I've never built a system with this and I'm getting ready to upgrade. I've read a few reviews but I wanted to know if anyone ran into problems like the 64 bit processors have.

I'm looking at this because my work station is a dual proc 2.8ghz p4 from Dell and it runs so fast it's disgusting. I'm thinking of doing the same but don't know the effects with games and such and if it's worth it or not.

dual processors isn't going to help you much in games...
maybe if you have dual 7800GTX then you might need dual processors but it's too costly and not worth it like noen said.

Now if you were trying to do dvd ripping, 3ds max rendering, and recording music in pro tools then it would be useful because you assign the different programs to different processors/threads.

But for most home users, it's not very useful unless you just want bragging rights.

the cost diff is significant too, in the boards i've been looking at, sometimes 500 bucks separates single vs dual proc 64 bit boards

So are you saying it's overkill (which i assumed) and there aren't really any problems?

Reason being is that I have access to a motherboard like my work computer and I just have to buy the procs. I've never set one up so didn't know if it was a huge hassle.

How would having another video card make 2 processors worthwhile in gaming?

Your game will execute only on one processor/core.

If you're a developer of any sort though, it does make a big difference.

You're only going to see a real performance advantage from a dual core or dual CPU system if you work with your computer, not if you play.

hell, that changes things entirely. might cut out 1/3 or more of the total cost of this type of a project. still two processors are expensive, especially if you go dual-core.

i don't think that setup would be a problem

I'm not too concerned with cost as I get a lot of hardware cheap because of our deals with vendors. I was more concerned with it being a pointless endevor. I wasn't sure how the second processor was involved with gaming and newer video cards.

Thanks ill prolly just go with a 3ghz p4.

even my older p4 w/HT shows up as two different processors when the bios shit first comes up. i HIGHLY doubt you truely have two seperate processors.

Well I was assuming that he would have the game dedicated to one processor and everything else dedicated to the other. But he would need a very high end video set up like a 7800GTX SLI to be CPU bound on a system like that.

Basically your gaming shouldn't be affected nearly as much by CPUs as the video card. The second processor would only be useful to offload all work except for the game.

We're saying the same thing, but differently I think.

mine says the same, it physically is only one processor though...learn a little more about HT and all the dual core technologies if you don't already know about them (and apparently you don't) and report back, thanks.

Opened it up. Had two processors. And I was under the impression when it said "2 cpus" i means 2 processors. If it meant dual core it's understandable.

alright dip shit, i'll show you a screenshot of BOTH of my dual core (single processor) computers that shows the processors seperately if you really want to see it..its a hell of a lot more common than actually having two processors in a workstation and I have never seen one from Dell.
