would you have been satisfied with the response of our Federal Gov't?

this actually brings up an interesting point

the terrorists are probably kicking themselves after realizing how easy it would have been to bomb those levees and create absolute total mayhem

Thank God all the terrorists decided to stay in Iraq in order to terrorize us. We're perfectly safe.

From: Habib bin-Laden <habib@alqaeda.com>
To: Al Qaeda Operative Group
Subject: Memo on Professionalism

This memo is to remind everyone that no more personal chit-chat around the water cooler is allowed. While we try to maintain a personal environment, our cause of killing invader infidels is beginning to suffer.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

In light of the new rules, I have taken the initiative to taint the water cooler with our latest strain of smallpox virus. Long live the Allah! Jihad will sustain our fight against the infidel

our government is so pathetic...they allow tons of terrorist attacks all the time...not doing a good job of preventing them...the govt just fucks around on the internet instead of doing anything proactive

FEMA is now a branch of the Department of Homeland Security, and they performed horribly in the aftermath of Katrina.

First, a bomb would have only taken out a small section of the levy as most of its height is a earthen dam, which would have protected the bottom section of concrete from the blast, which would have returned the favor by saving the earthen part of the dam from the running water until it became saturated, long enough for the heavy machinery to move in. Not to mention, the water is rarely far enough above the Earth levy to be devastating.

This was not the case here because the water was so high, the breach was not reported quickly, there was no electricity to operate the pumps, and the machinery to fix it was not activated. As such, the levy was left to its own devices, until it didn't exist anymore.

Second, with an intact electrical grid the city would have had little trouble keeping up with the rupture at least well enough to keep the streets from flooding so the heavy machinery, which is normally on 24-hour notice, to drive up and fix the breach.

This breach was only devastating because the area was already a disaster.

so basically sounds like the conclusion is that, "If the NO levees had been bombed by terrorists," there would have been a satisfactory response

So the defense of the poor performance of FEMA is that terrorists could not have effectively blown up a levee and flood N.O.?

That's a pretty lame defense.

I was preventing the, 'OMFG LOOK AT THOSE FLOODED BUSES! NAGIN'S A FUCK UP AND SO IS THAT DUMB WHORE OF A GOVERNOR" defense.

If the Department of Home Security's [FEMA's] performance of the handling of the aftermath of Katrina is indicative of their effectiveness, then how can we rely on them in a terrorist's biological or chemical attack?

so, what your pretty much saying here, is that you would expect the fire department to arrive at your house at the same time after it had been destroyed by a hurricane, versus if it had been set on fire????

^^^ You've still not said why that is an unjustifiable response to those pictures of flooded buses.

Not to mention the failure to relocate the heavy equipment and people necessary to even try and fix a collapsing levy.

One engineer I spoke to here at NCState said one common solution was giant plastic tarps which could be placed over top a similar styled of levy (earthen base, concrete center and top) to keep the water from penetrating the earth when it flows over the top of the levy. Of course, they would have needed several miles of the stuff to cover everything, assuming there were no low spots to act as spillways, and it wouldn't have prevented all the flooding because the power was out, but it would have kept the levy intact for whenever the water receeded.

but seriously, pryderi, your "So the defense of the poor performance of FEMA is that terrorists could not have effectively blown up a levee and flood N.O.?" statement is null and void. This is what we call a "strawman" argument.

The only thing better is that you initiated conversation to create a strawman.

Assuming the terrorists HAD that much explosives theyd also...

1) have to avoid being spotted
2) have to sabotage the pumps too
3) have to avoid getting spotted
4) would probably use the explosives on something else.

actually, we did think "Big Picture," and what we came up with was "if the turrists did try and blow up a leevee, it wouldn't do much damage as long as NO responded swiftly and appropriately." Thus, again, your thread is over.

Even Georgie Boy is concerned about the ability of our government's ability to respond to a terrorist attack.

Quote :
"Q Mr. President, given what happened with Katrina, shouldn't Americans be concerned if their government isn't prepared to respond to another disaster or even a terrorist attack?

PRESIDENT BUSH: Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government. And to the extent that the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility. I want to know what went right and what went wrong. I want to know how to better cooperate with state and local government, to be able to answer that very question that you asked: Are we capable of dealing with a severe attack or another severe storm. And that's a very important question. And it's in our national interest that we find out exactly what went on and -- so that we can better respond. "

So those of you who "talked to engineering students" about levees and such, you can now proceed to go fuck yourselves.

^^ actually, thats not a strawman. I set no false argument up. But nice try. I pointed out your hypocrisy and foolishness. I pointed out that no matter WHAT dubya did, you'd still attack him for it. Thus, your complaint is irrelevent, because dubya doing the opposite of your complaint (the logical course of action) would still yield you complaining...

1. Who was it that stepped up first after 9/11? It was mainly the local government, Rudy Guliani and the NYFD. In NO, this did not happen.

2. A hurricane is way different than a terrorist attack in a sense that a hurricane lasts for hours. This leads to trouble detecting holes to begin with, because if there is a hole, no one could do anything about it until the storm had left.

3. Why would the terrorists do that when all they would kill is poor, black people? They must be racists!
