odd title, but there's plenty of good bands that get written off as 80s junk (ala kajagoogoo or whatever they were called) even though they were great bands

simple minds is the best example of this

any others?

good examples, but i was thinking more along the lines of bands that people think of from the 80s and can only think of their pop hits.

"Dont You Forget About Me" was Simple Mind's worst song.

Eddy Grant is another one. He was a great reggae artist before "Electric Avenue" hit.

I'm not sure if I'd classify The Stone Roses in the 80's. Their first album came out in 89 but I dont think they had an extensive collection before then. Then again, they basically only had one album and it came out in 89 and their belated second album came out so much later so they're an anomally. The Cure's first album came out in 79 but I wouldnt consider them an 70's band.

I'd put my hat in for The Cure, Joy Division, New Order and The Smiths. The Smiths isnt underrated though.

Yes and no. Their song "Tainted Love" is way overrated, and to this day overplayed. Not a lot of people know, however, that the song is a remake, and that Soft Cell had a handful of good original songs, but were stuck with a one hit wonder tag of a song that wasn't theirs originally.

I think thats only b/c of Morrissey. I don't know, there a hard one to place. I was listening to some of their first album the other night and I'd say I enjoy it more than Joy Division, its actually better as club music, imho.

The Cure is very rated, I think their well-respected now.

Depeche Mode gets plenty of respect, but not necissarily as the pioneers they were. Them and Soft Cell.

Depeche Mode, one of the few New Wave bands that wasn't a one hit wonder (and just released a decent new album last month). It irritates me that when I listen to '80s format stations, the only songs you ever hear are "Just Can't Get Enough" and "People are People". The latter is okay, but the former absolutely sucks compared to other music they put out, it's that cheesy bubblegum pop. Give me "Strangelove" any day.

^^^^ Agree they don't get much respect as the forerunner of alternative. Everyone just thinks all they foreran was goth.

I also like Peter Gabriel, although his respect comes in different forms. When VH1 did the Best and Worst Music Videos of All-Time, they gave him the 4th best of all-time, but also two of the Top Ten Worst.

Siouxse and the Banshees dont get enough respect, not just as a new wave act, or an "alternative" act, but as a group that made good dance music in the early 90s as well.

I'm talking stuff like "Kiss Them For Me", as well as "Cities in Dust" (which fits into the middle category up there)
