it was doing when it started up, that I would need a new hard drive. So it's there now, for diagnosis and fixing. It's good though, that they have that 30 day labor warranty, b/c I was not about to pay another $140 to the Raleigh location to do this. I still have to buy the $125 40 Gig hard drive, but that'll be something I pay for when I go to pick it up... Hopefully it won't take a full week to fix it, but we'll see it.

i WANTED advice before now. and all i got was to let someone not incompetent to deal with it. so i took it to compusa, and it's just an UPDATE.

sorry i didn't directly follow what you said, scrager. i did do the restore crap, but mainly, i was posting on here to see if there was anyone on tww that would be able to help me out, instead of having to take it to compusa.

meaning someone to actually do the shit needed to be done, not just tell me what to do.
