the fact there is a flashing red LED in a car is often enough to deter a theif

yeah, I saw one at Radio Shack that looked similar to ones I've seen in various cars... with a flasher it would be fairly believable

If you're gonna get one, go all out. Take your time and find a good prie though. Having a 2-way pager system is a big benefit, since you don't have to worry about other people paying attention. The pager goes off if your alarm does. My pager beeps/whistles/vibrates/lights up and I can check the status anytime. It also says which part of the system has been triggered, whether the engine is running or not, immobilizer, turbo timer, etc. And you can turn any of the features on and off whenever you want. My truck was stolen at night too, and I am 100% sure that if it had an alarm, it would have been stopped. Go ahead and get remote start too, I think most 2-way alarms have that anyway. Then most name brand alarms with these features will have a few more channels if you want to add more options (glass breakage sensor, remote window rolldown, etc).

also I'm not sure about this but do insurance companies give breaks for having a security system installed?

ive had insurance companies ask me about ABS, airbags, and alarms on some vehicles, and not on others

so i guess it depends on the vehicle
(they may care more if there is a lein on the vehicle about an alarm)

My car alarm allerted me when a tow company tried to steal my car. I say steal, because I won the court case.
