I keep hearing right-wing pundits say that news outlets don't tell the American people the good things that are happening in Iraq.
If you have a "good news in Iraq" story, please post it here and cite the source.
Thanks. 9/1/2005 10:52:15 PM |

lets see - a murderous dictator was dethroned. The people participated in elections - which is the first step towards civilised rule. Women are less likely to be raped by the Iraq army.......

of course their chances of being raped by an American army increased by infinity (i.e. 0% to __ )

1. Some towns have their first paved roads and schools. 2. Secured the oil pipeline and fields 3. More Iraqis are being trained every day so that the US can pull out possibly as soon as next year. 4. Removed any threat that Sadam represented to the US and to the rest of the World. 5. Stopped some funding to terrorist organizations. 6. Giving every Iraqi province a say in the Iraqi law system, not just the radicals. 7. No more mass murders, rapes, tortures, or any other intentional pain caused by Sadam.
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head.
Remember, for every story that the media has with a citizen complaining, you could also find a citizen applauding. 9/2/2005 11:11:03 AM |

But seriously, I think there's a lot more people being killed on a day to day basis in Iraq since the war's been started. 9/2/2005 12:32:28 PM |

Too late it already is. At least for me. Now that the hurricane is gone I could care less about the "human condition". They saw the hurricane coming. This isn't the Galveston hurricane of 1900 (and even the they had warning but the US Government had their head in the sand).9/2/2005 12:32:36 PM |

Iraq war is unwinnable:
Quote : | "More than a dozen current and former intelligence officers knowledgeable about Iraq spoke with TIME in recent weeks to share details about the conflict, and they voiced their growing frustration with a war that they feel was not properly anticipated by the Bush Administration. The officers believe its a war fought with insufficient resources and a war that almost all of them now believe is not winnable militarily." |
Quote : | "More than a dozen current and former intelligence officers knowledgeable about Iraq spoke with TIME in recent weeks to share details about the conflict. They voiced their growing frustration with a war that they feel was not properly anticipated by the Bush Administration, a war fought with insufficient resources, a war that almost all of them now believe is not winnable militarily. "We're good at fighting armies, but we don't know how to do this," says a recently retired four-star general with Middle East experience. "We don't have enough intelligence analysts working on this problem. The Defense Intelligence Agency [DIA] puts most of its emphasis and its assets on Iran, North Korea and China. The Iraqi insurgency is simply not top priority, and that's a damn shame."
The intelligence officers stressed these points: [...]
The accumulation of blunders has led a Pentagon guerrilla-warfare expert to conclude, "We are repeating every mistake we made in Vietnam."" |
Quote : | "Intelligence experts can't credibly estimate the rebels' numbers but say most are Iraqis. Foreigners account for perhaps 2% of the suspected guerrillas who have been captured or killed, although they represent the vast majority of suicide bombers. ("They are ordnance," a U.S. intelligence official says.) The level of violence has been growing steadily. There have been roughly 80 attacks a day in recent weeks. Suicide bombs killed more than 200 people, mostly in Baghdad, during four days of carnage last week, among the deadliest since Saddam's fall." |
Quote : | "Iraq experts in the intelligence community believe that the proposed constitution, which creates autonomous regions for the Kurds and Shi'ites in the oil-rich north and south, could heighten the chances of an outright civil war. "A lot of us who have followed this thing have come to the conclusion that the Sunnis are the wolves--the real warriors--and the religious Shi'ites are the sheep," says an intelligence officer. "The Sunnis have the power to maintain this violence indefinitely." |

Quote : | " Under fire: British soldiers attacked in Basra Army used tanks and helicopters to storm jail and free captured troops, say Iraqis
British troops were struggling to maintain control in Basra last night after the city exploded into bloody violence following the alleged killing of an Iraqi policeman by a British soldier.
Two British servicemen, dressed in civilian clothes, were held at Basra's main police station after the incident. Outside, rioting began as the city threatened to descend into anarchy.
Last night, British forces used up to 10 tanks - supported by helicopters - to smash through the walls of the jail and free the two British servicemen. John Reid, the Defence Secretary, later confirmed they were back with UK forces." |

Here's some not so good news. Despite what the admin is saying about the insurgency, the casualty rates remain the same:
