Thx for the suggestions E-Dawg

I know Guided by Voices because they were tight with The Strokes (who I'm a fan of, I know hate me), I heard they broke up, I never really listened to them, maybe I'll pick up an album

I got some elliott smith, there's definitley a time and place to listen to his stuff (Read: Drinking alone)

I heard a mountain goats song on wknc the other day, not bad

what elvis costello should I start with? My aim is true?

I got Illinoise by Sufjan and I love it

I also got broken social scene's self titled, good stuff

definitley heard alot about neutral milk hotel, what do they sound like, what album(s) to pick up?

keep the helpful advice coming

You need to get "In an Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel. I guess you could sort of define him as freak-folk, but it really defies classification. It's just great music.

Yeah, "My Aim is True" is great, my favorite is "Armed Forces", and the other album that made up the first three that he put out makes the best of his material, I think.

And spookyjon would tell you to get The Microphones The Glow Pt. 2 and Architecture in Helsinki's In Case We Die, so I'll just save him the typing.

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is one of the best albums of all time. E-Dawg is right. I will recommend to you The Microphones and Architecture in Helsinki. I like The Microphones a whole lot more. Not very many people are in to them, though. They're kind of...I dunno. Inaccessible.

Check out Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's new(ish) self titled album.

I second Ted Leo with a vengeance. I second The Arcade Fire and so will every human with a pulse who has heard them. Stars are indeed very good, as are the related bands Broken Social Scene and Metric.

There's nothing wrong with liking The Strokes. The reason for this is that they rock. And are awesome. But I wish they were all named Stroke. Hi, I'm Julian Stroke.

I would recommend The Magnetic Fields. You will probably not like half of their music, but the other half is pretty awesome.

There's a lifetime of music out there. Listen listen listen.

p.s. The Woods is very good, but I like their previous album, One Beat, a whole lot better.

Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea --- I love this album and many consider it to be one of those "life-changing" type of albums. Other albums you should listen to: Wrens - Meadowlands and Microphones - The Glow Pt. 2

Sufjan Stevens is rolling around to this area this month so check out Seven Swans, Michigan, or Illinoise. His two earlier albums are harder to get into although i really like Wordsworth's Ridge from A Sun Came. His Christmas Albums are pretty good too if you can find them (on the net).

The Wolf Parade album is already out on the net but itll be a good pickup on Sept 27th. I cant wait to see them live.

Xiu Xiu is kinda hit or miss but i like Bog People and Muppet Face of the new album.

My favorite album of the year so far is probably Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy. Ive also enjoyed National - Alligator, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, new Decemberists....

I think they generally fall into that category, one way or another. Certainly Iron and Wine, Death Cab, and Interpol.

I mean, you can use whatever flawed definition you want. 90% of "independent" films you see are put out by the big studios. There's a lot of "indie" bands that are on the major lables. It's not the best way to classify it at all, really, but you can look at those bands and see that there is a group of people that tends to like them.

just because hucklebucks in nc don't know about them doesn't mean they're indie

either

1. get a subscription to Spin

or

2. realize that seeing a band in Spin does not make them indie

PERHAPS THIS THREAD SHOULD HAVE BEEN TITLED "GOOD ROCK THREAD"

now, i'll start being nice if you'll send me the bloc party CD
