SHANGHAI, China - Nearly 600,000 people were evacuated as Typhoon Talim plowed into southern China on Thursday, forcing authorities to shut down schools, highways and airports, officials said.

Who ever said inner-city slum-dwellers were civilized? People that live in third world countries know how to squeeze the most out of the least and help one another rather than relying on the government to give them a handout or bail them out of a bad situation. It's a sad state of affairs.

^What do you do when people don't listen? I think that many people evacuated the whole area affected by Katrina. We should have gone in with guns and forced everyone out. OMF HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONZ!!1 Shut the fuck up.

Exactly...that is what a mandatory evacuation is. The mayor of NO can scream about lack of federal support all he wants. But if he did his job and got everybody out of the city in the first place then the federal support could have gone where it was needed and should have been focused - the areas with little to no ability to handle the emergency themselves. The governor of LA is showing how weak she is, she didn't mobilize the NG before the strike as she should have. She completely broke down when the city flooded - she let her emotion overrun her instead of guiding her. I mean for a great example of leadership you don't have to go far. Rudy 9/11.

This disaster has really proved just how much our government needs to be rebuilt by and for the people . We need to reverse the decline of our society before its too late. We need to reinforce our technological superiority instead of allowing it to evaporate to the east. We need to discourage apathy and make people responsible for their own actions. This is the second thing to kick us in the ass in the past 5 years and I'm still afraid we won't get the wakeup call.

They had the same problems as us:

Quote :
" There are already reports of looting in many of the affected countries - with homes, shops and even dead bodies being targeted.

And in Sri Lanka, some of the disaster victims have allegedly been raped in refugee camps.

One of the most disturbing allegations is that criminal gangs are befriending children orphaned by the tsunami, and selling them to sex traffickers.

The Indonesian government has banned children under the age of 16 from being transferred from the devastated province of Aceh amid fears that trafficking syndicates were moving into the area.
"

AFAIK though the cases of rape reported haven't been confirmed here, so it may not have been the case then either.

Right. I had forgotten all the coverage about the child rapists roaming the refugee camps. Fox News made a big deal about it for several days during the tsunami disaster.

I can safely say that more Indians have been mugged on Avent Ferry road than in India.

Really? I would think that Americans visiting India would have mugged more Indians than have been mugged on Avent Ferry... But you'd know better than I.

Funny how there are procedures that can make a representative democracy efficient during an emergency.

Quote :
"Main Entry: mar·tial law
Pronunciation: 'mär-sh&l-
Function: noun
1 : the law applied in occupied territory by the military authority of the occupying power
2 : the law administered by military forces that is invoked by a government in an emergency when civilian law enforcement agencies are unable to maintain public order and safety —compare MILITARY LAW "

You see, even staunch democrats believe democracy has limitations, one being the inability to act like a dictatorship when it needs to. Therefore, democracies transform like a butterfly into dictatorships whenever it suits them.

Those constitution writers were damn smart!

Voting when a wall of water is bearing down on you would be a stupid idea. In times of extreme emergency and crisis, martial law is necessary.

^ They sure thought so... regretfully, the men with guns didn't feel it prudent to make people leave this time.

"Fall of New Orleans"

Seriously, people are STILL dying even a week after the hurricane

A key component to the calamity in NO is that they are below sea level. Also, I doubt there were "NONE" for looting, etc., in Mumbai. Also, monsoons ARE different than hurricanes.

But, the gov. response time was crappy in NO.

Inches of water in NO after the hurricane? Remember the hurricane passed and was over BEFORE NO flooded.

Really? The ENTIRE city huh. What about all the people that did evacuate? You know, the smart ones.

The Indian government doesn't allow its citizens to have firearms. So I'm pretty sure there were no shooting deaths because the men with guns just automatically get whatever they want.

Meanwhile, in America, many attempted robberies end in the victims shooting back.

Does Mumbai hold water like a bowl? If not, then the water is free to spread out over the entire landscape.

Doesn't matter

It was a coudburst

Water rose suddenly

Some people were asphixiated in their cars

It was so sudden.

Gotta love the Mumbai spirit...

I read that most crimes in NO are because of drug addicts not getting their daily dose...also the fact that the national guard basically stopped anyone from taking aid there after they got there.
