one of my co-workers has a 1997 F150 and the check engine light came on. she took it to autozone so they could check the code (she didn't tell me what it was), bought a new part and took it to a local mechanic to replace the part. now check this...the mechanic told her that she needs to drive it aroound for a while before the check engine light will go off. now coorect me if i'm wrong but can't the mechanic just reset the light? can autozone reset the light? also can she use the good ol' disconnect the battery method to reset the light? she's doesn't want to drive it around too much b/c she's behind on her inspection but she can't get an inspection until the CE light goes off. any suggestions?

i'm not sure what the part was that she had replaced. she didn't know b/c her husband bought the part. so will the CE light go off after she drives around for a bit or was that just a load of shit that her mechanic fed her?

I have a 97 F-150 and my check engine light comes and goes by itself. Any of the methods you said will work, I dont recomend taking it to a Ford dealership, they charged me $75 dollars to turn that damn light off

unplug the battery and let it sit a while. that would be the easier thing to do, like while she is at work or something

If the problem is fixed, the light will go out on its own in a certain number of drive cycles.

jsut to to Advance or autozone. theyll clear it for free and she'll then soon know if it is fixed or not. 22cyles is a lot if a Ford cycle is like a VW cycle where it has to be cold, warm up, go 60mph, then go slow, then go fast, turn off, cool down, repeat or some rediculousness
