Hello everyone this is the situation:

I have a dynDNS account with the IP updater thing. I have road runner. I have a web server that works inside my home network but I cannot access my page from the outside. I forwarded port(80) traffic on the router to my PC (192.168.0.4). I have a windows xp home pc with all firewalls DISABLED.

What is the problem?

My ISP is Road Runner
My anti-virus is Norton which is the same as the firewall but I disabled the norton firewall...
My netgear router is MR-814

never dealt with that router but setting 192.168.0.4 as the dmz host (if applicable to this router) couldn't hurt

did you try using the real outside ip address rather than DYNDNS?

I have Norton Internet Security package, 2005 version. Its bundled with a firewall, anti virus and anti spam....

Yes I have tried using the IP address of the router. The weird thing is that I can access the admin page of the router from any computer on the internet and I can make changes and everything so I know that I can connect to the router. I have already tried the DMZ thing.... that didnt help!

I cant believe this simple task is so complicated...

How are you trying to connect to the website?

Open a normal browser and type in your IP (go to http://www.whatsmyip.org and use that ip). What's the error if any?

If it's not finding the site at all that's one thing. If it's giving you a 404 or somethign else that'll help us out immensely.

I assume you are using IIS as the webserver right? Make sure it's set to accept outside network requests. I have been told XP Home has stupid setting issues like that. I don't have any experience myself.

OK. now we know whats going on. disable the norton's internet security. then go into NAV and make sure internet worm protection is turned OFF. then give it a shot and see what happens

By the way I have disabled all anti virus and firewall devices.... For some reason it still wont work...

If you are lost on that webserver client just try apache2triad

Its a all in one for dummies web/SQL/PHP/Mail/Perl/Webmail program.

It has a easy frontend management. Not my idea of clean but it is easy.

and try and make that IP a DMZ to test

I registered http://www.Raige.net with Dyndns but use http://www.zoneedit.com/ for the DNS. Never once had an issue with them and it's free.

Try this. Hook your computer directly up to the time warner box (ethernet directly do it) and see if it's still giving you that same error if it is, it's something with the DNS, if you see it it's your router/settings.

If it STILL doesn't work it can be the following

1) Make sure your webserver is started. Just because it's installed doesn't mean it's running.
2) I don't know if XP Home has IIS services. Make sure that ISNT started as it might take presidence over another webserver and cause those issues
3) Go to http://www.whatsmyip.org and make sure that's the same IP that dyndns has your website pointed at. Also updating of the DNS may take a while so just use your direct IP to check to see if your website is running correctly.

Now lets assume that when you directly connected it, your web server started working!

1) go start, run and type in "cmd". Then type ipconfig and make sure the internal IP you see there is the one port 80 is fowarded to on your router.
2) Make sure your XP machine that hosts the webserver does not have the firewall on again. I know you said they are disabled but check to see if you can turn them OFF.
3) Some routers required you check "allow web traffic for server" on them even though you fowarded port 80 traffic to you. Some also require that the server must be on a trusted list. US Robotics and Linksys do not.

Yeah, I can see it also. I'm assuming you got this fixed but just in case it was by mistake you have to do the following. Make a setting in your router to forward port 80 to the internal addres (192.168.0.4) and go to DynDNS.org and point the DNS name towards the IP address provided from your ISP.

DynDNS should point to your actual RoadRunner IP and then your router will have to point to the computer that is the web server(192.168.0.4)

Thanks to everyone! I appreciate it! I guess I cannot see my own website from inside the network but obviously you all are seeing it.

I'm not sure what I did but im going to have to have faith that it is working since I cannot see it myself.

Norton AV was still running at the time that "A Tanzarian" viewed my page. Norton Firewall is OFF and i saw that ISS is running in SERVICES of windows....

yea you will have to access it from your local address.

you can check that it's world viewable by going through a proxy server, or by setting up static routing in your router.
