Quote : | "Celebrity anti-war protester, fresh off inking a lucrative deal with Speaker's Bureau, has demanded at the HUFFINGTON POST and MICHAEL MOORE'S website that the United States military must immediately leave 'occupied' New Orleans.
"I don't care if a human being is black, brown, white, yellow or pink. I donÕt care if a human being is Christian, Muslim, Jew, Buddhist, or pagan. I don't care what flag a person salutes: if a human being is hungry, then it is up to another human being to feed him/her. George Bush needs to stop talking, admit the mistakes of his all around failed administration, pull our troops out of occupied New Orleans and Iraq, and excuse his self from power. The only way America will become more secure is if we have a new administration that cares about Americans even if they donÕt fall into the top two percent of the wealthiest."" |

As I said earlier, centering on one person is a very unsustainable way to run a protest... if all of a sudden sheehan becomes uncredible (which i think she kinda already has), then the whole anti-war movement looks stupid, because they allowed her to be their icon.

These are your people, DG. Your comrades-in-arms fighting the oppression of The Man.
You'd have to be naive to think principled opposition wouldn't turn into rank political opportunism.

that's exactly what I don't like about it. I've said from the beginning that I wasn't sure about sheehan and what her actual motivation was, and it didn't matter anyway, because I didn't like putting the fate of the movement on one woman.
That's exactly what I feel the right has done with GW. They've rested everything on his shoulders, and if he went down, they'd go with him.
and also, it's silly to even suggest that they're "Fighting the man." they are "the man," they're just the other half of it.
Anyway, i'm not surprised, just disappointed.

The difference is GW is President, if he goes down the GOP goes down regardless if they rest everything on his shoulders or not

she was never that great for the cause anyway, other than by raising awareness by briefly having a national spotlight shining brightly on the protest movement. she's always made some pretty specious arguments, and has presented herself in a way that's always been pretty easy for the conservatives to pick apart and make most moderates dismiss her out of hand as a loony. 9/18/2005 12:50:52 PM |

I mean, by nature of her position she would have to be a one-issue woman. If she wanted to retain any credibility, she should have stopped giving statements on other issues because it just dilutes the real issue that she claims to be fighting for. 9/18/2005 2:05:22 PM |

i'm with DG here. i approve of her cause; i just want a different spokesperson/leader. i don't think she's really all about the cause anymore. instead, it's just publicity. well, the right gets pat robertson, so maybe it's not so bad. but yeah, let's get somebody different to lead this cause.
Quote : | "I know there are some Christians who believe that war and their participation in it are morally wrong. While I respect their views and must allow them to follow their consciences, I do not believe the Bible teaches pacifism" |

We haven't made the world a safer place yet. That will not be known for probably at least ten to twenty years.
We have made the world temporarily more unstable with the hope of bettering the future by establishing a democracy (by the way, thats not why we went to Iraq in the first place, its like the story of how the great product "liquid paper" was discovered, except people died in this version).
I disagreed with the war in the first place but I am hopeful that Iraq does become a fruitful democracy. 9/21/2005 11:23:45 AM |

Quote : | "FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- After spending scorching August days with hundreds of war protesters at her makeshift camp near President Bush's Crawford ranch, Cindy Sheehan slipped away each night to her tent or RV for a few quiet moments on her laptop.
The words came easily as she opined about the war, U.S. leaders, her critics, her supporters. And the tears started to flow no matter how many times she wrote about her 24-year-old soldier son Casey, who died in Iraq last year.
"I miss him more every day. It seems the void in my life grows as time goes on, and I realize I am never going to see him again or hear his voice," Sheehan wrote. "I knew he was going to be a great man. I just had no idea how great he was going to be or how much it was going to hurt me."
Now those journal entries are in her book, "Not One More Mother's Child," to be released Wednesday. The paperback also contains some of her speeches to peace groups earlier this year, letters to politicians and writings since leaving Crawford." |

I guess that by your logic, that Sun Hudson was killed by a tyrannical governor
[quote]Take a Look in the Mirror The pols confused law with theology and allowed tabloidism to trump privacy.
By Jonathan Alter Newsweek April 4 issue - When he was governor of Texas, George W. Bush presided over 152 executions, more than took place in the rest of the country combined. In at least a few of these cases, reasonable doubts about the guilt of the condemned were raised. But Bush cut his personal review time for each case from a half hour to a mere 15 minutes (most other governors spend many hours reviewing each capital case to assure themselves that there's no doubt of guilt). His explanation was that he trusted the courts to sort through the life-and-death complexities. That's right: the courts.
I bring up that story because it's just one of several ironies that have arisen in connection with the Terri Schiavo saga, in which the president said that the government "ought to err on the side of life." Fine, but whose life? The inmate who might not be guilty? The poor people across the country denied organ transplants (and thus life) because Medicaid—increasingly under the Bush budget knife—won't cover them? The poor people across the world starving to death because we won't go along with Tony Blair when it comes to addressing global poverty?
Sun, a 6-month-old baby with a fatal form of dwarfism, was allowed to die in a Texas hospital over his mother Wanda's objections. Under a 1999 law signed by Bush, who was then governor, cost-conscious hospitals are empowered to decide when care is "futile." The Hudson case is the first time ever that a court has allowed bean counters to override the wishes of parents. "They gave up in six months," Wanda Hudson told the Houston Chronicle. "They made a terrible mistake." Wanda apparently was not "cable ready," as they say in the television world, and she failed to get Randall Terry and the radical anti-abortionists on her side. Tom DeLay never called.
Could there be—perish the thought—politics at work here? Knowing that they cannot deliver on a gay-rights amendment or abortion ban, Karl Rove & Co. settled on bonding to the base with the Schiavo case. The beauty part, as Ross Perot used to say, was that they could be cynical and sincere at the same time, even if it meant twisting themselves into ideological pretzels. The same conservatives who have spent the last generation attacking "judicial activism" and federal intrusion in state jurisdictions were suddenly advocating what they had so long abhorred.
