ooh it's worse than that.

And here's a link to the audio of the NPR Marketplace segment containing this incredible quote. It's real. Although some people might I suppose call it a nervous giggle rather than a chuckle.

PS. E&P actually ameliorated the quote from la Bush. What she said on the tape about New Orleans' newly destitute is: "What I'm hearing which is sort of scary is that they want to stay" in Texas.

Luke 19:1-10 He entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, "He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner." Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much." Then Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost."

Shocking, but true for the most part. The ones in the Astrodome will be better off now that they've relocated. And Texans will pay for it until they are dispersed to other states by HUD.

I read it to mean that their living situation in the Superdome was much better than their living conditions pre-hurricane...which is probably true.

Maybe I just fail to read too far into things.

so what context would you say would justify those remarks, then? Does it matter? If someone says that "you know, underprivileged people" (read: poor, black people) should be used to living in dirty and dangerous conditions already, so putting them in another dirty and dangerous condition "works out well for them", does it matter under what circumstances it is said?

Laura Bush called the hurricane, "Hurricane Karina" 3 times today during a speech about getting children back to school.

This family is completely disconnected from the reality of the less fortunate.

Only that your entire perception of the situation is skewed.
Handing out any more answers would only hurt you in the long run.

is there any chance she was talking about political rammifications of the displaced people? There was some CNN article saying something to the effect that the population redistribution could move some local political races in texas slightly to the left, with the greatest effect on Houston. I'll look for the article.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/09/11/katrina.politics.ap/index.html

Quote :
"In Texas, which stands to gain the largest number of evacuees, analysts do not expect much impact on statewide races. But local races -- for everything from school boards to legislative seats and perhaps even congressional districts -- could be affected.
...
The place to watch is Houston, which has taken in the most evacuees, at least temporarily.

Richard Murray, director of the Center for Public Policy at the University of Houston, said Republicans hold every elective office in Harris County, which takes in most of Houston, but did not win by much.

"This could accelerate the tipping of the county, which was expected to happen in the next four to six years," he said.
"
