In your experience what is the average lifespan of these monitors? I paid $350 extra for my flat panel and it just died. I bought my system in August 2002. I want to get another one but I don't want it to die in 3 years.
I guess you get what you pay for but is this a good monitor to get?

Spend the extra cash for a larer monitor. You'll be glad you did.

As for lifespan, I find that it's dependent on the quality of monitor that you buy. I've seen LCDs die after a year, I've seen some that are still running after 6 years (I haven't come across too many older than this.). While no brand in immune from defective parts and monitors that die early, I've found that "off-brand", lower quality (and generally cheaper) monitors don't last as look as the more expensive "name brand" monitors. You're correct when you say that you get what you pay for.

Although I don't buy Dell, their monitors are supposed to be quality.

my dad bought 2 samsung sens pro 520 laptops when they first came out (1996-ish) and the LCD's STILL work in both. and trust me they've gotten tons of use.

This is the monitor I'm getting. Samsung has the best contrast ratio that I've seen in monitors.

With my discount and the manufacturer mail in rebates I get a really decent price on it

I would be concerned with the uniformness(is that a word) of brightness, viewing angle, and light bleed around the edges wayyyyyyy before contrast ratio.

samsungs rock though
