Why?
Is Google scanning the conversations to make their searches better or something?
Also, if you screenname is also your email, doesn't that open you up to a LOT of spam, like AOL users? 8/23/2005 11:50:17 PM |

No, see, because a google employee hasnt sold a list of 12 million emails to spammers.8/23/2005 11:52:11 PM |

Oh man, that's sexy, it integrates right in as a plugin to the google desktop also. 8/23/2005 11:55:28 PM |

^^ No, I mean if you give your screenname out, or post it on websites, etc., spam bots automatically know your email address. People who hate you can easily mail-bomb you, or attempt to hack your email account. It just seems less "safe" than having a screename isolated from an email. 8/23/2005 11:57:21 PM |

Maybe, but how many of you use the same AIM name as you do, @hotmail, @gmail, or @yahoo?

true.
but it can be used with a lot of other apps that already have familiar GUIs so it's probably going to grow - "it can't hurt to just let it be logged on in the background in case someone wants to IM me on that name" kinda mindset8/24/2005 9:11:07 AM |

running, interface is clean & simple (as expected from google) which i like, not too many options (beta, what do you expect), i'll have to test out the Call feature sometime to see the quality.
i wouldn't expect this to draw people away from AIM unless Google does some very very cool stuff with it. 8/24/2005 3:40:57 PM |

i've used the talk feature from a fast network in chicago -> rtp fast network and a house w/ cable in garner - both conversations were very clear
on the internal network here it's absolutely perfect 8/24/2005 3:43:12 PM |

The blogosphere is rumbling with Google Talk's forthcoming takeover of the IM space.
WTF
Voice isn't even new. Yahoo! messenger has had voice since 2000.
Suddenly, Skype is going out of business. I just don't get it.
Google sure has a lot of search users...but do you think they really have that much user base for the IM application, even if it's open?
Yahoo!'s search engine handles like 40% of all searches on the Internet, and their messenger client is the best thing ever.
seriously...I talk to my parents in India using Yahoo! Messenger, and the voice quality beats a cellphone. 8/24/2005 3:46:01 PM |
OmarBadu zidik 25073 Posts user info edit post |
google will take over yahoo in the IM market like it did in the search market - the talk feature has been in AIM/yahoo and 100s of third party apps for a long time - they were only missing one thing - the golden google name 8/24/2005 3:48:03 PM |
Shaggy All American 17820 Posts user info edit post |
its nice and all, but i dont see it replacing anything.
everyone i talk to is on aim.
All i need out of aim is IM.
I dont need voice, i dont need video, i dont need any other stuff.
And right now theres no reason for me to switch to any other client and there's a huge reason for me (and most of the internet) to stay where they are. Everyone else would have to switch clients.
I'd rather see them use SIP for chat/voip instead anyway. 8/24/2005 3:51:36 PM |

so does MSN messager
and so does MS portrait.
hell, even fucking lotus sametime can do SIP.
im guessing Google choose to use an open standard that their competitors weren't using. 8/24/2005 3:55:51 PM |

Google Talk supports a custom XMPP-based signaling protocol and peer-to-peer communication mechanism. We will fully document this protocol. In the near future, we plan to support SIP signaling. " |

Use http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ then you can connect to AIM, ICQ, Gadu-Gadu, Groupwise, IRC, Jabber (Google Talk), MSN, Napster, SILC, and Yahoo. I use it because most everyone uses AIM but as people move to Jabber (Google Talk), I can just use the same client and not worry about anything! 8/25/2005 3:34:47 PM |
