My girlfriend wants to start riding her own bike and we're trying to get some ideas of what to buy her. I ride a harley but feel that that it's a lot of bike for a first bike. I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of a 500 or 600 and probably something a little sportier and lighter than a cruiser so she can learn to steer and handle the bike.
Any suggestions?

Buell Blast maybe? Thats what the riding class at Ray Price uses and they're easy to find used. Only has one cylinder, not sure about cc's though. 8/22/2005 11:52:53 AM |

Kawasaki EX-500 (Ninja 500).
i've said this about 1000 times, but a 600cc sportbike is NOT a beginner's motorcycle, or anything even close to it. it's a MIDDLEWEIGHT racing machine that happens to be street legal. 8/22/2005 12:33:29 PM |

not interested in like a 250 "cruisier style" bike? something like a GZ250 should be small enough and light enough. cheap too. 8/22/2005 1:32:34 PM |

yeah, Rebel 250, Ninja 250 would be kinda fun for her (esp the little ninja). i'd want something that wouldn't be turning up near redline on the interstate, though. a 500 is still manageable for a beginner, but it has enough power to be a viable form of transportation instead of a toy. 8/22/2005 1:56:34 PM |

Agreed - Honda Hawk (nt650) is another good beginner bike. 8/22/2005 5:04:23 PM |

Hey... I'm a girl looking for a beginner bike, too. Everything these guys have mentioned is dead on... although, personally, I'm apprehensive about starting on a 250... because they say you get tired of it easily... but I suppose that's the point in it being a learner bike. Hopefully I'll graduate into a late 80s Honda Shadow by spring... Gotta dig the cruiser thing 8/23/2005 5:42:02 PM |

i'd say 500cc should be good for a woman. 500 is pretty much good for any decent power with lots of fun for any beginner on a motorcycle. I was riding around with this senior girl on a 500 yellow bike (forgot the maker) and it looks nice. It was her first bike and she said she has been riding for a year or so.
I'd go with duke's ninja 500 req, they are nice bikes. 250's should be good as well, but my thinking is that you'd go 3 months and you may want something better. atleast the 500 gives you room to grow and should keep you happy for a year or more. 8/23/2005 5:59:40 PM |

i have an 83 midnight virago 920 for sale, $1000, good appearance black paint, lots of new chrome, highway bar and pegs, new mirrors, bars and turn signals, new brakes, new battery and voltage regulator, just adjusted the valves, cleaned the carbs, changed the oil in the engine and rear end, lubed the splines and universal joint, new plugs and caps, new seat and sissy bar pad covers, built it for a good daily driver, but i found something else recently i couldnt pass up. I have about $1600 in this bike, so I won't take any less than $1000, which is the blue book value, so don't pm me with offers of like $500. 8/23/2005 9:56:21 PM |
