Hello,
I know there are a lot of computer problems posts in here but I thought one more would be fun. So my computer will randomly stop responding and therefore requires a hard reboot. At first I thought there was a disconnect between my mouse and keyboard (which went through a wireless reciever to one USB port) but I replaced the mouse and keyboard and it happened again. Also this last time it occured it happened right when a webpage was loading and the webpage did not continue to load which it would have if it was a problem with the input devices. It is kind of hard to diagnose since I can't interact with the computer at all when the problem is happening. The only thing that is still messed up after the reboot is I have to restore my active desktop. This is kind of weird though because I just have a picture as a background and I dont have any icons visible on my desktop. Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

So I dont think the problem has to do with overheating because I have one of those cases with 5 fans in it. I have an ASUS mobo and when I look at ASUS probe the temperatures are fine (CPU-35C). MY question is how accurate is this temperature reading? Also the processor I have in there right now I purchased as a OEM processor in the box (AMD). The heatsink had a little heat pad on it already when I went to install the processor. Is this sufficient or do I need to look into applying a new pad/paste? This is kind of tied into the aqccuracy of the ASUS probe measurement, b/c if this measurement is correct then I can assume the heat pad is sufficient. The problem usually occurs when I come back to my PC after leaving it on during school or overnight and I can't get it out of standby; however, a couple of times I have been on internet and it just stopped... even the green load progress bar for the webpage stopped. Please help.

for serious hardware issues such as temp. I don't think just a restart would fix it unless you left it off for several several mins, not just a quick reboot.

Could be heat, could be sketchy memory, could be something else.

I usually diagnose something like this by dropping back to the basics. First of all, download a temperature monitoring program so you can watch your temps(watch the processor temperature). Then pull out the things you don't need(sound, modem, CD, etc) and pull out everything except one stick of memory. If the lockups keep occuring switch the memory and try again.

Just my 2 cents.

hrmm switched out my RAM and it happened again. I dont have another video card to switch out. Anyone have an AGP card I borrow for a bit to test if that is the problem? Any comments on whether formatting and reinstalling my hard drive will work? I was planning on doing it soon to clear out some junk anyways...

I just tried to update my spybot S&D and got an error of !!! bad checksum !, can this and my copmuter screwing up be related?

Also, ^^ would the ASUS probe program that came with the ASUS mobo not be sufficient for the temperature monitoring?
