haha shit just last week i was giving a presentation and made a claim about the direction of a magnetic field in a certain salient shunt winding in a synchronous machine. one of the audience members asked me again what the direction was, and i kept telling him the wrong answer. finally after moving along it hit me that I was wrong and was able to correct myself.

Regenerative braking has been used in the industrial environment for years. Imagine a giant several megaWatt-rated motor. It takes an enormous amount of energy to get this motor to stop; instead of using friction brakes (like in a regular car) which generates a lot of heat and wastes energy, the properties of an electric machine allow this mechanical energy to be converted back into electrical.

A lot of companies, when wanting to stop a motor, will kill the load on the shaft and then connect the electrical terminals of the stator to the utility mains. Not only does the loading of the mains cause a back-EMF (aka reverse torque) to stop the motor, but the company is actually producing electricity and can send it back out to other people on the grid.

In most applications, brushless DC machines are used which require advanced PWM or DQ-winding control techniques which basically use high-powered transistors called thyristors (or Silicon Controlled Rectifiers, depending on the manufacturer) to condition the incoming power source (usually 60Hz AC) to drive the motors. In this case when they want to use regenerative braking the control system has to basically change it's switching pattern to reverse the flow of power from the mechanical side to the electrical. Also as the motor slows the switching has to change to produce a 60Hz signal.

I don't know much about hybrid cars but I think that they use simple DC machines because they can provide constant torque at any speed up to a certain point. In this case, the regenerative braking mechanism is much simpler to implement than in big industrial applications.

edit: if you want to know how it really works, check out the Bailey/Cikanek paper from the IEEE American Control Conference from 2003 (or it may be 2002, I can't remember)
